Vettim had been sweeping Chungking every turn with A6M2s and the AVG pilots on CAP were getting the worst of it. Two turns ago, I staged in 2 squadrons of "armored buzzsaws"....Hurricanes.....and they have shot down 9 A6M2s at a cost of 3 Hurricanes.



SWPAC/SOPAC


Japan captures Tabiteuea.

CV Kaga is spotted near Truk.

Three IJN TFs appear in the Bismarck Sea as Vettim is finally making a push for Rabaul and the SWPAC.

SOPAC had built up its HQ at Noumea into a level 4AF/3 port. Over 3 divisions, several construction and aviation engineers and 5 squadrons of AC have been landed on New caledonia. Koumac, on the northern tip, has also been reinforced and is building up its airstrips and defenses.

With the new Japanese threat to Rabaul.....2 regiments are diverted from Noumea and are sent to Port Moresby.

nicwb......thanx for your comments. Three day turns certainly speed up the game(50% increase compared to 2 day turns) and I think that they give WitP a better operational feel. You cant micromanage all your ships and AC on a daily basis and you have to give more general orders that can be effective over a 3 day period. The only bad thing is that 3 day turns allow you to play "gotcha" with your opponent....you can do a 3 day run in with your carriers to surprise your opponent.....or you can mass your air forces and create a 3 day mismatch where you can destroy your opponents air force in an area before he can react....Vettim and I have both repeatedly tried to create aerial mismatches against each other.

While Chinese troops were able to crack the encirclement and reinforce Sinyang......Japanese troops have cut the road to Chengchow and Sinyang is dangerously low on supplies.

A Chinese Army of 2500 AV has marched in from Nanyang and will attempt to reopen the Chengchow highway while another Chinese 3700 AV in Ichang will shock attack its way across the river into the forest E of Ichang to help oepn a supply route into Sinyang.

The Chinese troops in Sinyang can now trace a supply line both to Ichang and Chengchow.....over 10,000 supplies flow into Sinyang immediately and the supply crisis of a week ago is now over.

SWPAC


Japanese troops storm ashore at Milne Bay. KB covers the landings at Milne Bay and continues to work over the port and airstrips at Port Moresby. In about a week vettim has overrun all of the Bismarcks/Admiralties/northern coast and eastern tip of New Guinea and has begun landings in the Solomons.

Im glad that I was able to reinforce Port Moresby with the US Army 138th regiment before KB arrived......with jungle terrain and lvl 3 fortifications it will take at least 2 to 2/12 IJA divisions for Japan to take Port Moresby from me. With apparently all 6 CVs off New Guinea Japan does indeed control the seas of NE Australia.....but fortunately we control the land and the railroads of NE Australia. I am sending construction engineers, the RN BF extricated from Kuching and the 2 RAF Air HQs......223rd and 224th.......extricated from Malaya by railroad from Perth and Sydney to Cairns and Cooktown. The airfields oin NE OZ are currently being enlarged and the RAF Air HQs will give me torpedo capabilities off Port Moresby. If things get serious around Port Moresby I will stage in the A-24 DBs and the RAF torpedo bombers from Java.



SOPAC


Japan captures Tulagi.

With apparently all 6 IJN CVs off New Guinea I will not commit Sara/Lex/Yorktown/Enterprise to battle.....some of the carriers have their VF squadrons still flying F-3A Buffaloes. Instead, the USN CVs will withdraw from the south Pacific and complete their 3/42 and 4/42 AA and radar upgrades.....hopefully by then all the VF squadrons will be flying F4F-3s and F4F-4s and the SBDs will be upgraded to the latest variant.

While vettim could use KB to cover an amphibious assault at Port Moresby.....I dont think that he has the 2 1/2 divisions available now to overwhelm Port Moresby's defenses. He is bogged down in Luzon with the 16th and 48th Divisions and the 65th Brigade; the 4th, 33rd and 38th Divisions are at Palembang and the 5th, 56th and Imperial Guards are bogged down outside Singapore.

Im not worried about holding festung New Caledonia...Ive got nearly 3 divisions there plus 100 AC and over 100,000 supplies at the 5 AF and 5 port at Noumea. Koumac is now a lvl 2 AF and is entrenching and Im dropping off construction engineers at Efate and Luganville next turn so I can build 4 or 5 mutually supporting airfields. Ive been a bit lax in sending air groups out of the US to reinforce the various war theatres.....their experience is generally low so Ive been training most air groups on the US west coast. Next turn I will be shipping out 18 AC squadrons from the US to reinforce Australia/New Caeldonia/Port Moresby.

The Dutch troops defending Palembang held out for quite some time against overwhelming forces. Even in defeat, the Dutch troops have bloodied the IJA 4th and 33rd Divisions and they will need some recovery time before they can assault Java.

With Vettim reinforcing both Oostahaven and Palembang, I staged over the 39 A-24s that had been training in OZ since their arrival in 1/42. The A-24s start with an experience and naval bombing skill in the 20's and Ive trained then to experience in the 50's and naval bombing skill in the 60's. They are scheduled to withdraw on 3/15/42 and I staged them to Java to use them before Id lose them. By the time they staged to Batavia, the A-24s missed mini KB by 2 turns and the amphibious landings at Palembang by 1 turn. One of the problems with 3 day turns is that it slows down your reaction times.....especially in staging AC. This aspect of 3 day turns should help the Allies though later when they go on the counteroffensive in July/Aug. 1942.

