VR Squadron replentishment

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-Allies, scen.9, v1108c, mid 3/43.

I have a VR TF at Ponape. It is at sea, cruise speed. It's been there for 3-4 game turns. The problem is the only planes it has onboard are some regular units I put on them to strenghten CAP.

Each unit is set to "replacements and upgrades on". They have received no replacement aircraft. I tried one turn placing ships in a replentishment TF- no joy.

I went to the Aircraft Replentishment screen for a look-see. I found that for F4F-3 and 4s, Dauntless and Avenger the Replacement rate was 0 and in one type production was at 21. There were a few planes in the pools.

1. What exactly do "replacement" and "production" rates mean? Is it per month, day or what?
2. As the Allied player I thought I had no control over production. Is that correct? If I do have some control, where can I read about it?
3. Is there a manual reference I should look at? Any other posts?

Suggestions and comments, please.

Thanks, Hugh Browne

I think you have some good questions. Apropos Allied Production, the manual p. 225 states: "When the Production System is on, the Allies are allowed certain on-map production of aircraft, supplies, and fuel along with having repair shipyards, but since most Allied material was going to Europe, and most production was off-map, most Allied material arrives through the Build Rate/Replacement System..."

For example, as the Allied player in a PBEM, Scenario One, I checked out every possible city that had aircraft factories, which were few, and the only thing I saw after clicking on their buttons was a list of planes in production and the option to upgrade or keep the factory and to either have repair on or off. So, I assumed that with upgrade on, the factory would periodically produce enhanced versions of older ones. But, if I wanted to keep the version currently in production I would click to keep the factory and therefore no upgrade. I think that is the extent of Allied control of on-map aircraft production.

Actually, I don't mind not having to worry about production. There's enough sea/territorial theaters to keep me very busy opposing the Japanese

It's per month.

Replacements are off map deliveries. Production is all on-map, and can be destroyed, if Japan will conquer the factory.

You can get planes of specified type, from on-map air units, by downgrading/upgrading them to different models, or disbanding, if they are non-permanently lost.

Hugh, moving the VR squadrons off the CVE means that the "replenishing" function of the squadron does not work. In order for the new squadrons that you have placed on that CVE to take replacements you will need to take the TF containing that CVE to a decent sized port (I'm not at home, so I can't look at my manual to tell you the exact size port required).

If you have the VR squadrons on the CVE and the CVE in a Replenishment TF, then other CV TFs within range of that REplenishment TF could take replacement aircraft from those VR squadrons. I do not believe that VR squadrons left on shore will perform this function (since they are not in a Replenishment TF!).

My experience is that the VR squadrons will perform even if stationed on land.

Bushpsu is correct. VR squadrons do replenish CVs from land bases. I have routinely divided the VR squadrons, kept an operational number on board and landed the others at front line bases. ie, CVE with three parts VR of 9 ac each. The other three parts are landed in a front line base. The CVE can operate as a carrier that way and not just as warehouse. Of course, the CVs will take the aircraft as needed. Then I place other squadrons on board, like VMF or VMSB. I have not figured out how to reload CVEs with new VR squadrons. Sure would be a handy way to get more planes into the game.

As I had not used this function till now - I give the info that you can replenish CV airgroups also from landbases with enough supply and air headquarter in range. I think so at least, normally I don´t see the use of these rep. CVEs, maybe if you operate in the middle of enemy territory without returning to a bigger base for a long time and heavy fighting meanwhile. But it is not wise to use CVs this way, maybe as allied in 44+45 when you get enough stuff rolling over (imo)

Or am I missing some important aspect here ?
