Sian continued to undergo a bombardment of it's defenses and casualties were moderate today.
The SS Snook continued her struggle to get home, but her flooding is making this look doubtful. She is passing Pagan and has a long way to get to Midway. The Chief of the Boat and a mechanics mate are working furiously to get the sub's pumps back online. The Chief mutters that the secret is to keep them working as a loud clang echoes through the boat. He has hit the pump with his wrench and the pump surges to life. “ Keep working you mother,” he grunts as he stands up and stretches his weary muscles.
The SS Snapper has just passed Georgetown and though her damage is bad she's starting to look like she'll be able to limp into a friendly port.
The troops that will be Operation Revenge are boarding ships at or are leaving Pearl Harbor, bound for the Midway staging area.
VMF-222's transport ship will dock this afternoon and the men of the squadron can't wait to get ashore. “Bob I believe that the first round is on you,” says another one of the pilots. Stick doesn't care about anything other than getting in his first flight with the Corsair.
Phil's convoy slipped out of Noumea in the predawn hours and now will make the long journey to points east. They'll pick up some ships along the way and it'll be a long and slow journey with the ungainly AKs and TKs riding high with their empty holds.
One more day and Pete expects to finally reach Cairns. Getting to Townsville wasn't to bad, but this leg of the journey has been painfully slow. He wonders what it'll be like getting to Cooktown. A young Australian soldier spends all of his waking hours either staring out of the train car's window or at Pete.

Kweiyang received it's usual attention from Japanese aircraft and damage was extremely light as were the casualties.
Chungking was swept by 14 X Jack, 29 X Tojo, 11 X Tony and a snooping Dinah which was damaged. There was no Chinese opposition so the Japanese planes retired after a while.
Rangoon was raided by 48 X Liberator VI and 40 X B-24D. The Japanese managed to put up 3 X Rufe, 9 X Zero and 43 X Tony. The aerial combat was fierce and the Japanese suffered a Rufe downed (1 damaged), 2 X Zero destroyed (4 damaged), 8 X Tony shot down (26 damaged) and 3 X Zero and 2 X Tina were destroyed on the ground. The damage to the base was light as were Japanese casualties but the Allied planes suffered mightily with 27 X Liberator VI destroyed and 6 X B-24D downed (17 damaged).
At Mandalay 24 X Blenheim, 50 B-25J and 34 X P-38G attacked unopposed and the damage to the base and resource center was moderate with 2 X Zero destroyed on the ground. Japanese ground troops were thought to have taken very light casualties. All of the planes retired safely.
18 X B-25J and 3 X PB4Y attacked Maloelap and though they were unopposed the damage to the airbase was light. Ground fire was very heavy and 10 X B-25J were damaged as was a PB4Y.
The IJA artillery continued it's shelling of the Chinese positions at Sian inflicting light loses.
The SS Tarpon has refueled at Cairns and will attempt (the bug) to mine Deboyne Island and then head to Auckland for a refit and upgrade.
Phil is upset with his orders, but there's nothing he can do about them. His convoy will pick up stray ships along the way at various bases as they head back to Pearl Harbor. The only accommodation they got from HQs at Noumea was that if a ship can't make the minimum convoy speed they will not to loiter for it. He looks forward to returning to Pearl because there will be R&R waiting for them.
Pete thought that he'd be in Cooktown already, but he's been sitting for a couple hours waiting for the train to resume it's travels. They were told that there are mechanical problems with the engine and either mechanics or another engine will arrive soon. Pete laughs to himself as he thinks that they should send mechanics with another engine. Sometimes people in high places display very little common sense.
Red wearily walks along with Lucky as another day draws to a close. He dejectedly turns and they head back to the harbor. What he didn't see was that no sooner had he changed direction a certain young lady came out of a store.

