Elsewhere we are airlifting in a BF to Mandalay and Oscar now patrol the sky of Central Burma. We have moved in recon are are looking for the base the B-17 are operating from... we will look at a Netty strike to try and get them on the ground...

The regiment has come up to Rangoon and we shock attack with about 500AV next turn. We have been bombing the ground troops every day so they should be fairly heavily disrupted. We have enough supply so we have a good chance of taking it. If we don't I'll have to turn back the 21st Mixed Bde to help out.

They have marched back into the southernmost Burmese base with remnants of forces from Thailand/Victoria Point. I am airlifting in the paras to hold the base...

Still moving into position and building strength.

A basefore has now arrived at Nanyang, which is a level 4 airfield. Soon the airforce will initiate the destruction of the Chinese airforce on the ground, then focus on the ground war in a push towards Sian.

We are also considering sending forces into southern chinas to seize a base or two on their rail line, which will limit their ability to supply and reinforce sectors.

But we need some more medium bombers.

a few attacks no bangs. They are trying to interceot our convoys off PM and Balikpapan. They hit an AK off PM with a Dud, but it looks to have dmaged the ship, even without a bang...

We are reorganising in anticipation of crossing the Irrawady.

We need more engineers and air base units, may have to buy some out.

We are reconing into India to determine their main bases and tactical dispositions... in anticipation of doing something nasty

We are still discussing strategic options for the raiding we want to do, there are several targets... but Fiji looks to be still amoung the top ones... but is already becoming a tougher nut to crack... we want to go in with 4 Divs whereever we go.

China
North of Wuchow we just can't make headway aginst some troops we have trapped there. The have some "cavalry" on the way and so we are running out of time.

Industry
We increased both Ha 32 (148 with 28 repairing now) and Ha 33 (126 with 104 repairing) and turned Nell production back on as we have some airgroups coming "soon" that need them.

We are sucking down resources to the home islands nicely. Fuel is starting to flow Ok from Brunei and soon Tarakan to the operational locations, but none back to the home island yet.

Burma 06 Feb 1942

Here is the current situation. I'm resting and cleaning up a bit before advancing north... there are no real combat formations in front of me, but I do have to contain those to the rear.

Supply is an issue, as are engineers, both are on the way. I have about 2 divs in the theatre at the moment.

Chiang Mai is my main airbase, although there is an allied unit currently cutting it off to the south. It is about to hit level 5, I intend to build to 6 in the short term.

I'd like to get to Lashio before the Chinese can, but need to clear out Taung Gyi to free up forces to do that.

Basing the air div at Pegu provides coverage to a large number of airbases. I intend to build them all to 4 to provide the ability to shuttle around.

The enemy are in strength at Chittagong. I'm now in a position to begin to isolate from the sea. I can probably launch some paradrop disruption activities in the border soon. Combined with the movement of more fighters and bombers into the area I intend to attempt to weaken them. I would like to go after their 4E aircraft by getting them on the ground.

An option remains for a raid from the sea... but not for at least a month.

The Thai div shock attacks across the river and defeats the 13th Burma Rifles Bn, which flees north. The rail to Chiang Mai is now open again.

Burma is going well. We have 60 Oscar at Mandalay. And we are builing up a 100 strong Strike force of Netties and a similar number of Zero's.

Soon they will sweep and try to systematically destroy the Allied air force in India.

Supply is moving in as are more troops, in particular engineers and BF.

Surprised to see no fighters at Townsville. This base is safe from non-carrier based aircraft as long as there is a CAP as Zero don't have the range.

I like a fully operational Balikpapan as it fuels my fleet (to and from Truk). Some say ship that Oil to Honshu, but if I have a huge surplus of Oil there already, I'm hoping that the Allies leave those refineries alone late in the game to get a chance of converting the oil to fuel. If I look at Andy's game vs PzB, I can still have Palembang fuel shipped to Honshu while Balikpapan and Java fuel operations in the SRA. I stockpile fuel rather than oil as was the case in WITP.

Strategic Review
With the taking of Singapore and Bataan it is time for a strategic review.

Back on the first page, second post, we outlined our intent:

There are two fundamental approaches, a force approach and a terrain approach. In the force approach you bring the enemy to battle and destroy their ability to wage war, then take what land you want. The terrain approach focus on capturing the ground.

We intend the former. We have determined the enemy's centre of gravity is their ability to generate a multi divisional amphibious attack. To stop them doing that we intend to target:

Medium and heavy bombers.
Ground combat units.
Amphib ships.

So far we have failed to engage their medium and heavy bombers. We have neutered their effect though which has enabled us to advance quickly.

We have killed the "standard" ground combat units quite effectively and ruthlessly. We are about to launch on the next stage that aims to kill those units that are beyond "normal".

Amphibs. Here we have done good! We have sunk around 28 xAP, including about 6 big ones... Many more are damaged. If we can keep this up (and we have plans to) then their ability to launch simultaneous multi-divisional attacks will be very limited.


Warships. While not a high priority we have 4BB and 1 BC, 5CA and 10 CL listed as sunk. While these will be replaced we have lost 1 BB, 1 CA, 1 CL. So we have significantly improved our force ratio at the moment, which gives us great fredom of action, in particular in the Pacific.


So what now?

