Adding new flag icons

Post by Shark7 »

Anyone know how to go about doing it? I'd like to make my own flag symbols to use in game, but have zero knowledge of how to go from the image editor to the game.

Actually I don't think you can use other symbols or colors than the ones already in the game, only arrange them differently at game start. The editor can't do nothing here iirc.

I took a look for the flags and all I found was flagshapes pictures

They were black backgrounds of various sizes

I guess the flags are in a unmoddable file somewhere

Please correct me if I am wrong

The flag shapes are in images/ui/flagshapes and they are Windows Metafile format (.wmf). This format is a very old vector based graphics format and you need a vector editor to make them. It has been years since I've used them but I used to use Adobe Illustrator to make them. I'm guessing Corel Draw could also be used. There is a free vector graphics program called Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org) that says that they can export in this format. All you are defining with these files is shapes. The colours are then applied to them later.

That is actually a good thing to hear, since I use PSP 8 and it does save in .wmf format. I realize I can't make 'new' flags, but I can replace one of the existing ones to get what I want. Since these are black and white, this sounds like a simple transparancy map that allows the chosen secondary color appear in only the white areas. I understand it, just wasn't sure exactly how to go about it.

I'll give this a try later this evening.

TotalVectorize has a free trial period that apparently does a very good job.

I used a trial version of metafile companion to create mine, but it was alot of work, had to draw all manually, no cut and paste.
