Mirror Game, May 3:

Heap big fight at daylight 5-3 at Attu. All 3 USN BB's and San Francisco were ordered to bombard Attu and perhaps rough up some transports. Instead, they ran into the IJN CA's. I had placed them so they would arrive after daylight. This was a good decision as a daylight gunnery battle ensued and there weren't any annoying Long Lance thingys. Pennsylvania has 30% system damage but should be fine for bombardment duty, Alwyn was sunk and King is hurt. The IJN got hammered by the superior USN throw weight and armor. IJN is spotted at 17,000 yds by radar. Adm. Brown makes a turn and crosses the T when the haze lifts at 11,000 yds. That had to be a serious "Hory Shit!" moment aboard Nachi.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Attu Island at 154,48, Range 11,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Maya, Shell hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
CA Nachi, Shell hits 16, and is sunk
CL Abukuma, Shell hits 11, and is sunk
CL Kiso, Shell hits 4, on fire
DD Hatsushima, Shell hits 4, heavy fires
DD Wakaba, Shell hits 2, heavy fires
DD Shirakumo, Shell hits 2

Allied Ships
BB Nevada, Shell hits 2
BB Pennsylvania, Shell hits 11, on fire
BB Idaho, Shell hits 3
CA San Francisco, Shell hits 7
DD Lansdowne
DD Bancroft
DD Aylwin, Shell hits 8, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD King, Shell hits 3, heavy fires

Cap'n-if you're looking for torpedo-capable aircraft, don't overlook those Emilys. For some reason with this scenario, they're real BB killers-in spite of their poor torpedo skills.

For some reason they refuse to arm with torps at Attu. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Enough supplies present? You mentioned having an air HQ - maybe need to click on its torp inventory to buy more?

Oh, sure, everyone gets together and has a grand laugh at my expense. Why are you people keeping secrets from me? Buying torpedoes? I suppose there is a secret death ray R&D button too?

Hey! Admirar Rord Nerson, how goes it?

I was able to use my M&M Enterprises Co-prosperity Sphere card to buy torps so the Mavii now have ship killers.....they were just out of gas. But apparently there was enough gas for 10 Bettys. They went after a 21kt torpedo magnet but failed to hit anything.

All sorts of Allied interlopers are closing on the Emperor's new golf course resort on Kiksa (Kiska Palms). I am going to try to get Nachi and and her pals in among the sheep East of Kiska. It might be more prudent to just sit back and try to preserve the point margin from the mirror game...but that would be anti-bushido.

May 8: Nachi and Maya fail to "hook up" and have retreated to a postion North of Attu and are low on fuel. In two waves, Bettys with a decent Zero escort go after a BB at Kiska, but the CAP from the escort carrier overcomes the escorts and shoots down quite a few Bettys. More still are lost to flak. No hits.

2 of the suicide subs at Kiska perform their assigned duties and destroy enemy depth charges by ramming them. Landings begin at Kiska and none the dozens of Allied ships manages to hit the 200+ naval mines at Kiska. If the Allies have brought enough firepower, Kiska is toast.

An E boat hits a mine at Attu and is sunk.

Bad turn for the empire.

The crusiers will return to PJ for fuel. 9 Bettys are left at Attu. I set the Zeroes to fighter sweep and will let the Oscars act as escort. I'm not expecting much.

Perhaps you can get some of your piolets to fly CAP over your crusiers. [:'(]

May 9: A Jap sub sneaked into the shallow waters around Kiska and put two torps into USS Nassau, sinking her along with 22 F4F's. The 9 remaining Bettys at Attu then attacked Allied shipping at Kiska, now bereft of CAP. They put one torp into a US BB, though it did not appear very serious. Allied landing troops have not yet attacked.

The sinking of Nassau is a big point boost that cant be closed with capture of even both islands.

In the mirror game, USS Helena and one BB got hit by Jap subs. Helena nearly sunk but might make it. She is in Adak harbor trying to pump out the Gulf of Alsaska. The BB will survive unless there is a second atack but is no good for bombardment duty.

Nope, not over. I had the entire day off yesterday and we only got in one turn. I think Dave had didgeridoo lessons or something. [:)]

Dave has 4 regiments ashore at Kiska. They attacked today, but only achieved 1:2. Even so, they inflicted heavy causalties on the defenders and further depleted their supply. I was able to draw some replacement Bettys at Attu. The complement there now numbers 15. Nine Bettys with Zero escort attacked a BB and CA at Kiska but were carrying bombs and achieved no hits. He had a long range CAP of P-38's flying from Adak but they were overwhelmed by the Zeroes and 2 P-38's were shot down along with 2 Bettys to flak. The Jap cruisers will post South of Attu for a possible night raid on the USN shipping at Kiska next turn. 2 of the mini-subs attacked on the surface and were sunk. To the feigned objection of the crews, the two remaining sucicide subs are ordered back to Attu.
