that´s the base where the Oscar fighter bombers were coming from... while we´re bombing all these bypassed airfields now and then, they usually get operational at some point which enables the enemy to fly surprise attacks which so far weren´t succesful but could become annoying when hitting a precious target... going to take another two months to have my smaller combat units prepped for all these bases in my line of advance (four or five targets) and then we´re finally going to take them out... after these bases got bypassed I´ve expected Rainer to use his transport aircraft to lift all his units out but he just kept them there...

lots of dispersed strikes, just asking to run into a disaster with hundreds of Japanese fighters on the Philipines... it amazes me that Rainer puts a Topsy unit onto an airfield without any fighter cover as he could have also put them into Manila on his level 9 airfield... we take the chance and destroy one and a halve dozen transports on the ground...

great, one unit was still on deliberate attack... [8|] how that works is beyond me as all other units were stood down and I usually just click on order "all units to defend" and not all units separately, especially not with such a stack... oh well, no biggy...

these are the P-47 from Brunei again... [8|] they just shouldn´t do that and I can´t stand them down or reduce their range as I want them to escort my naval bombers if the enemy dares to close in on the base... and as there´s no option to "escort naval strike" I have to live with the strike routine as it is... and I don´t think it is well done but I guess I don´t have to point that out... Aichi Ha-60 hits 110

ordered the 200 B-29 at Changsha to attack the Aichi plant at Matsuyama, a hex without it´s own fighter cover but there were quite some fighters leaking into the hex, damaging a hell a lot of my B-29 and taking down a couple of them right over the target... the first wave already completely takes out the engine factory and the enemy loses 2/3 of the total Aichi Ha-60 factories... if not enough in the pools the enemy has to repair that one to build more Judies...

that´s how it works... you´ve got Cap that increases in numbers against later waves and you´ve got waves that just look completely silly to start with... the result is that my B-29 get shred today... the mission was a success in that the target was hit hard but at what cost... [8|] thanks for a silly strike routine... even if we would have a more detailed phase instead of a "morning" and "afternoon" phase, having strikes in bits and pieces of < squadron size all the time against Cap is nothing but a pain in the arse...

and more of the same, it really pisses me off, what a piece of crap design... if someone really think that´s how airstrikes looked like then he may well turn around and read a book on the matter... while having still a game that got "morning" and "afternoon" PHASES, the strikes are so stupidly modelled that they end up being smaller than a combat box which therfore suffer accordingly then... when looking at the losses and the replacements, every Japanese player must cheer to engage enemy heavy bombers during long range missions as even leaking Cap of three dozen fighters (mostly not to be known as bomber killers) manage to down a full monthly replacement of B-29... and we´re talking about leaking Cap here, not a heavily defended target...

combat box:

It consisted of as many as 21 planes (3 squadrons of 7 planes) staggered vertically and horizontally in such a way that the bombers' guns provided maximum firepower all around, and especially against head - on attacks. On large raids, three of these boxes were formed into a combat wing, with one box in the lead and the others stacked 1,000 feet above and below it. Designed to increase bombing accuracy, LeMay placed his most proficient crews in the lead planes of the combat box. All the planes in the box dropped their bombs simultaneously-but only on cue of the lead crew. The result, at least in theory, was a closely packed pattern of hits on the target.

so why not going with combat boxes with the biggest single wave being a combat wing? No, better do it with strange numbers of numbers in each wave, staring with a huge one, followed by lots of mini waves...

the design as it is is silly, period... the idea to model Cap differently was great, it also turned out to be well done IMO... the idea to model strikes differently was also great, it turned out to be badly modeled though because having one big wave followed by a myriad of mini waves is just silly as these mini waves drop out of the sky like flies... if you try to model more waves in comparison to the "one WITP wave" then make it more realistically, not 100/12/9/10/8/12/10...

as it is now, you end up losing a full monthly replacement of B-29 against three dozen enemy fighters from leaking Cap... [:(] doesn´t make sense to me... even worse for the Japanese as they would send 2E zippos...

you just gotta love it... 16 B-29 lost today, 18 per month as replacements... looks like strategic day light bombing is hardly possible, not even against hexes without a single fighter based there... with losses inflicted like this our bombing offensive quickly comes to a halt, even worse than the aircraft losses are the losses of the high exp/skill crews that have been flying B-24 for over two years already, with exp in the high 60, low 70 and skills above 80... these are pilots that spent 3 months in on map training squadrons, followed by more than 2 years of combat missions, many of these pilots got hundreds of missions... we´ve just lost a dozen of these crews...

