Turn One -- Troops in Riga

Post by Beruldsen »

I've heard somewhere that you can transport infantry to Riga on Turn One. How do you do that?

So very much to learn...

You need to do at least 11 damage to Kuressare, the port NW Riga to elimate the zoc.

Yes, bomb it. Select city attack and click on the town in question. A popup will appear allowing to choose what part of the town you want to attack. Select port.

or move and take it. Not a problem but it means you wont be doing some of the classic t1 moves. I used to be a take Riga, minsk t1, Kiev T2 fan, now I am not so sure.

Got it. I assume I will need to do this before I bomb airfields.

Second question. I assume I have to ship transport from a city ... any limitations?

I've tried Op Barbarossa a few times and have had a real tough time taking Leningrad. I'm looking for suggestions...

You have limited shipping capacity (related to your ports IIRC).

And 1 damage to the port is actually enough to open up the shipping lane to Riga, but you need more damage if you want it to stay open. Currently there seems to be a bug that lets port repair up to 20%+ each turn, so don't expect the lane to stay open. Personally I have often got away with 10%+ damage to keep the lane open, but till the bug is fixed and the repairs go down to 3% each turn you will need a bit of luck.

Look at the "AGN Opening" thread here in the war room. Taking Riga with the tanks from the 4th Panzer Group has long been a strategy, bombing Kuressare and transporting 2 divisions (and an HQ) is now becoming the norm. The goal as the German player, in my opinion, is to get the tanks across the Daugava on the initial turn (on a broad front from Riga to Daugavpils) in order to maximize options for turn 2.

Here is a shot of a recent attempt of mine. As with all tries, it is not perfect, but it shows all the mobile units of the 4th panzer group over the river, two 18th Army divisions and their HQ in Riga, and the armies of the Soviets routed and isolated. With an opening like this any mop up can be done by the infantry, while the tanks can roam (most profitably towards Pskov) on turn 2. It takes some trials to do it ok.

For the life of me...I can't get that Zoc to open...and after 2 tries...my bombers are out of range. What am I doing wrong?

Click on an airfield in the north, one with Ju 88s (3rd LW airbase of the I Fliegerkorps, for instance).  Then with the attack city selected (F8), shift-right click on Kuressare.  Do this before attacking airfields.  I try to get the damage up a wee bit, but even just 3% seems to be enough.

Do I have to control Riga first?

Not to bomb Kuressare, but to land troops in Riga you must control it. There are no German amphibious actions, just sea movement.

One other thing that takes some getting used to is that because of FOW, it looks like you cannot naval transport to Riga. The path is clear for a few hexes and then "dark". However, if you have damaged Kuressare and hold Riga, if you select a unit in a friendly port (after setting Naval Transport), and right-click on Riga, and it should work. I recommend hitting the space bar once the route is confirmed, because it is a slow boat to Riga.

The infantry in Riga gambit makes sense, if you want a strong northerly advance; personally I prefer the option of using the rearward 18th Army corps (L Corps I believe) in the front line - open up the rail line to Memel, rail them into memel, then they have around 5 MP left to break open the frontier there, enabling the 16 MP infantry underneath to shoot northwards. However, I tend to open up with the wide spread across the Daugava river so don't like too much armour around Riga.  I should try the naval lift approach next time I play a PBEM game and see if it work.

The only pb is that it is a Startrek feature, not a WWII one.

Maybe... remember all those landings in norway in 1940? It's the equivalent. I just dont see the point in 'mucking about with boats'... paras and air mobile? that's a different story :)
