Operational flexibility - delay or hold at all costs

Post by Tarhunnas »

In the game all forces fight the same, they cannot be given orders to either delay or hold at all costs. It would be very interesting if there was a possibility that you could give units different orders, say delay, which aimed at maximising enemy losses and minimise own, normal and hold at all costs, which made holding ground a priority over minimising own losses.

Then there could be a mechanism that a corps or army or AG commander that used delay too often would be at risk to be dismissed and put in the freezer for a year or so when the dictator in charge got wind of his willingness to give up ground. There could even be "not a step back" orders that made hold orders mandatory for some turns, perhaps made dependent partly on locations being threatened and partly random.

Well, as much as I dislike the concept (because it would hurt my tactics), it would add an element of realism to the game. That applies to both sides however: the SU must spend the first 6 months not retreating and continually counterattacking. Otherwise the Germans should a) never move past the 54/72 line and just dig in to defend forever or b) clear a corridor for the SU to Berlin in '41 and end the misery.

TOAW anyone?
Agree intellectually but in practice if another layer of comlexity is added then:
we would have to move to parallel processing
the little of my non-WITE life left would be gone

Plan? What plan? Attack!!
