Koblenz '44

A hypothetical scenario that moves Operation Market-Garden from Arnhem to Koblenz. It's been tested with 3.4 and everything seems ok. If anyone would like to try it out, it can be had at [defunct link]

Here's a shot of part of the front line, 5th Armored Division has been pressing toward Bitburg, 1st Infantry Division has just arrived and is ready to break thru. 2nd Armored Division is on the road (off shot) behind the 1st Infantry ready to exploit.

Here's the target, Koblenz and its bridges over the Rhine and Mosel rivers. Several nice landing areas, and intelligence reports the area is only lightly defended, by a few old men and young boys.

Good work, Steve!

I was wondering when you'd put your site out for the rest of the people!

Steve,

reminds me a bit about the 'Drive to the Ruhr' variant in 'Crusade in Europe'... but you really got faith to let'm drop and head towards the Rhine and Moselle valley... Well, I guess the ground troops are Patton's boys not Monty's 30th Corps chaps, aye?

Thanks vsadek. Remagen was inspired by an SPI boardgame of the same name from 1976. Its quick, easy and fun !
... but you really got faith to let'm drop and head towards the Rhine and Moselle valley...

Faith and some prayers, eh! It's all explained in the scenario briefing and the additional designers notes document. Basically, Market-Garden = 60 miles from Neerpelt to Arnhem, this scenario = 60 miles from Bitburg to Koblenz. If given the choice between Monty going the distance while staying on one road and crossing a bunch of canals and rivers, or US troops going the same distance with no water obstacles and several roads, which would you choose ?

Steve,

I wasn't criticising the scenario at all. And I dl'd and reading through the scenario description while I am leaving you this note. A daring and cunning plan indeed. I shall see how I/my PBEM opponent might fare defending/piercing the Reich...

OK, back to the Chir river for me... OOB and TO&E need some fine tuning.

I know you weren't criticising, I didn't mean to appear defensive either. I was just pointing out the similarities between OMG and this hypothetical. Definately bold in either case, leaving an airborne force on its own for a couple days so far behind enemy lines.

How long before you post the Chir River scenario ?

Well, I revised/or about to revise the TO&E. I am struggling to find the simple TO&E for my 4th wave German Inf.Div. I was thinking about 3x Eng 3x Mount.Rifle and a Sec.Det. of 9xLight Rifle, 3xMG and 3xMP, as well as the Truck/Horse component with a 1/3 ratio. I know it really doesn't matter, but I want to be as close as possible. For the Soviets I found a really cool site and double checked it with Russian docs and records. I won't use Com&Sup squads in my German HQs in order to reflect that German units in general were quite flexible. :/

Thanks Silvain !

Kilink, if you hadn't seen them, there are some simple to&e's in this thread, starting on page 7. Maybe they can help.

Danke Steve!

I already use Jon Martina's TO&E, but haven't seen any for HQs. That's a thread we should kick off I guess. Anyway. I decided to give the 336.Inf.Div a platoon of MP, enginners, mounted rifle, light rifle and an MG section plus the usual transport assests for the supply columsn. That should do the trick.

For the sake of chrome please remember TO&E's are theoretical papers. Any resemblance with troops on the ground is just mere coincidence. Even more in 1944...

I am aware of that, but having the KStN/TO&E doesn't mean I gonna fill'm up 100%. I see it as a basic corset in a way. A skeleton where you some 'meat' on it ;) More than 50% of the German units are Alarmeinheiten anyway...

Re your other scenarios, i especially like your Goodwood scenario. But something else also got my attention.. Fire in the West - would you mind telling more about this one? What scale is it? Which parts of the West Front? What year?

Goodwood - It's a solitaire scenario, you run the Allies against the Germans in the 'Death Ride of the British Armor'. I'm running it thru 3.4 now and will post a new version soon.

Fire in the West - That's a catch all title for several planned projects. Currently we are working on a pbem scenario that starts September 1944, entire West Front, until Berlin falls (or the Allies reach the Elbe, not sure yet). When that is done, we'd like to make solitaire versions of it for both sides (not really sure if the German PO can handle it, or rather if I can figure out how to get him to). After that we'd like to try a 'D-Day to Berlin' (or Elbe) scenario. I'd also like to try a 'Strassbourg '44' scenario based on Devers plan to cross the Rhine (as discussed at TDG Forum). Get all that done and a couple years from now I might try a France 1940 scenario. Sorry, but all of this will happen no time soon.

Here's a shot of the map curtesy of Rick (TPOO) the great map maker. Its 5km, regiment/KG/RCT units, day turns I hope but might have to make it half week.

Fire in the West?

Oh my! If there is one scenario that gets me off my WWII Pacific/Far East TOAW fixation, that might be it. Looks fantastic! And I can wait.

[&o] [&o] for the map. Fantastic. Map making has always been a pain in TOAW.. You could make the map available to other designers in case the project gets cancelled/abandonded. (we need a map archive..)

Looks interesting, sounds interesting. Though half week turns on 5 km maps? I can understand your concern. Looking forward to this. :)