Chungking was visited by a large gaggle of Japanese fighters that milled around waiting for opposition that never appeared. The Chinese have decided that until they get better fighters they won't offer resistance to the Japanese in futile efforts that result in decimated squadrons.
Mandalay was visited by 22 X Blenheim 1V and 34 X P-38G who encountered only ground fire. When they had departed a single bomber had been damaged and they had done light damage to the base, destroyed a Jack and a Zero on the ground and it was suspected that ground troops sustained very light casualties.
Myitkyina was raided by 48 X B-25J and they were unopposed. Damage to the base was moderate, casualties light and no planes were damaged.
Port Moresby was attacked by 47 X B-17E and 62 X B-24D while the Japanese amassed a CAP of 16 X Zero, 4 X Jack and 41 X Tony. The big bombers bored in on their target while the Japanese fighters swarmed over them trying to defend their base. The Allies lost 5 X B-17E (26 damaged) and 22 X B-24D (18 damaged) while doing moderately heavy damage to the base, inflicting light casualties on the ground troops and destroying 7 X Zero (4 damaged), 2 X Jack and 9 X Tony (23 damaged). Though these kind of losses are not sustainable it is believed by the Allied command that in this war of attrition the Japanese are suffering heavily.
The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing near Lashio, was attacked again by 25 X B-25J who despite no opposition only managed to inflict light losses on the Japanese. All of the planes departed safely.
The 13th Division at Kungchang was attacked by 8 X SB-2c and casualties were extremely light while all of the planes left without damage.
At Sian the IJA artillery continued to be active and the Chinese forces sustained light casualties.
Stalin asks if there are any indications as to what the Japanese have that can interfere with the US deployment scheduled to happen later this year. The answer is that nobody knows.
The General Staff has recommended that Operation King be pushed back to mid July as putting the pieces in the right places will be more time consuming than they originally thought. Though the shipyards are producing more vessels of all types than anyone ever thought possible the sheer scope of the operation and other demands elsewhere continue to place a strain on the USN. Operation Sunshine is a planner's nightmare as the Navy refuses to spare any of the fleet other than some old 4 pipers and the usual PGs and PCs.
The list of officers up for promotion has made it's rounds and some of the names were pushed down while others advanced. With new ships arriving all of the time there's a constant demand for men to man them.
Gunny stops by for a little chat and Slim offers him a beer. The two men sit in the sand and talk about things in the past and what looms ahead. Gunny says that though he's not certain the 2nd Marines are slated to be part of a big operation sometime in the middle of the year. Slim says that he's in no hurry to be shot at again and later would be fine with him.
“We might as well just walk since the railroad doesn't seem to know how to get us to our destination,” says a disgruntled passenger sitting near Pete. It's obvious that the mechanics are having a tough time trying to jury rig a repair to get the engine running. It's almost comical since the engine sent to bring the train in broke down also. The problem is that there is a lack of maintenance as total effort is going into the war and other things are being neglected. Pete doesn't care if it takes him forever to get to Cooktown and he joins some soldiers in a card game. Just like old times, he thinks.

Port Moresby was subjected to an unauthorized raid by 8 X B-24D (did I forget to order a stand down for this squadron?) and they were jumped by 7 X Zero, 3 X Jack and 19 X Tony of which the .50 cals damaged a Tony while the airbase was lightly damaged. 3 bombers were downed and 2 other got shot up. Allied commanders have taken note that the CAP was much weaker the day after a major raid. The problem is that the bombers and the crews need a rest after such a long mission and Cooktown can only support a given number of planes.
The Chinese bombed their favorite target, the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF which sustained moderate casualties. All 19 bombers departed unscathed.
Koepang was awakened to 12 X B-24D and 28 X P-38G who managed to do no damage to the base. The 12 X Tony (1 destroyed and 2 damaged) managed to damaged 7 bombers and a fighter.
Sian got it's daily dose of artillery shells and their casualties were moderate. The difference today was that the Chinese gunners responded and the Japanese suffered heavy loses.
VMF-222 will make ready to board a freighter and then sail for Midway, later to be assigned to Wake Island, assuming it will be taken in Operation Revenge. The men are happy to be going where the action is, but apprehensive, and they're sad at the thought of not having had time for the joys of Honolulu. Stick is unhappy because he still has no time in a Corsair.
The SS Snapper has managed to get into open ocean and now a betting man would say that the odds are in their favor to make a port for repairs.
The situation aboard the Snook is hopeless and the skipper has decided to try to get as close to Wake Island as possible before the sub sinks. The men are preparing to load as much food and water onto inflatable rafts as possible. Nobody has any illusions about survival and nobody knows what's worse, the sharks or the Japs. They have radioed an SOS and are giving periodic updates as to their position. The SS Hake is the closest vessel and it's heading their way as she was returning to Midway from a patrol. Hake is far enough away that the crew of the Snook will have to go into the water though.
The 2nd Marine Division has been given priority on obtaining everything they need to reach full strength. This can only mean one thing, combat in the near future. Slim has decided to start a pool as to where they'll attack next. He sits looking at a map trying to figure out where they're going, but can't decide. There are so many possibilities, tomorrow he'll pick a place.
Another uneventful day as Phil's convoy sails eastwards. He sits in his cabin writing reports. He hates to admit it, but they are bound to lose some of his best men when they reach Pearl Harbor.
Pete has a pocket full of money, but he'd give it all for some food and water. The train is still not moving and supposedly supplies are being sent along with another engine.

