Gun Ranges

I've increased the range of some British DP and AA guns to 41. When in game, I looking at a ship's weapons those guns show an * after their ranges, like this, 41,000*. What does this mean? Will the guns function or not?

DP guns are shown with an "*" to let you know its a DP gun.