to me, the flaws in air combat pretty much start with the coordination routine(s), no matter if escort/sweep failures in the dozen every turn, sweeps in general that usually send 2/3 of a squadron alone against ten times more enemy fighters on Cap or the bomber strikes (with or without escorts) that are nothing but daily screw ups... every turn is nothing but a series of screwed up air strikes if you look at it, day after day, from the beginning until the end of the war, while daily getting more ridicoulos with more and more aircraft available... if you add in dive massacres in fighter vs fighter (just think about escort) then all is going to be worse... how flawed it is might not come up in 12/41 when you´ve got two squadrons attacking, but in 7/44 when you´ve got two dozen squadrons attacking it might look different, something you can see here every couple of turns... and I´m not even using these 7 ac squadrons the B-29 arrived in, I´ve downgraded these which are now used as training squadrons and used other 12 and 16 ac units for the B-29 but that doesn´t matter anyway it seems...

one huge wave followed by lots of mini waves, mhm, well working...

Loved that quote I´ve just read:

To civilian observers on the ground, masses of World War II bombers flying at high altitude were an awesome site, yet they appeared to be clustered or scattered in random fashion. Any US Army Air Force veteran will tell you that the disorganized appearance was an illusion, far from the reality. The bombers flew in fixed positions within complex formations, and the Air Force was deadly serious about training and perfect formation flying.

lol, in AE, formation flying isn´t existing, not even a squadron of fighters can fly in formation. "Disorganized appearance" that´s what AE is, unfortunately the strikes not only appear to be disorganized.

Southwest Pacific (6-plane diamond formation, 9-plane formation V of Vs; Javelin Down)

These basic bombardment squadron formations utilized by the Fifth, and Thirteenth Air Forces were defensively successful against as many as fifty enemy fighters in a frontal attack without sustaining an aircraft loss. It was primarily used for bombing attacks. When no interception was anticipated, the route to the target was flown in Javelin up, a formation permitting quick closing to the defensive diamond. Group formation consisted of squadrons echeloned right or left with 500 to 1000 feet differences of altitude between squadrons.

Pacific (3-3-3-4 Box)

The B-29s of the Twentieth Air Force basically flew a box formation created by General Curtis LeMay, who was the Commanding General during most of its missions from the Mariannas. Normally about 30-32 planes made up the 3-3-3-4 arrangement, the last element having a "tail-end Charlie" in the slot position, the position directly behind and lower than the element lead.

Central Pacific (6-plane diamond formation, 9-plane formation V of Vs, Javelin Down)

The B-24s and B-25s of the Seventh Air Force fought in the campaign for the Marshall Islands, with its primary objective to neutralize Japanese fighter opposition. They flew long-range missions to strike enemy air bases and vital centers in the enemy's communications lines.

Burma, India (Javelin Down)

The Tenth Air Force very successfully employed the Javelin Down formation in its bombing campaign to cripple Japanese transportation in Burma. En route to the target, four squadrons combined in a group from formation for mutual protection. The ships formed a flat diamond pattern, wider than its depth.

China, Burma (Group defensive formation)

The heavy bomber groups of the Fourteenth Air Force utilized standard formations in this theater with the exception that each squadron consisted of seven instead of six aircraft. Assembly approach., and retirement were accomplished in group stagger formation. The standard group defensive formation, which was also used for the bombing of area targets, was a modification of the group stagger.

Alaska (9-plane formation V of Vs)

The Eleventh Air Force determined that a formation of nine aircraft provided a sufficient defense in this theater. The normal formation consisted of a "V" of "V's" with the wingmen of each flight being forward nearly in line with and slightly below their respective flight leaders. If fighters were present, the defensive formation was held for the bombing run. In the case of no fighter opposition, bombing attacks were made by flights or individual aircraft, with the defensive formation reformed immediately after the bombing run.

Africa, Mediterranean, Italy (Stagger Down, 9plane formation V of Vs)

The Ninth Air Force was begun in Cairo in mid-1942 with a single squadron of B-17s, augmented later by B-24s, P-40s, and B-25s. The Twelfth Air Force, formed in the UK from elements of the Eighth Air Force, began arriving in North Africa in November 1942. The mission in the Middle East at that time was purely tactical - destroy the enemy air force and support the British Eighth Army. The Italian Air Force was hardly equal to the challenge and simple formations worked satisfactorily for these objectives. Their use was continued in mid 1943 when the bombers supported the invasion of Sicily. The primary role of the Twelfth Air Force, initially, was to operate with and assist the Ground Forces in their penetration of Axis Europe. Support of advancing troops continued through 1944 with tactical sorties against rail yards, troop concentrations, highways, bridges, ports, and supply centers to deny the enemy his supplies and mobility.

