Just playing along

Post by wurger54 »

I'm sure I'm just one of many who is plowing through this beast with a PBEM opponenet and enjoying the heck out of it without too much comment [:D]

Appreciate the discussions here, especially some of the winter '41 discussions (which I seemed to have truely taken a historical beating as the Germans). [:(]

In our game we've made it to clear weather of '42 and the Germans are getting frisky again. [8D]

GREAT GAME! [:)]

Ahh the "silent majority". I wish more would check in with their positive experience rather than quietly enjoy their games.[:)]

Good to hear. Maybe let us know if the Germans have any success?

Indeed, this is a fun game that has taken up 3 months of my life so far (and I expect many more months).  The "envelope game" as my girlfriend calls it has already seen some changes, but so far I have not been outraged like some others because I really don't fully get it yet.  As my dad used to say, "some people will criticize an ice cream cone when eating it on a summer day."

I am having a hell of a good time playing.

First person shooter mentality is prevalent, instant gratification with no time paid towards actually having to learn. I refer to those games as "mental masturbation". People don't want to read the manual. Then apply what they have learned through experimentation to see how it really goes together. It is a big manual and you can go bleary eyed digging through it. I know I've missed things cross referencing different sections. People in this generation want to open the box and win right away without paying their "dues". This game is more in the vein of chess than what is prevalent in the stores today.

I totally agree. The best thing I like about this is that you have to think before you move. Just like in the real world if you make a mistake, whether playing a human or the AI your troops will pay for it.

I've been reading Glantz's latest book about Barbarossa and it's like reading an AAR on the game. Everything that happens in real life happens in the game.

As German you have to think about every unit you move. Pushing units around willy nilly, although fun will lead to disaster. Every Movement point is precious. One or two hexes can be the difference between closing the noose on 20+ divisions or seeing them all escape. Great game.

Alas, I fear I have rushed through too many turns in my first game. [:-] This against a most unforgiving Soviet. [:(]
