ANW 3.10 Server Up

Post by TonyE »

Freshly installed this evening.

ANW 3.10a
Database: HUD3 1.5.0
Address: eischens.dyndns.org
Port 14342

Connection testing:
1. I could connect and start a session with Windows XP 32-bit without any settings change.
2. On Windows 7 the multiplayer client crashed until I right-clicked the Harpoon3Client.exe did Properties, headed to the Compability tab and chose "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 2000". I did try XP SP3 mode and a few others, Windows 2000 was the first one that worked reliably, I don't claim it is the only one.

Contact me with issues or if the server needs to be reset.
If it seems the server has crashed (disconnected, no response, etc.) give it 5 minutes and try again. I've added some scripting that will restart the MP server after most errors (it also sends me the log and a screenshot, yippee).

I'll flesh out more detailed best practices over the next few weeks.
Sincerely,
Tony Eischens

Thank you very much! Not enough that you´re one of the main Harpoon Classic Pillars - you do tons of work for H3 ANW, too.

My deepest respect,
Ralf

Thanks Tony for making available a server.

I fully accept that the other thread (the Herman-bashing thread), is not the place to report issues.

However I would appreciate to know how to connect to the server and start a session, as the way I tried yesterday lead to a crash and could be construed as deliberately crashing the server.

Has anyone succeeded in playing an MP game in the new 310 server?

Ok, was curious and tried to connect to the server. Login seemed to work, but I was uanble to create a session. Endless waiting, then mouse freeze in Harpoon - the end.

There are definitely problems with 3.10 MP.

Any clue? Any workarounds?

I just made the first tweak past my initial setup to see if things will be more stable. The tweak is one we used extensively with 3.9.4, only using a single CPU core to the run the game server.

To help troubleshoot I would greatly appreciate if you post here right after you have a failure and please note the following:
1. What operating system are you using?
2. Are you using any compability mode settings on the Harpoon3Client.exe and what are they?
3. Are you using a multi-core machine?
4. Is you operating system 32-bits or 64-bits?

If you don't know some of the answers, don't worry, something is better than nothing. I'll match your posts up with the crash screenshots and logs and we'll work from there.

Thank you

Allrighty, I think that may have helped somewhat. I just played PASON 1 (thanks Ralf) with multiplayer and successfully saved and loaded the game from a new session, progress :).

Very unlike me I didn't even sink any whales!

I was going to ask you to try with Windows 2000 compatibility mode set for Harpoon3Client.exe but I noticed the server is unresponsive and I probably can't manually restart it for more than a week so I undid my post.

Is this server still up? Anyone willing to walk me through a set up?

The server is still up, I've had the best luck running Harpoon3Client.exe in Windows 2000 compatibility mode. Find yourself an opponent here on the forums, agree on a time, then give it a shot.

No luck getting on this server. However, I was able to get on Wolff's Server using version 3.9.4. Still haven't played a game yet.

During a recent move I disconnected the server and it seems it hasn't been missed at all.  Feel free to contact me should you have an opponent and a time lined up and we'll make something work.  Overall I've found 3.10 likes having a very stable connection so DSL worked, Cable worked, but adding wireless into the mix really made it difficult to establish a useable session.

Very much looking forward to the day a server is utilized by the players at large.

However, Tony has been looking at it, so don't abandon all hope for the future ... [8D]