France, Belgium, Netherlands - Tactical (Stagger Down, 9-plane farmation V of Vs, Javelin Down)

The Ninth Air Force's tactical expertise was needed to soften up German defenses for the coming Normandy invasion, and so was transferred to the UK in October 1943. All medium bomber groups serving in the Eighth Air Force at that time flew their last missions with the Eighth and joined the Ninth. During the summer and fall of 1943, the medium and light bomber groups focused on cratering the hundreds of Luftwaffe airfields throughout France, Belgium and Holland. Between December 1943 and the spring of 1944, the medium bombers were also engaged in Operation CROSSBOW, the effort to destroy flying bomb sites along the Normandy and Calais coasts. The light bomber groups continued their assaults on airfields, rail yards, bridges, roads, and communications lines.

Germany And German Occupied Countries - Strategic (ETO Combat Box)

When the first heavy bomb groups of the Eighth Air Force began operations in the European Theater, the 12-ship formations known as the Javelin Down and the Stagger Down were employed. The more missions the Eighth flew, however, the better prepared German fighters became to exploit the vulnerabilities of these basic formations. They were too long and narrow; fighters could approach either end without much exposure to firepower from the bombers. Individual ships or elements in the rear of the formation had difficulty keeping up. Elements broke formation to bomb leaving the ships even more vulnerable to fighter attack.

Air Force Command determined that these standard training formations were unsuitable for the heavy bombers in the ETO, where the bombers were encountering the heaviest opposition, flying the best equipment, and employing the most effective tactics. Something had to change.

The challenge was to devise a formation which had firepower in all directions, left no loose ends open to concentrated attack, and which provided a good compact bombing pattern. Further complicating the design of this new formation were the needs to make it flexible, maneuverable, and easy to fly while each ship maintained its position.

It was a very difficult challenge. One can almost imagine groups of generals and colonels huddled around a chalk board pitching ideas and arguing, much like a coaching staff working out the Xs and Os of a new gridiron formation. After extensive trial and error, the Group Stagger formation was modified into the Combat Box. The high and low squadrons were moved forward to line up with one another and separated vertically by an additional fifty feet. The Combat Box formation corrected the offensive and defensive inadequacies of the formations initially used by the Eighth. It became the standard heavy bomber formation in the ETO for the Eighth, and Fifteen Air Forces.

Granted, that´s from the ETO but the principle must have well be known at the other side of the globe too I guess:

Three heavy Bomb Groups of one Combat Wing take off from neighboring airfields and assemble into formations separately, orbiting counter-clockwise around a fixed position.

The "Buncher", a low frequency radio beacon with a 25 mile broadcast range, transmits a unique Morse call-sign and long-keyed pulse once per minute for the ships to home in on. Once each Group assembles they join together in a single formation at a higher altitude, still circling on the Buncher signal.

When this process is completed, the Wing rendezvous and assembles with other Combat Wings in its Division at the "Splasher," a medium frequency radio beacon which broadcasts more vertically than the Buncher. Splashers have four transmitters broadcasting simultaneously at different frequencies but pulsing the same call-sign. Homing on the Splasher, the Wings create a mega-formation composed of as many as 400 ships before departing England to bomb targets.

now go ahead and try to form an attack of three US fighter squadrons from a level 9 airfield in the game... I like the term "mega formation"... [:D]

the defender gets the av multiplied by four... funny, considering disruption, no supply and being kicked out of the base some time ago...

using Marine dive bombers for ground support now as they´re never going to be close to enemy shipping anyway... got hundreds of 70 skilled Marine pilots in the pool and hundreds of SBD with 70 nav skill on the map but the enemy never got into range with a convoy worth mentioning and he probably won´t ever do that...

some of the bombers changed target to Lucena on their own... probably means one of the LCU from Naga moved on the railroad to Lucena and the bombers target "followed" the unit... this could well lead into a disaster...

give the enemy a hundred fighters in this hex and watch two dozen B-24 being shot down... the biggest advantage of the Japanese at this stage is the strike routine of AE as it means screwed up missions in 99% of the time... and usually it´s the Allied on the offense now with the Japanese being on the defense...

a daitai of Jacks at the base but the cruisers don´t cause much damage tonight... these bombardments are more a demonstration of strenght in the area than an attempt to really do a lot of damage... but I doubt the enemy is going to send in surface assets anyway...

invasion force reached Singkawang, our convoys are covered by the full might of Allied carrier groups... don´t expect the enemy to do anything against this invasion... Singers and Palembang together got something like a hundred fighters plus a couple of bombers but nothing I would call a threat... the airfields aroudn Singkawang are all knocked out and are only held by a very small Japanase garisson, probably only equipment left that couldn´t be evacuated by airlift...

