He will expect you to do the unexpected, so attacking Port Moresby is the unexpected move!?!

Yes, but what if he expects me to expect that he will expect me to do the unexpected?

Exactly!  It seems your other plan is quite cunning as well, "So cunning that you could put tail on it and call it a weasel".

Agreed. Feint somewhere else and then go straight in.

That could work too. Capture Efate and Luganville, approach Noumea with a dummy landing force, let him do the math and see if I can provoke a carrier battle near noumea but retain 114th Regt aboard the fastest transports North of the Solomons and try to get to PM 3 days before the game ends.

Day 1: Japanese forces push down the Northern side of the Solomons. A US sub positions itself exactly under the final location of the Jap CV's but there is no attack. The Jap subs from Noumea comb NW. Jap transports and support ships move North to avoid a possible riposte by the US carriers. Only a small force in the middle of the Coral Sea is spotted. This is likely a replensihment TF.

Day 2: Shoho and the Jap CV's rendezvous W of Ontong Java. Allied ships seen W of Rennel Is are almost certainly the two carrier TF's as search plane is shot down. The two groups are exactly 9 hexes apart, within max range for the Kates but there is no attack. They were likely not spotted by carrier aircraft, just the sea planes from Shortlands.

A Jap sub puts two torps into HMAS Australia and she sinks. First blood.

OK...the repairman came and went. Nice little Russian guy, Ivan (really, I'm not making it up). I now know the "E-13" error on the Bosch washer means "failure to drain". All that was needed was to unplug the beast, open the little access door at lower right and inspect the drain line trap/filter. You know those socks that disappear? We found one. The drain trap is engineered to have easy access. Ivan said, "Eet is weary easy on Bosch. Those Germans, you know." [:D]

I was tempted to see what he thought about the Panther vs. the T-34 but he was in a hurry.

Cost me $80. Could have done it myself if I weren't such an indolent slug.
For an extra $20, did you ask him to say, "Manuevering thrusters ahead one quarter, Capteen."?

I believe the height of unexpectedness would be to invade Truk! [:'(][:D]
Seriously...for this exercise take a look at Brisbane and the Allied defensive forces there. It's quite doable with the available Japanese forces on hand for PM.

Assessment: He didn't fall for the dummy landing force. There is one conly ombat squad aboard. Perhaps I will send them to take Rossell Island for a possible seaplane base. It appears he has deduced a likely attack toward Noumea and has positioned his carriers aggressivley near Rennel Is. I dont mind an early confrontation. If the IJN wins then the attack proceeds. If we lose the we give up and try to get it back in the other game.

Ideally for the Allies, they would like to engage at 4 hexes or less to make use of the TBD's. I would like to fight at a greater distance. I could send the carriers SE and mix it up but if the USN passed in the night and lit into the transports I would have an appointment with disembowelment. We proceed SE.

There will never be a 9 hex CV strike...max allowed range is 8 for Jap and 7 for Allies [:)]

Against sea targets - I found out to my surprise that carrier air can hit land targets out to the max plane range.

I found out by receiving a port strike at some range I had thought was impossible - maybe it 12 or 14 hexes? - and my opponent told me the 7 and 8 range limits are only for attacks on TF's. Luckily for me the attack was made with dive bombers into a massive flak trap! [:D]

C'mon Cap'n. I'm rooting for you in this. I need someone easy for my second round, if I make it that far. [:'(]

I know it's purile, juvenile and very 'snigger' 'snigger', but I just can't get around the whole "rooting for someone/thing". I figure that is something you should really be doing yourself.

And just as it happens, while in most instances I will come down on the side of blighty and 'English started in England' (even if they have completely ground it to a paste since then), but working in IT I tend to lean towards the American pronunciation of a 'router' rather than the British 'rooter' for, well, much the same reason.

As for who I um support - go Cap go. Slap the penguin

Wobbly,

I'm all for purile and the like, goodness knows. I even fancy myself a relatively facile learner in the ways of the world, whatever that's worth. But I've got no idea what you're talking about here, mate. I can only imagine what the 'rooting' term conjures up away from the North American shores-but I genuinely don't know. [&:]

But but....this is a small scenario mine's a campaign....it would be much easier for you to let him win [:'(]

Ha ha - well that is classic. In kiwi, or maybe even down-under speak, rooting is slang for something most teenage boys are attempting to achieve, and most married men no longer get.

Horizontal dance moves.

Don't know its origin, but I'm gonna guess it's phallic to do with what plants do/have.