The SS Snapper has managed to get into open ocean and now a betting man would say that the odds are in their favor to make a port for repairs.
The situation aboard the Snook is hopeless and the skipper has decided to try to get as close to Wake Island as possible before the sub sinks. The men are preparing to load as much food and water onto inflatable rafts as possible. Nobody has any illusions about survival and nobody knows what's worse, the sharks or the Japs. They have radioed an SOS and are giving periodic updates as to their position. The SS Hake is the closest vessel and it's heading their way as she was returning to Midway from a patrol. Hake is far enough away that the crew of the Snook will have to go into the water though.
The 2nd Marine Division has been given priority on obtaining everything they need to reach full strength. This can only mean one thing, combat in the near future. Slim has decided to start a pool as to where they'll attack next. He sits looking at a map trying to figure out where they're going, but can't decide. There are so many possibilities, tomorrow he'll pick a place.
Another uneventful day as Phil's convoy sails eastwards. He sits in his cabin writing reports. He hates to admit it, but they are bound to lose some of his best men when they reach Pearl Harbor.
Pete has a pocket full of money, but he'd give it all for some food and water. The train is still not moving and supposedly supplies are being sent along with another engine.

Pete looks around Cooktown and he can't believe at how busy the place is compared to the last time he saw it. Sadly he's not here for sightseeing and he thanks the driver that picked him up at the train station for the little detour around the town. He gets out of the vehicle and walks into an ordinary looking building. Once inside a man greets him and politely asks what his business is here. Once Pete tells him the man asks to see his ID. He is then directed to an office on the second floor of the building. When he gets there a woman asks him politely to be seated and she'll call him in a little while. Half an hour later Pete is ushered into an office and the man behind the desk rises to greet him and offers his hand. Pete shakes it and sits down. A couple of hours later Pete knows little more than before other than he'll be spending lots of time in the air. The same driver who picked him up earlier is waiting to take him to where he'll be staying for the indefinite future.
Bill's convoy proceeds as planned with no interference from the Japanese. The crew of the O'Bannon is kept sharp by drills. Right now boredom is the enemy and Bill's greatest concern is that the men will be lulled into a stupor and miss something if the Japanese do appear. Frank assures him that this won't happen and tells Bill to get some rest.
The British have decided that a plan is needed to break the deadlock with the Japanese in the CBI. Exactly what it is will be decided after the RN, RAF and Army finally agree. Anvil was a wasted effort, though it did demonstrate the IJA's flexibility in the area to a threat.
The Soviets are at the brink with the Japanese, though they don't want a 2 front war at the moment. The Great Patriotic War is taking a monumental effort as the Germans, though reeling from the defeat at Stalingrad, aren't beaten yet.

The SS Trout attacked an AP 41 miles NE of Truk and put a torpedo into her. The AP was observed to be burning and the escorts frantically tried, but failed to find their tormentor.
Wyndham was swept by 28 X P-38G and met 6 X Zero, 11 X Oscar, 10 X Tojo and 23 X Tony. 2 x Oscar, 3 X Tojo and 3 X Tony were splashed while the P-38Gs lost 8 with another 2 damaged. A PBY suffered some damage and returned to base.
Sian was bombarded again and just like yesterday the Japanese gunners missed the mark.
Lanchow was assaulted by the Japanese and they suffered very heavy casualties while the Chinese defenders sustained light loses. The defensive perimeter held intact, but the city is cut off and the Chinese don't seem to be inclined to relieve it.
4 Subs are converging on the crippled Snook to take off the crew, but Snook's skipper is stubbornly insisting that they still just might save their boat.
Operation Revenge slowly is reaching it's being ready and then the US hopes to unleash a series of attacks in the Central Pacific that will shake the Japanese defensive shell.
The USA 41st Division and other units are boarding ships in San Francisco for their long journey to Australia. It is believed that this unit can be the piece of the puzzle that's missing along with a few more Australian combat formations.
Dave has just finished tuning up a car and the man offers some rationing coupons as payment. When Dave sees that there are some for coffee he gladly accepts. It's starting to be normal for people to swap or pay for things with these coupons instead of using cash. Money has limited use when there's little to buy with it. Sandy sits on the porch with a cup of hot tea just lost in her thoughts.
Ed leaves another meeting and wonders when his old gals will be unleashed on the Japanese. The war is being prosecuted at an agonizingly slow pace. If he were a betting man the money would be on the US delaying things as more troops, new ships and planes come on line.
Their convoy is making good progress and all is peaceful. Phil dreams of Hawaiian beaches.
Pete has met with other men that he's supposed to be working with. They seem like a good enough group of guys, but he'll know for sure when the chips are down. In the meantime some of those men wonder what a one armed man is doing being assigned to them. When one of them openly questions this to higher authorities the answer shocks him. He returns to the group and fills them in on what he was told about Pete. Nobody doubts him any longer and all are willing to work with him.

