Hos compares with Advanced Squad Leader

Post by henri51 »

Hmmmmm...the scale of the game seems somewhat similar to Advanced Squad Leader (the board game, for the young 'uns), a game that no one so far has succeeded to turn into a good computer game. How does this game compare to Squad Leader?

It's been a long time, but I think that SL had individual tanks, so the scale may have been a bit smaller.

The last screen shot shows an individual tank, so I'd say that it's the same scale.

HoS is the same scale as ASL. It's based on the board game Band of Heroes.
You can down load a demo of the board game here:

It's the second download item on the list.

It will give you a good feel for the game.

Yep, same scale as that other game, but the main difference is that the LnL system is fun. Ha! Just kidding. I think. No really.

ASL was fun the few times I could find a person to play with but keeping familiar with the rules was too much. The nice thing about computer wargames is they prevent you from accidentally violating a rule...

Yes, ASL is fun. Computers do a good job tracking rules. They are, however, somewhat limited in what a scenario designer can do. There is some cool stuff in HoS, from saving a little girl, to rescuing scientists, to escorting convoys, but most of the unique scenarios took unique coding.

Those scenarios sound great. The big draw of HoS for me will be playing with my friends.

Question: Once HoS is finished, any consideration to licensing the code to other entities so more of that board game line can be "computerized"?

It's possible. More than likely we will continue to do this. HoS is a tough nut for a first game. Stuff like Noville or Day of Heroes would be a piece of cake.

That's great. I'm hoping sales of HoS makes that a profitable idea for you all. Is the coding being done in-house?

Yes, it is our own team, with some serious cred (at least in my opinion), including work on some significant SSI games of yesteryear. But we are not all under the same roof as the boardgames from Lock 'n Load Publishing.

More like the Panzer General era.

Just added what will probably be the last of the voice overs today. These were the lines for a female partisan.

Hi Wodin,

I hope you have been doing well. It always has been moving along. The posting/not-posting here has nothing to do with the game's progress.

This is why I'm waiting patiently for Mark's title.  I have been since learning of the power of the personnel computer(pun intended) waiting on a game that plays similar to Squad Leader.  The ability to play against an AI or human opponents in a game similar to Squad Leader will keep me occupied for hours, days, months.

Stopped playing Advanced Squad Leader many years ago when it became apparent that the prices for content was being influenced by members of the gaming community hoarding the product.  Only to try to make a profit on Ebay.  Plus the modules and core rules have high ungodly prices.