10 troops of a AIF Cmbt Eng 43 accidentally lost during unload of 30th Australian Bde
10 Support troops lost overboard during unload of 22nd Marine Rgt /4

fully prepped, the invasion is going to be a cakewalk... some 700 av are going to land here, units in regimental and brigade strength, some will go South, the rest will head East to take Kuching... got a big convoy with support troops following and Singkawang is going to be built up to level 9 (expected duration three to four weeks), then we are planning to start the liberation of the Malayan peninsula... probably landing at Mersing (or somewhere else in this area, depending on which base is empty and can be taken by para assault), then we´re going to follow with 2500 av plus support in the first wave... that should be easily enough already to take Singapore (only 15000 troops reported there - probably not more than 200 av)... the rest of the peninsula seems to be empty... I see this as a secondary front anyway and it only diverts my assets to take Luzon...

the enemy keeps using a lot of his transports, either to supply bases or evacuate cut off troops (I guess the latter)... and air transport stays far more dangerous than actual combat missions in AE... I would think that is something to be looked at too but I guess it´s seen as ok...

the enemy already lost probably more Emily transports to ops than were even built in real life, same goes for the Allied side, if I would use halve of my C-47 force every second or third day, I would lose more than what I receive... these missions take two or three times too many op losses...

even a deliberate attack would have done the trick here... now that we took Singkawang we´re directly threatening Singapore and Palembang... guess that´s it for any ships going to Palembang as soon as the airfield increases another two or three levels... as soon as we´ve got it to level 9 we´re going to start the assault on the Malayan coast...

our fighters do very well though... not that this would mean we could directly attack any of the major airfields in this area as radar and being outnumbered in every sweep would cost us too many fighters and pilots...

the only aircraft that are dropping 1000lb bombs in this game are my dive bombers that carry these bombs by default... unfortunately the responsible people still fail to see (better say accept) that not changing the experience needs for bigger bombs is nothing but another brain fart... why? Because overal experience levels dropped by 20 points from WITP to AE, yet the 70 exp need for alternative bomb loads remained the same... if someone tells me this routine was taken out then I may well accept it (even if I wouldn´t understand the reason as it is perfectly clear that Allied bombers carried also bigger bombs than 500lb quite a lot) but just ignoring the need to change the exp need by at least 10 points is yet another time when these people either can´t get over their egos or fail to see that changing A also requires a change to B as it´s directly related...

then you see people posting their results from PBEM that went straight through 45 stating they haven´t seen their bombers dropping 1000lb (or even bigger bombs) for a single time, if the bombers didn´t have the bombs by default... lol, some things are really beyond any sense of logical behaviour...

so I call this as working better in WITP and a step back in the evolvement to AE, while being told the routine for alternative loadouts is still there... but without editing the overal exp levels via modding a scenario you are never going to see that routine in action...

well, must be just me again... [8|]

back to back attack and the enemy took quite some losses today... would be good to see a banzai charge soon... my Inf divisions here are going to need at least two months to recover from the fights here... doesn´t matter much as they need 100 days to prepare for their next target anyway so as soon as they reach 100 prep they´re also going to be fully combat ready again...

even the enemy AMc are leaving the area around Cam Ranh Bay now... does that mean the enemy is giving up on the area? I really wonder how this front is going to turn out in a couple of months when we´ve deliberated Malaya and the enemy still posessing Thailand and most of Vietnam... there are still quite substantial numbers of enemy troops but I can´t see them being evacuated other than using air transport but bringing out a couple of hundred thousand of men seems a bit optimistic to me and it would mean leaving all heavy weapons behind too... perhaps the enemy is going to stand and fight until the end but I´m not really interested in diverting lots of assets into the area as I just can´t see a reason to do so other than clearing the backyard and that´s accomplished already when we take back Malaya as it completely isolates Sumatra and Java as there´s nothing going to slip through the strait between Borneo and Malaya...

expected enemy LRCAP at some point but didn´t really fear it and enemy numbers prove not to be sufficient to really harm our strikes... we nearly trade losses on a 1:1 basis in the end with 4 P-38 and 4 B-24 being lost though and that´s not really worth it when you do such A2G strikes... even though this strike was quite devastating for the enemy units at Naga...

first base next to Singkawang falls without a fight to our troops... quick turn and also the AAR is slowly catching up with the game again, now being three weeks ahead of the AAR... as soon as we´re at two weeks again I can go back to usual update speed as I don´t want to completely catch up due to intel an AAR can give and the experiences here on the forum... not that I would think my opponent would look at the AAR or that I would have any suspecion of being cheated, just to point that out...