Kweiyang was attacked by 13 X Helen (2 damaged) and 3 X Dinah (1 damaged) which did light damage to the base and negligible casualties to the troops stationed there. It has been noted that this small raid was unescorted and the situation will be monitored by the Chinese for a possible ambush.
Near Koepang an IJN convoy was detected and attacked by 22 X B-17E and 8 X B-24D, which ran into 16 X Tony on CAP. 2 X Tony were damaged and 5 X B-17E were shot up while a B-24D went down. It was reported that an AP was hit by a couple of bombs which set her ablaze and did heavy damage an MSE was also struck and burning with heavy damage.
The SS Balao attacked a heavily escorted TK and hit it with a fish causing fires about 31 miles NE of Takao. The Balao silently slipped away undetected.
Sian was subjected to another artillery bombardment and Chinese loses were light.
At Lanchow an IJA bombardment caused extremely light casualties, but the growing Japanese force is expected to take the city sooner rather than later.
The Nationalist Chinese made another appeal to Washington for more artillery and better planes. They were given the same answer as usual, when it comes available they will get it. In the meantime the Japanese look set on knocking China out of the war. If this happens the Allies will face a daunting problem of Japanese manpower increases facing them. FDR has prodded Moscow to become active against the Japanese, but the response is still the same cry for a second front in Europe.
Midway is bursting at the seams in preparation for Operation Revenge.
Slim still hasn't had a minute of time in a Corsair, but he's chomping at the bit as the time draws near and the scuttle butt has them being thrown directly into battle.
Sylvia caught one of the maids taking something out of one of the guest rooms. She was relieved when she saw what it was as she feared the worst. Knowing that there are Allied agents staying at the hotel makes her keenly aware of the added responsibility she has concerning security with the help.
“So for now Catalinas are the plane of choice, but soon enough we expect to have a newer type to use. Supply runs to coast watchers are going to be a primary mission, though other things will be done too. Any problems with this Pete?” Pete just shakes his head and stares at the map.
Operation Sunshine's initial phase, it's most important, will proceed without air or naval protection. If the Japanese are vigilant and prepared it could be a disaster, but Washington is willing to roll the dice.

Kweiyang was attacked by 13 X Helen (2 damaged) and 3 X Dinah (1 damaged) which did light damage to the base and negligible casualties to the troops stationed there. It has been noted that this small raid was unescorted and the situation will be monitored by the Chinese for a possible ambush.
Near Koepang an IJN convoy was detected and attacked by 22 X B-17E and 8 X B-24D, which ran into 16 X Tony on CAP. 2 X Tony were damaged and 5 X B-17E were shot up while a B-24D went down. It was reported that an AP was hit by a couple of bombs which set her ablaze and did heavy damage an MSE was also struck and burning with heavy damage.
The SS Balao attacked a heavily escorted TK and hit it with a fish causing fires about 31 miles NE of Takao. The Balao silently slipped away undetected.
Sian was subjected to another artillery bombardment and Chinese loses were light.
At Lanchow an IJA bombardment caused extremely light casualties, but the growing Japanese force is expected to take the city sooner rather than later.
The Nationalist Chinese made another appeal to Washington for more artillery and better planes. They were given the same answer as usual, when it comes available they will get it. In the meantime the Japanese look set on knocking China out of the war. If this happens the Allies will face a daunting problem of Japanese manpower increases facing them. FDR has prodded Moscow to become active against the Japanese, but the response is still the same cry for a second front in Europe.
Midway is bursting at the seams in preparation for Operation Revenge.
Slim still hasn't had a minute of time in a Corsair, but he's chomping at the bit as the time draws near and the scuttle butt has them being thrown directly into battle.

In the afternoon another ASW TF located and pounded a sub, possibly the same one, 4 miles away. Debris and oil were spotted in the water but no confirmed kill has been awarded.
Kweiyang was attacked again today, but fighters were part of the strike. Damage and casualties were light and 4 X Helen were reported to have been damaged.
Mandalay was targeted by a maximum effort raid today and 24 X Blenheim, 47 X Liberator VI, 58 X B-25J, 43 X B-24D and an escort of 44 X P-38G flew. The Japanese put up a spirited defense with 38 X Zero, 22 X Jack and 47 X Tony of which 14 X Zero were destroyed (6 damaged), 7 X Jack downed (8 damaged) and 29 X Tony were shot down. Allied aircraft losses were 9 X Blenheim (4 damaged), 8 X Liberator VI (11 damaged), 13 X B-25J (9 damaged), 4 X B-24D (9 damaged) and 33 X P-38G. The damage to the base was very heavy and the suspected casualties to the ground troops was also placed at heavy.
A PBY Catalina I was destroyed by the CAP of 18 X Tojo at Wyndham.

Benham continues to escort the convoy and they changed their course for Baker Island where they will have some ships join them on their journey back to Pearl Harbor. What worries Phil is that the word is some of the vessels joining them are damaged and will slow the convoy's speed by a couple of knots.

