Random Weather or not...

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Random Weather or not...

Post by jzardos »

So in campaign 41-45 PBEM is it just me or does random weather favor the Soviet player? Seems like a mud turn in summer 41 could be very bad for axis. Trying to determine fair settings for a PBEM game.

If you are looking strictly at 41, then yes, a mud turn could hurt pretty bad. However, there can also be a snow turn as well in the middle of the blizzard (I think one of the AAR's mentioned that) and the Germans were able to lay some smack down on some unsuspecting Russians at least for a turn. After that, it is anyone's guess as to who "bad weather" favors more, etc.

To a certain extent, the random factor can sort of help the Axis to a point since it also does not allow the Russians the clarity of knowing several turns in advance as to when it will either be mud for real or winter/blizzard for that matter and not have that "Sunday punch" loaded up for the first turn of blizzard.

After trying it for the first time in one of my current PBEM games, I prefer the random weather now. Like Klydon said, a random mud turn can slow the Axis advance down quite a bit, but when the blizzard starts the Soviet player can't just take a sledgehammer to the entire front knowing that a snow turn can be thrown into the mix.
