What to disband and form as the Germans?

Post by Klydon »

I have seen several posts about recommendations for disbanding certain Soviet units (motorcycles, etc), but have not seen anything for the Germans where I would assume there is the potential for benefit since they are under ToE issues right away. Just wondering if there are any opinions out there.

Also, what are some good units (if any) for the Germans to form?

The only German units that I disband are the very late-war marginal divisons - they arrive as shells, and are just a waste of resources when other units at the front need replacements. I don't disband the German support units - they are an integral part of the game system, and allow you to strengthen parts of your line that need support for an assault, or need to be defended. And yes, these units are force-multipliers.

Disbanding the late war shells is a good idea unless, through some miracle, you get to that part of the war in good shape, in which case I'd be inclined to keep the mobile units.

I'm intending to disband some Axis units in the upcoming PBEM with notenome, but I'm not yet entirely sure what I'll disband.

Also: the Axis can't form new units, they can create customized divisions through support unit attachments, though.

What about german Support units like eg 702 SP Inf Gun Comp; in my current game it only has 2 guns with none in the pool; surely this is an overhead....

Unless I am missing something, I have not found a good use for the security division HQ units, so I disband them and let the divisions themselves be directly attached to OKH.

I have done this as well for two of the HQ's thus far... Will likely do it for all... There is like 10k plus men in those German HQ's to start[:-]

And disbanding the RHG headquarters releases the support units. Since I usually know where I want the support (pioneers from the northern RHG; artillery from the southern RHG) to go -- which is into 2nd Army or 18th Army, I move them up close and move the support units then disband them the following turn.

I wouldn't disband the Inf Gun units; you get replacements later, and you want space available to deploy the replacements. They use hardly any Manpower anyway.

If the Germans have a Manpower Shortage, you have to look very carefully at disbanding the following (in order:):

1. RHQ HQs
2. Army Airbase Units
3. LW Airbase Units and HQs (by consolidating air units to fewer airbase units)
4. SP Flak Cos, not for manpower, but to re-deploy those Flak into the TOE of units. Plus, you don't really want to use an attachment on one of these low combat value units anyway.

In 1941, I would probably ONLY disband the RHQ HQs

And later in the war, when you are being pushed out of Russia:

1. Security Divisions
2. FBD Units
3. 1945 "Shell" units
4. Anything else you clearly don't have replacements for

You might also consider, if Armament Points are dear, disbanding some of the Artillery Battalions that have 150mm or 105mm guns that are in the TOE of Infantry Divisions. That will give a quick shot in the arm for Infantry Divisions, and lessen the future builds you need. Hard to reduce artillery though.

The Light Flak units (non-88mm equipped) are also good candidates in an Armament crunch.

Also, don't forget the ROMANIANS! They have Manpower issues as well, and love them or hate them, you need these guys to carry some of the load. For Romanians, I would look at, in order:

1. Airbase Units: You get WAY more than you really need.
2. Army Group Antonescu HQ: 20,000 typists. I would rather attach to OKH than this crappily led HQ

I haven't looked in Detail, but I think the HUNGARIANS could also cough-up an airbase or two if you need more manpower

The FINNS could really use a cheap source of Manpower, but I can't find any; the Airbases are maxed out already. Maybe a few of the MG or Infantry Battalions, but that won't do much. They have a real replacement problem.

Excellent; thanks for the advice. I have already started to disband some of the Romanian units as their pool seems to be continuously empty.

Now I have a principle that it is better to have 1 unit clost to 100% TOE than 2 on 50%, even if it is only for easier game managment. Now the Finns have many air units with low numbers of aircraft, so I have disbanded some of these. Hopefully I can do this for an airbase too.

Question: For the Allies, how do i know what production will be supplied by Germany or italy for that mater; there is not much point in disbanding a unit only to find that the Germans have shipped eg 100 FWs the next turn; is there any way of knowing whats coming?

Cheers

and other than scrolling through the Re-inf/Withdrawl report, is there anyway of easily finding out if a support unit is scheduled for withdrawl?

The disband option will never appear on it's TOE screen.

This was requested some time ago, but has not been forthcoming, so all I can say is that it is "on the list"

many thanks for the quick reply; and being able to disband an air unit that is to be withdrawn is WAD?

Don't the RHG hq's dispatch the construction units to repair railways in the rear?

Just a digression here. You would think there would be a consequence at OKH if they are to directly administer Sec units without RHG HQ's to help out policing the entire Soviet occupied zone. Not sure of the Nazi politics but wouldn't OKH want to focus on more important things, like running a land war and the 'real' combat units as compared to supervising an occupation? I know the rules allow it and it is a needed trick to disband RHG's, but it comes across as gamey to me IMHO.

It is indeed gamey as in RL no doubt they were very necessary! However I did Vs the AI disband one RHG HQ and attached the units to another RHG HQ and then to OKH direct. I also reallocated all the SU's accordingly out of the RHG's... Somewhat of a compromise I guess, trim the fat[;)]

I did some re-thinking about this late last night, and my original thoughts may have been too hasty. In war, when things are collapsing and resources are thin, unit canibalization happened frequently. And if it were happening to me, I'd gladly eat my RHG's! [8|]

Also, EXCELLENT post above on what to disband/priority.