The Coastal Guns at Broome fired at an IJN TF that was unloading troops inflicting very heavy casualties on the Japanese while also scoring hits on a PC and a PG, both of which were burning. As the landings continued the guns continued to deal out death and destruction hitting a PC and more troops.
Derby was bombed by Japanese LBA and suffered moderate damage. The CAP of a lone Spit and 5 X P-38G acquitted themselves well but suffered the price as a lone Lightning safely returned to the devastated base. Many planes on the ground are now shattered wrecks. Many Japanese planes were destroyed and damaged in the attack, though confirmation of exact numbers was impossible.
A B-17E spotted the BB Yamato at 123 miles from Broome and claimed a bomb hit on her. Later the same plane reported seeing the BB Haruna 127 miles from Broome.
Repeated attacks on IJN TFs approaching Broome have been fruitless.
An Allied artillery bombardment attack at Broome resulted in very light Japanese casualties.
Lanchow's defenders had very light casualties from the artillery bombardment of their defenses.

Ed's bombardment TF has formed and makes for Wake Island. He makes his flag on the BB Colorado. A CV TF will form and follow tomorrow and lend their planes to the attack.
The Palawan sailed as part of a convoy to pick up troops at Fiji and then transport them to Luganville. At Luganville they will unload and then load the 40th Division to take them to Lunga. This is in preparation for an operation that they know nothing of yet. Red marvels at the number of ships involved in this undertaking and wishes that there were more escort vessels of larger size and more strength.
The only thing slowing the pace of the Allied plans is the lift capacity for amphibious operations. There are APs still under repair on the West Coast of the US from Operation Snowball and more are anticipated shortly from Operation Revenge. Should Wake fall easily then a decision will be made as to whether or not to go for Marcus Island too. Pending the results of Operation Revenge, Operation Classic will take place. The assets for Classic are almost completely in place except the needed shipping. Allied commanders in Washington DC have decided to focus on one operation at a time and bring, what they hope is, overwhelming power to bear on each target. Once the Japanese perimeter has been breached in several locations it is hoped that a Japanese pull back will happen. More operations are in the planning stages as troops, supplies and fuel are moving to their staging areas. The USN will be hard pressed to maintain, upgrade and keep the fleet at sea.

The Coastal Guns at Broome fired at IJN vessels and troops unloading over the beach. A PC was repeatedly hit and was on fire, another PG sustained multiple hits and an AP was struck and was burning. As the day wore on another PG was hit repeatedly as was a PC. When the evening came another PC was hit. Japanese ground losses were reportedly very heavy for the day.
The SS Haddock attacked a TK, but the escorts drove her off. Her report didn't give a location.
A naval bombardment of Broome did light damaged to the base and it's facilities, but casualties were very high.
The SS Grunion was attacked near Broome by IJN DDs and later the sub tried an attack on an AP in the area, but missed. She later made another attempt after the sunset, but failed. At sunset a Dave made an attack on her, but failed to hit the sub.
An ASW attack 41 miles SE of Midway by USN DDs hit an IJN sub and sunk her.
An air attack on Derby by carrier based planes was met by a paltry CAP of a Spit and 4 X P-38G. As the smoke cleared and the reports came it it appeared that the Japanese suffered 3 X Zero downed, 6 X Val destroyed (15 damaged) and 10 X Kate shot down (19 damaged). Allied planes destroyed in the air and on the ground were a Spitfire, 9 X P-38G, 2 X B-24D, 4 X B-17E, a Beaufort and a PBY. The base sustained heavy damage, but casualties were light. Derby then underwent an air raid from land based planes a couple of hours later and the Allies could get no planes in the air. Japanese losses to ground fire were 3 X Nick damaged, 5 X Sally damaged, 9 X Helen damaged and 2 X Dinah were also damaged. A B-17E and a B-24D were destroyed and the base and the ground troops were lightly hit.
The Japanese shipping at Broome underwent an attack by 3 X B-17E, 3 X B-24D and 4 X P-38G and the Japanese CAP of 15 X Zero tore into them with a vengeance. Three of the Zeros were damaged and 5 of the bombers were shot up, but no ships were hit. Another attack on by 3 unescorted B-24Ds was met by 23 X Zero, one of which was damaged, and a bomber went down while again no shipping was hit. Three B-17E then came roaring in and 40 X Zero pounced on them. No bombers or ships were hit and a Zero was shot up.
A Japanese Bombardment attack on Lanchow and the Chinese response resulted in light losses to both sides.
Sian witnessed continued artillery exchanges throughout the day and Japanese casualties were thought to have been light while the Chinese had moderately heavy losses.

