What would have been nice is if the rule book had informed us that we may very well be spotted when in fact we may think we haven't.

It's probably safest to assume that at any moment, anywhere on the map, any ship without massed fighter cover is subject to betty's swooping out of nowhere to torpedo half your task force.

"FOW" makes identifying bugs and problems with the game difficult since virtually everything in the game can be written off to "FOW"

You have the option to turn it off when starting a game.

Would that not be a part of the definition of Fog of War?

Good question. It would have been nice to know that. It catagorically states that IF you are spotted you have X DL. It would have been nice if it said,"if you have been spotted your TF MIGHT be assigned a DL of....".

Exactly what I was thinking when it happened.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, is as what it appears. All combat reports are suspect, etc. A great victory could indeed be a smashing defeat, etc.

It's all FOW.

That is not quite what s.10 of the manual states. Very significantly there is a difference between DL and MDL. Based on the limited information you have provided, I strongly suspect you have confused the MDL with DL.

I wouldn't have it any other way if I choose to turn on the FoW game option. That's what the FoW did in real life, too.

DL at turns end tells you nothing about DL during turn resolution. HA! [:'(]

Edit: oops I see Nomad already got that covered. [;)]
Youre expeience is not because of FOW but because DL has the tendency to decrease over time.

Detection level and Maximum detection level.
aka- How well you know what taskforce/unit is in a hex now (detection level)
And how well you knew where that taskforce /what was in that hex recently.

Naval air strikes get sent based on current detection level but a high MDL makes reaquiring a taskforce during the day easier.

I just assumed this to be the case when I started my campaigns almost a year and a half ago. This is the way it should be. Always hope for the best, but you had better plan for the worst....
