I don't know how to use paratroopers just yet, but I wonder if that is an option to cut a railway. On the turn before I complete my encirclement, execute some sort of airborne assault.

But I'd hate to drop a division in to cut a railway and then have them get sent to Valhalla.

You can bomb rail capacity in cities, but not the rail itself. Rail is only broken by control change and partisans.

Just curious....are you using panzers or infantry to create your breakthroughs? One common noob mistake I see (and have done) is to use my panzers to make holes in the enemy's lines. This is wrong. You want infantry for that. Then panzers move through to create pockets.

I've been in only one campaign game so far and have achieved three or four smallish encirclements of 5ish to 10ish enemy units. I executed one moderately large encirclement of about 30 to 40 units.

But the one I'm ticked about, that I missed, was near Kiev and would have resulted in several dozen enemy units being surrounded.

But they nearly all escaped right before I closed the perimeter. Only a single railway line remained open. And because fo the distance moved, some must have escaped using that railway.

I'm sure there remain TONS of things I can do to improve gameplay. I don't even know all the stuff I can do just yet.

I take the time and try to learn one new important thing every turn. I get an added benefit from learning other things while I search for the one thing that is my goal for that turn.

If your attempt was against the AI, it is notorious for being able to 'warp' units away....or to needed areas. A human would be forced to use rail..and if it was in your ZOC, he couldn't. The AI is under no such restriction.

The user interface is not perfect

I appreciate you taking the time to help me. It may not always sound like it, but I do. Sometimes I post things up really fast and I don't always take enough care to make it sound like I appreciate your effort.

But...anyone that genuinely uses their time in an effort to help me with a problem...well...that person has my eternal gratitude.

Playing the AI will teach one to make the encirclement quick and complete.  While it may not break an encirclement like a human, it will sneak out of a "nearly closed" one faster than butter dripping off a hot biscuit.

Part of the learning comes in finding how to properly use HQ build-up, air supply, or even a turn of rest so that the mobile corps will have the movement to get the job done.

The key point being that it's all about maintaining and maximizing panzer mobility for the Axis. Period.

After you bomb a city check the target for a % of damage to what you were aiming at. Compare it to what it was before you bombed it.