Phil has spent another sleepless night in his bunk. He keeps having the same nightmare and he dares not tell anybody about it.
Yesterday the Russian 14th Army repulsed a German attack SE of Leningrad.
Kiel was raided today by the US 8th Air Force. 3 U-boats were destroyed.

The Coastal Guns at Broome fired at Japanese ships and troops as the gunners worked feverishly serving their weapons. A PC was hit several times, a DD took a couple of hits and Japanese troops suffered very heavy casualties as they were landing. Allied artillery pounded the Japanese positions and inflicted heavy losses while the Japanese artillery replied, administering heavy casualties on the Allied force.
Derby was visited by the KB's fliers who did heavy damage to the base and scrapped 4 X B-17E. Ground losses were light, 4 X Val went down (19 Damaged) and 3 X Kate were destroyed (21 damaged). The Japanese LBA struck Derby next Derby, destroying an additional 2 X B-17E, doing additional light damage to the base while ground fire claimed to have damaged 5 X Sally and 6 X Helen.
A determined Japanese assault on Lanchow saw both sides sustain heavy casualties in the bitter fighting while the defensive network was slightly weakened.
Sian's defenders shelled the Japanese and it was thought that the casualties were high as a result. The Japanese guns answered and the Chinese had light losses.
The SS Snook was scuttled today with the sub Dolphin taken on the remaining crew and Snook's skipper.
A general attack towards Darwin has been ordered and the Japanese force at the rail junction will be attacked as soon as the troops reach that point.
The forces at Derby will attack the Japanese troops that moved adjacent to their perimeter while some of the forces moved to the rail junction outside of Derby to try and keep the line of retreat open. The troops at Broome have been ordered to retreat. The Allied commanders believe that the Japanese forces in Australia number over 300K and that the force is growing.
Survival in Australia will hinge on Operations Revenge and Classic. These are dark days for the Allies in the Pacific. Classic is on the back burner as Operation King is in full swing, having moved past the planning stages.
Ed's “Old Gals” continue towards their target and he and his staff tirelessly go over everything trying to cover all angles. The CVs are just over the horizon and it's a welcome thought having their strike power and fighters around.
Stalin makes inquiries as to when and where the Americans will be arriving. Washington hasn't supplied any concrete answers yet.
Pete wearily climbs out of the PBY and looks at the flight engineer who just shrugs and says “The line mechanics will have to take care of it in the morning. The plane is tired and she could use new engines.” Pete thinks back to the Pirates and how the stuff they latched on to was in top condition. If only we had that letter Bill used to wave in everyone's faces, he thinks.
Red stands at the rail just staring at nothing letting his mind wander when Cookie appears and says, “Thinking about that girl? Will you resume the hunt when we get back to Noumea?” Red just nods for the first question and shrugs at the second.

The tired gun crews at Broome continue to fire on Japanese shipping and troops that are still pouring ashore. No ships are hit, but Japanese casualties were moderate. A couple of Alfs overflew Broome and one of them was hit by ground fire, causing it to retire. The Japanese artillery bombarded the Allied forces at Broome and the artillery was on the mark, inflicting very heavy losses on the defenders.
At Derby the Japanese bombarded the Allied forces who took moderate casualties. The 2nd Australian Division was attacked by 86 X Vals and 94 X Kates who administered heavy casualties to the troops. Ground fire brought down a Val and damaged another while 4 X Kate were also damaged. The 3rd Australian Division was hit by 11 X Sally and the troops knocked down one of them and damaged 6 others while they themselves suffered very light losses. The 4th Australian Division was attacked by 9 X Sally and two went down in flames while 5 others were hit. Casualties were very light to the troops. The 24th USA Division was visited by 10 X Betty and 10 X Helen (5 damaged) and losses from the bombing were very light. The 9th Australian Division was raided by 6 X Betty (1 damaged) and 3 X Helen (2 damaged). There were no casualties reported.
The Allied attack at Derby was an abysmal failure that cost very heavy casualties to them while the Japanese lost heavily.
Another attack at Lanchow saw the Chinese repulse the Japanese. Both sides had moderate losses.
About 42 miles S of Sian a Chinese bombardment dealt out extremely light losses to the Japanese.
At Sian the IJA bombardment resumed and the Chinese took light casualties.
The entire front in the Broome and Derby area is on the verge of collapse. A very large concentration of Allied troops is not enough to stop the onslaught of the Japanese. With the loss of a forward port and air bases the Allied plans of attack must now be rethought and PM Curtin is screaming for more Allied aid. FDR has informed the Australian government that other than what was previously promised there will be no other help forthcoming.
Ed's bombardment force will hit Wake in the early morning tomorrow and the naval air should do the same. Operation Revenge troops will start loading tomorrow.
Pete has just finished another training flight and storms into HQs. He wants to know if these beat up planes are supposed to be able to get the job done. “I don't mind risking my life to beat the Japanese, but I do mind being expected to do my job in crap like what we've been given.” He doesn't even know about the crash today of another training flight and nobody wants to be the one to tell him. There's no senior people around to complain to so he just heads off.
The SS Tarpon should arrive at Auckland tomorrow where she will undergo a refit. The crew is looking forward to time ashore while the work is done. CDR Wallace has reminded his crew that they are expected to stay out of trouble.
Red has been feeling low lately and he knows that it'll be a while before the Palawan returns to Noumea, if at all. He has been down on himself for never even asking the girl's name. Cookie has tried to cheer him up, but has failed. The only thing that will help is time and nobody knows if there will even be a tomorrow for them.

