I don't know Eddy, I want to play with friends, not a stranger whose ad I see at the hobby shop. You have to worry about compatability, do I want a stranger over my house? I guess, over time, we would become friends, but it could be very akward. What I say is: I wish more of my friends would play board wargames.

All your friends started out as complete strangers at some point in time.

And what's the difference with joining a sports club ? When you go there for the first time you don't know anyone. You're taking a chance that it'll work out in the end, but you are never sure. Been there, done that.

The same applies to wargames - you have to actively go looking for people to play with. Ok, example time : in the past 5 years 2 English ex-patriats working in our country have joined our tabletop group. Their job brought them to an area where they didn't know anyone and what they both did was search online for a wargame group and send us a mail, not sit on their lower behind and wait for a wargame opponent to magically appear.

Another factor of boardgames is time.

Granted - but often that's a matter of choice and priorities too. I rarely watch tv - that was a conscious decision which suddenly freed up hours and hours each week.

I'd wait until after retirement to play *that* game [;)]

We are all entitled to our opinions wants and needs in how we wish to pursue this fascinating hobby.

I didn't mean to offend and sure, some people really are stuck with little options but I get kinda annoyed with people who do have options, yet still prefer to complain about not having FTF opponents.

Ever looked for (war)gamers in your zip code in the BGG user database ?
Ever left a "wargamer wanted" note on the message board of your friendly local gaming store ?
Ever went to Vul-con in Phoenix ? - http://www.vul-con.com/ - and try to find people interested in wargaming ?
Ever checked *here* if there are wargamers from your general area ?

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with prefering pc wargaming and it sure keeps Matrix in business but most who claim not to find FTF opponents never really look very hard. Or object to driving an hour or so to get to one. Or want to play wargames only at 02:00 AM.

Here in Buffalo there is a wargaming group that meets in a bar...A win-win situation if you ask me...

In most clubs you don't have to buy & paint miniatures yourself, they'll be more than happy if you show up on time, know the rules but don't be a rules lawyer and be relaxed about winning or losing.

Played minis almost every week for over a decade before the painting bug caught me as well.

The wife and I canceled our cable TV last summer and both of us always talk about how free we feel without being tied down to the "boob tube." There is no way in Hell I want cable TV again. It was like I was a slave to it. Good riddance.

Being a major movie freak, I sub to Blockbuster Video and they send me dvds in the mail to watch. I choose the one I want online, take it out of the mailbox, and mail it back in a postage free envelope. No commercials, no editing for content. The classic "Damn the Defiant" came in yesterday. I've never seen it, gonna watch it this weekend.