We need to target the 2E and 4E bombers. These are currently concentrated in India, and probably PH (they aren't in Oz). Of these India is viable and an operational plan is underway to achieve that task.

Ground Combat units are more difficult. The enemy has built up Fiji, there are now over 70 fighters there and at least 1 US Regiment, along with arty and probably engineers. This makes it a prime target... An operational plan is in development for this.

Another option is Ceylon/Southern India. But first we have to neuter their aircraft...

Midway is always of interest, it stops a forward sub base... and threatens PH, so they can't commit much forward.

The Aleutions are also an option in about 2 months....



While we look at those options for "smash and grabs" we are now considering our defensive perimeter. To do that we need to "think like the enemy" for a bit...

There are 6 main approaches. Burma, Java/West DEI, Timor Nth PNG, SWPAC, CENTPAC, Aleutions

We have closed off Java/West DEI, Timor, SWPAC for the forseeable future. We intend to continue this by denying Australia as a safe base... for as long as we can.

We can't stop the others... but we can concentrate our defences their first to dig in hard and prepare. Burma is number one priority. Marshalls we will defend at about historic levels... not sure on the Aleutions yet...

Overall we have done good, now to maintain that advantage as long as possible...

Mike's lessons learn and how he is an economics minister.

I have Helen Ia increased to 120 per month as they are my Army ASW planes. They don't get the MAD until later in the war, but they have good range. I want a large stockpile. use most of my 9 and 12 plane Army air units (those that cannot recombine) for ASW only with a few larger sized for critical areas.

Batan Island - place BF x2 and Construction to expand AF to size 4. A large (27 plane) Helen (high ASW and LowN) will go here to patrol the critical Formosa Straits.

Cocos Island - BF x2 and Construction go here to expand AF to size 4. A 12 plane Emily with high Naval Search and NavB experience. You can reach the western map edge and cause some harassment of any transports trying to get to and from Australia from India.

Naha and Amani Osima both have Resources that need some pick up from time to time.

Shanghai to/from Shimonoseki - Resources and return with supply (20K). 12x Kasu-D xAKLs and 3x Kiso PB

Naga - port built up to size 4
Davao - do the same so Resource on Mindanao flow here.
Philippine Archipelago - 5 Resource producing bases have size 2 or slightly larger ports (max docked ships 12k). 3x TF of 7x Daigen xAKLs and 2x To'su PB (11,980) will fit nicely into each and then unload at Naga. Later, a Aden based TF will take them to Honshu.

Miri - the small 1250 size TKs to/from Singapore and/or Manila.

Palembang - 2x TF of your 7950 size TKs to/from Singapore with 3 SC/PB (keep total size below 48k to allow docking). They will be busy for months and months.

Port Hedland & Koepang - build ports to size 4. Then 2x TF of 15x Gozan xAKs and 3x PB as CS convoys (ship in some fuel to Koepang). I expand over to Exmouth as a buffer for any counter-invasion coming this way later in the war.

Boela & Babo - expand ports to size 3. A TF with 6x size 1250 TKs and 2 Kiso PB to/from Babeldoab to pick up oil.

Balikpapan, Makassar, Koepang, and Boela - I use a few TF with 10x Aden and 2 Ansyu PBs to/from Honshu. Again, under 48k to allow docking. Occasional return with supply.

Tulagi and Nauru Island - build up AF to size 2. Allows those short legged Vals (17 hexes) to get to/from Solomons and Marshalls instead of the long way through Truk.

A single BF at Ponape and Woleai to allow short legged planes to get to and through Truk from each direction.

Try setting your CAP in Burma in a Hi/Lo manner. The Oscars at 20k (or 15k) and the Zeros at 31k. This way your better plane may get a bounce if his fighters go after the Oscars. You should get a few easy kills if his fighters are at a lower setting than the Zero.

Some of your large BF and large AA units come with or can upgrade to radar. Make sure you have some in Burma.

Glad to share my hard earned knowledge on economic issues. Most of the transport issues around the Home Islands were addressed by Mike Solli just after the game came out and his spreadsheet is a must for it.

Thanks Yes I use CAP that way, in the game against Joe and NIk the P-39 were on low, Hurricans and P-40E high... and it worked very well.

We have 40 Oscar and 20 Zero at Mandalay now... but I suspect they will lick their wounds... a pity as we aren't ready yet for our air offensive, and the more we attrit over our lines the better

I'm going to set up an Oscar and Zero unit as a training sqn to the rear, and suck individual pilots forward as they become trained. This is different to how I have played as Allies...

I'm looking for those BF... trying to get stuff forward now.

I think I will set up Tavoy as the main inport/export point. These means using smaller ships and smaller convoys, but the risk is far less. Maybe we will also build Moulmein over time and base a SCTF there...

Getting enough stuff into Akyab is going to be a challenge... it is very attractive, but the military geography favours the allies unless we can have sea control... which means we need to create air control over that area. To do that we need more BF and supplies...

The invasion forces at Singapore are gathering nicely... andother couple of turns and we will be away.

I'll have to look at that spreadsheet by Mike (any hints on where to find it?). I plan to post about our convoys soon, I'm still getting used to the changes in resources, but overall happy that we are getting them home nicely, but there are lots of ships still to task!