There's plenty of armor and antitank LCUs in Oz, but the problem has been not enough to face the force that the Japanese have sent to Australian. No recon has forced a stumble into them way of discovery. A new plan has been hatched and will be put to the test as soon as possible. Steve is playing a very interesting game and has anticipated many of my moves so far. Soon I hope to throw so much at him that he'll break rather than bend.

A Nell has spotted the BB Mississippi at Wake Island just prior to the bombardment and intercepted radio transmissions indicate that the plane has made it's report.
The DD Craven hit a mine at Wake Island as the bombardment did light damage. Casualties were thought to have been heavy among the troops there. The shore guns fired back and the cruisers Northampton, Indianapolis and Raleigh each was hit once and only the paint was chipped. The Craven was immediately detached to return to Midway and though she's sustained moderate flooding and systems damage it is expected that she will arrive safely at Midway.
Myitkyina was hit by 23 X Blenheim, 51 X Liberator VI, 63 X B-25J, 46 X B-24D, 45 X P-38G and 8 F-5A (just looking around). A lone Tony was up and was immediately pounced on and destroyed. A Blenheim and a B-25J were damaged by ground fire as the base was very heavily damaged. Casualties to the Japanese troops were thought to have been light.
Broome was probed by IJN float planes and a Dave was damaged. The 2nd Australian Division at Broome was hit by many Vals and Kates and casualties were heavy while 1 of each type of plane was damaged. A Japanese artillery bombardment inflicted heavy casualties on the Allied troops.
The 7th USA Division at the rail junction (remember there?) was attacked by 14 X Betty (8 damaged) and losses to the troops were very light.
At Derby the Japanese bombarded the Allied defenders, who sustained negligible casualties.
Wake Island was raided by 52 X SBD, 36 X TBF and 16 F4F-4 and they met no opposition other than ground fire. A SBD was destroyed (5 damaged and 5 TBF were also damaged in the attack that did moderate damage to the airbase. Japanese casualties were estimated to have been light.
At Lanchow the Japanese conducted another assault and suffered very heavy losses while the fortifications were slightly damaged and Chinese casualties were heavy.
Sian underwent another artillery attack today that resulted in very light casualties to the defenders.
The Tarpon arrived at Auckland and will undergo her refit there before being assigned to either Noumea or Brisbane. The crew can't get off of their boat fast enough to go and “take in the local sights.”

Not one to accept defeat so easily Pete tries to get in touch with General Bill Donovan, but can't get past the switchboard operator. Finally in exasperation he says, “Tell the boss that we can't do our jobs with the crap that the military is passing off to us. If he expects anything at all we must have planes that work and the parts for them. Don't forget to give him my name. Thanks for your time.” Pete hangs up and places one more call, to Sylvia at the hotel. They talk for a while and then they say their good byes.

A Kate attacked the SS Gudgeon 55 miles off of Broome, but failed to hit her and the sub managed to slip inside of the screening ships and hit the CV Hiryu with a torpedo. In the following hours the sub was subjected to attacks that had her bracketed a couple of times. Her systems are OK and so is the hull's integrity so the hunt continues.
A naval bombardment of Broome did light damage to the base and ground troops sustained heavy casualties. A BB was hit by return fire.
Ed's TF bombarded Wake Island and the coastal guns fired back, hitting nothing. Damage to the base was light and casualties were thought to have been heavy.
The 2nd Australian Division, at Broome was attacked by Vals and Kates, sustained heavy losses and all of the planes retired safely. The Japanese assaulted Broome and took the base at a heavy cost to them. Allied losses were very heavy and the units retreated.

Thanks Pete, you've done what I couldn't do and you probably saved lives. Care to join me for a drink to celebrate the good news?”
Dave looks with satisfaction at the new tires he has managed to obtain. The black market is booming and the more rationing there is the more that finds it's way into the black market. Sandy doesn't approve, but Dave reminds her that there are people using worn out tires and that it's very dangerous. He also justifies his dealings with, “If I don't trade for them somebody else will.”

