Now, the defences around Rostov: note the prepared line behind, in case I have to fall back towards Stalino. I've beefed up the defences in Taganrog in the turn between this shot and now.

And yes, I know, I have garrisoned some towns on the Sea of Azov coast because I didn't realise they are not ports. These fort zones have now been disbanded and the troops redeployed somewhere useful!

Now 6th Army. I didn't get quite far enough to the east with this force, but decided digging in was more important than pushing my tired infantry. Note the Panzer Corps deployed to 6th Army as firebrigade, avoiding C&C issues with either 2nd or 1st Pz Army which would be its natural home. The security unit is ready to move into the city if I need to send the panzers off to do something.

Skip over 4th Army -- it looks like 6th army. But in front of Moscow I am a little more worried. I didn't quite get there, alas, but have dug in 9th army with a lot of reserve armour:

Finally, north of Moscow... the value of capturing those northern cities (Kalinin, VV and Torzhov) shows -- on repaied raillines they are a home for my armour. North of here I've got the Finns and the top end of 16th Army; we are all the way to Cherepovets. I had to read the manual 3 times to convince myself that the Rybinsk reserve doesn't suddenly become passable in the ice!

Update on the blizzard: some evidence about the possibility that it isn't too bad

We have now completed both sides of Turn 32 (22 Jan 42).

At the start of the blizzard casualities were

GERMAN - 422671 (can 230K disabled) vs RUSSIAN - 3107476 (around 500K disabled)

two months of blizzard later...

GERMAN - 1195484 (880K disabled) vs RUSSIAN - 3962823 (820K disabled)

So, in 8 turns, I've taken 800K casualties, 75% disabled. He's endured around the same losses, mostly killed.

AFV losses in that period 300 German, 2000 Soviet.

Ground lost: first, in the south, Rostov is still hanging in there.
( more screen shots to come)
