What's the point of a Momo Class DD?

Post by Ldeathbow »

Seriously...If it weren't a naval vessel, I'd use it as a paperweight [:)], But I don't want to get my battle plans all soggy. Fortunately there are only 2.

While it has typical speed, it seems lacking in almost EVERY other aspect. 42 rounds of ammo (total) for it's 3 deck guns makes it, IMO, ill suited to Bombard or Surface Combat missions (and only 2 torpedoes doesn't help that any) as that limited ammo will be expended in VERY short order. NO AA or ASW ability makes it all but useless as an escort, IMO, as your major threats will be (not neccesarrily in this order) Sub, Air and Surface units. For about 1 1/2 years, until 6/43, when the first upgrade is applied (and this class FINALLY gets both AA and ASW abilities, at the cost of the torpedoes - oh well, who uses torps to sink an aircraft [:)]) vessels of this class are 835 tons of deadweight.

I'd appreciate ANY opinion to the contrary, along with an example of a real use for this craft.

You can upgrade it later and it should be able to fill in as an escort.

Originally, it was intended to be a paperweight [:)], but later it was found suitable to be a training ship (according to the Japanese Warships of World War II handbook in my possession). Hope this helps, somewhat.

They were more DEs than DDs and they were adequate for that role (convoy escort).

Well known escort for Bungo Pete in his battles with Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable.

You're welcome.