The SS Sunfish, near Roti Island, found herself in the path of an IJN TF and lined up a perfect solution on a BB thought to have been the Nagato. The BB was struck by 2 fish and was on fire as a result. The Sunfish made good her escape while the escorts tried to find her.
Myitkyina was attacked by 64 X B-25J and 26 X P-38G and the planes hit the base heavily. 6 of the bombers were damaged by AA and a recon F-5A was also damaged. The Japanese had no planes in the air. Ground troops were thought to have sustained light casualties.
An air attack on the 6th Australian Cav Brigade, sitting astride the road between Broome and Derby as a blocking force, was conducted by 67 X Val and 56 X Kate. Troops losses were heavy while no planes were damaged.

PM Curtain is very happy when he's informed of the Japanese being thrown back and his generals now believe that the way to Alice Springs and Townsville to be secure. The next order of business is the American request to reshuffle the units and bring them back up to strength.
Dave has had a busy day and after washing up he collapses into a chair at the table for dinner. He talks with Sandy about many things and he finally asks if there have been any letters today. She just shakes her head and silently resumes eating.
Some of Tarpon's crew managed to get into a brawl that spilled out into the street. The SP arrived a short time later, after being called by the bar's owner. 6 of Tarpon's men didn't get away and spent the night in the brig to sleep it off.
Pete wakes up with a massive hangover and is glad that Sylvia was around last night to see him drunk. He thinks that sticking to tea would be a better course of action in the future. There are no training flights today as the mechanics are busily taking inventory of arriving parts and scheduling repairs for the planes.
Great Britain announced limited recruitment of women into the Home Guard.
A massive response by the Germans to the uprising in Warsaw began today. Over the course of the next month 60,000 Jews will be massacred in the Ghetto.

The SS S-31 was attacked by ASW assets 100 miles off of Gili Gili but she silently gave them the slip before any damage was done.
Chungking was subjected to a bombing by 73 X Helen, 13 X Jack and 28 X Tojo. 14 bombers were damaged by AA and the base had moderate damage and very light casualties, but 6 X I-153c, 4 X I-16c and 2 X SB-2c were destroyed on the ground.
Myitkyina was bombed by 33 X B-24D, 30 X P-38G and a few snoopers (F-5A). 5 bombers were damaged by ground fire and the base took light damage.
Derby was attacked by 26 X Sally, 20 X Helen, 10 X Zero, 3 X Oscar and 17 X Tony. The base had light damage, no casualties and 8 X Sally and 10 X Helen were damaged by AA. The 6th Australian Cav Brigade on the road to Derby was hit by 24 X Val and 40 X Kate and loses were light. No planes were hit. The Japanese continued to bombard the defenders who sustained light casualties.
At the rail junction another Allied attack on fresh Japanese troops was successful. The Japanese suffered very heavily and retreated towards Darwin while the Allied forces sustained moderate casualties.
Wake Island was hit by 53 X SBD (10 damaged), 36 X TBF (2 destroyed 7 damaged) and 18 X F4F-4. Reports indicated the damage to the airbase was moderate and ground troops sustained light losses.

Gilbert Edwards had decided early on in the war that he would wait to be called rather than try to enlist. He finds it odd that the letter was dated April 19th, his birthday. He's glad that this can be an escape from the reality that has been his life to date. Living in Coney Island in a tenement building with his family is something that he's longed to get away from. Maybe if he's lucky he can become a pilot in the Army Air Corps as he's always wanted to fly.

Combat
The SS S-31 was attacked by ASW assets 100 miles off of Gili Gili but she silently gave them the slip before any damage was done.
Chungking was subjected to a bombing by 73 X Helen, 13 X Jack and 28 X Tojo. 14 bombers were damaged by AA and the base had moderate damage and very light casualties, but 6 X I-153c, 4 X I-16c and 2 X SB-2c were destroyed on the ground.
Myitkyina was bombed by 33 X B-24D, 30 X P-38G and a few snoopers (F-5A). 5 bombers were damaged by ground fire and the base took light damage.
Derby was attacked by 26 X Sally, 20 X Helen, 10 X Zero, 3 X Oscar and 17 X Tony. The base had light damage, no casualties and 8 X Sally and 10 X Helen were damaged by AA. The 6th Australian Cav Brigade on the road to Derby was hit by 24 X Val and 40 X Kate and loses were light. No planes were hit. The Japanese continued to bombard the defenders who sustained light casualties.
At the rail junction another Allied attack on fresh Japanese troops was successful. The Japanese suffered very heavily and retreated towards Darwin while the Allied forces sustained moderate casualties.
Wake Island was hit by 53 X SBD (10 damaged), 36 X TBF (2 destroyed 7 damaged) and 18 X F4F-4. Reports indicated the damage to the airbase was moderate and ground troops sustained light losses.