I may pay PPs to keep the A-24s around for a few more turns. BB Hyuga was torpedoed off the Celebes a couple of turns ago and last turn BB Nagato was spotted by a USN sub off the Celebes.....we may see some action in the Java Sea very soon. If not.....then I will probably stage the A-24s and the RAF TBs to NE Oz to help support Port Moresby.

The Allied ships in port at Rangoon are no longer able to unload supplies so they cast off and head for Calcutta. I think that I was able to unload some 200,000-250,000 supplies at Rangoon before the port became damaged......and this has contributed greatly to Allied defenses in China.....over 50% of Chinese corps are taking on replacements due to the abundant supplies.

I have to give Vettim credit......he is playing Japan like an AFB and is successful...ie very methodical and brings overwhelmimg airpower to bear wherever he is attacking. Vettim has me cornered in Clark and out of supply due to his use of airpower.....and I have far superior numbers of troops on Luzon as the Allies.

My 39 A-24 DBs had been scheduled for withdrawal on 3/15/42. After training them up for several months, I wanted to use them before withdrawing them so Ive paid the PPs to keep them around a little longer. With Japan landing at so many beaches simultaneously in the DEI and mini KB standing by off Ambon to cover the assault there........the A-24s are staged into Ambon with 25 P-40Es as escorts.....this area looks to be a target rich environment and I will get 1-2 turns of use out of the Army DBs before they are withdrawn.

The A-24s are shot up pretty well after attacking mini KB...10 A-24s were lost to AA in the attack on mini KB.......so they are withdrawn on the 4/1/42 turn.



Japanese troops capture Boela, Babo and Namlea but are repulsed at Ambon.


On Sumatra, the 38th Division recaptures Benkolen and retreats the Dutch Army remnants deep into the jungle.



Vettim had been massing invasion shipping at Oosthaven.....loading 4th and 33rd Divsions for the invasion of Java.



Virtually the entire British and Dutch fleets and the USN Asiatic fleet had been massed in the Indian Ocean south of Java....refueled by AOs for several weeks.....waiting for a chance to hit IJN forces when they assaulted Java. With IJN transports massing at Oosthaven and most of the Japanese air force also concentrated at Oosthaven.....over 200 AC......a RN SAG with 4 old RN BBs and several CLs was sent to destroy the transports and bombard Oosthaven airfield. A RN Air Combat TF centered around CV Illustrious, CVL Hermes, BB PoW and BC Replse was sent to cover the SAG.

On the first day of the 3 day turn....3/29.....Val DBs suddenly appeared over Soerabaja as apparently KB arrived on scene and entered the Java Sea from the south:

The Allies lose BB Ramillies, BB Revenge, BB Royal Sovereign, BB Resolution, CL Sumatra, CL Dragon and CL Durban. CL Capetown is severely damaged and will probably not make it back to port.



As big a disaster as this was........it could have been worse.......much worse.

Fortunately, the Air Combat TF escaped annihilation and should make it back to port barring some unforseen sub attack. BB PoW and BC Repulse were unscathed. The Dutch fleet and the USN Asiatic fleets were sent to raid IJN amphibious TFs in the eastern DEI and were out of range of KB. After this debacle, the Dutch and US Asiatic fleets will be returned to port and not committed to surafce ambushes as long as Japan has such complete control of the air.

Vettim landed the 4th and 33rd Divisions at Kalidjati.

On the next turn, I massed the RN TBs and all the PBYs and DO search planes at Batavia and sent them after KB...escorted by over 70 P-40Es and P-40Bs. The Allies score no hits and lose 87 AC in A2A combat...47 P-40Es are shot down against a mere 12 A6M2s.

The Allies' ground forces are in pretty good shape on Java...it will take at least 4 or more divisions to overwhelm the Dutch....Ive got 1500 AV behind level 4 forts at Batavia. However...with KB around the Japanese have total control of the air. Im going to send the British TB squadrons back to India while the US P-40E and P-40B squadrons will be sent back to Australia to rebuild.

The Dutch are now on their own.

Heavily damaged CV Indomitable and CVE Hewrmes make it safely out of harm's way and should reach port next turn.

CL Capetown is still afloat....with 84 FLT damage....and is slowly crawling back to Australia.

Two IJA divisions are ashore at Kalidjati....the 33rd and 4th Divisions. I put about 10 subs on patrol off Kalidjati and its forced Vettim to withdraw his carrier, surface combat and amphibious TFs back to safer environs.

Vettim bombards Ambon with 2 BB TFs and reinforces with another SNLF LCU but I dont think that is enough force for him to capture Ambon.

When both KB and mini KB are away the mice will play. Ive reinforced Port Moresby with the 159th Motorized Regiment and Port Moresby now has over 400 AV behind lvl4 forts in 2x terrain.
