Bought it, not real happy with it

Advanced Tactics is a versatile turn-based strategy system that gives gamers the chance to wage almost any battle in any time period. The initial release focuses on World War II and includes a number of historical scenarios as well as a full editor! This forum supports both the original Advanced Tactics and the new and improved Advanced Tactics: Gold Edition.

Bought it, not real happy with it

Post by Steely Glint »

1. There are only railroads and no roads. This is a decision often made for simplification in wargaming design, and it is always the wrong decision.

2. There aren't any NATO counters built in. Hello! This is 2011. (Sure, there will be an add-on for that eventually, but they should be built-in automatically. Inexcusably bad choice here.)

3. The scenario selection menu is still badly designed.

4. The map graphics needed a significant upgrade which they sadly did not get.

I'm sure there will be more things that should have been fixed in the Gold version that I
will encounter, but for right now the above list of flaws is enough to make me unhappy already with ATG.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion.

How would you have liked the scenario selection meny?

Also there is a significant upgrade when it comes to map graphics. You might not like the new graphics but they have indeed been updated.

Re 4. The map graphics needed a significant upgrade which they sadly did not get.  -- There definitely has been a significant upgrade to map graphics. One look at the AT map graphics compared to the ATG map graphics instantly tell you that. If you have only looked at a random game created with AT Classic, you won't see them. Otherwise I'm puzzled by your comment.

Also - railroads and roads go parallel. The game assumes that a railroad track has a road going next to it...

Sometimes we are too concern with how beautiful  the game should be that we refuse to enjoy them

ATG is design to do provide unlimited fun , addictive game play and that is what for me the  MOST  important thing in any games    [:)]

Although the game is great, the one thing I am disappointed in is that there is no WaW scenario playable against the AI. One can always play the old one, but it does not have the new production rules and so on (although I am not sure yet if I like them or not...[:'(]).

Graphics should always be state of the art - yes, even 2D graphics - and every wargame should have built-in
NATO counters, and roads and railroads are not even close to the same things in terms of movement effects, supply capacity, or frequency.

A lot of design choices I do not care for were made here. This game is better than AT, but IMO it has miles to go before it sleeps.

But Steely. If you dont like the new graphics, which is a completely ok opinion to have, then say so. Dont say that they havent been updated which is blatantly not true.

There are a lot of wargames that dont show roads on the map. The oddity, if any, was that AT had roads instead of railroads.

Really? The AI doesn't work on WaW? That's a bummer. I probably won't get AT Gold then. Was looking forward to playing that solitaire. My schedule is too crazy for me to devote the time I want for PBEM. I'd rather play low stress against the AI.

You can have tons of fun playing against the AI in Random Games. I know that I have. Also, if you are an owner of AT:WWII, you get a $15 discount on the purchase of Advanced Tactics Gold Edition. The replayability of this game is really high and, well just plain fun!

Doesnt the AI work as much on ATG WAW as it did in AT WAW? So if you enjoyed it in AT you should enjoy it in ATG. Or am i missing something?

I agree. The graphics have been upgraded and I think they look great. The AI is much improved, it's kicking my a**.

The briefing says that it does not support play agaisnt the AI. I don't know, but I presume that this is because the scnenario uses a lot of the new features of ATG like pilots, resources, fuel, pre-whatever, and so on that the previous AI would not know how to use. If I am wrong, why the warning against AI play in the briefing?

For readers who don't already know this, the old WaW is playable with ATG, and uses the new player interface and graphics, but it is still the good old WaW with a new face, and with a faster (and maybe better) AI.

And I happen to think the game-noir graphics are the best part of ATG. Im right back in 1992-3 playing Dune. Theyre stylish, theyre slick, theyre unique, they had actual artistic talent go into making them, and they put you in a place in time (the essence of Noir). To each their own...but I personally disagree with all your sentiments.

I have been really looking forward to this game but as some others I am mostly into playing against the AI.

I really do not see how a large post 1920 game can be realistic with the AI unable to use five or so different type units. The most important of these being aircraft carriers. This is a real bummer and has made me think twice before buying.

A lot is made of the random games but my interest is in historical games. Please don't mention there are games without "construction sets" for this type game. It seems to me a modder should be able to build carriers into his game even if they might not be used "effectively" by the AI.

Yep. I am enjoying the game but the fact that the AI *still* cant use these units (or rather the AI hasnt been changed at all) and that we are expected to pay for another game for that feature is pretty terrible IMO

Good game but I dont think thats very customer friendly.

Having said that the AI is still better then almost any other game ive played.

Interesting sentiment considering that it's the same AI just made faster...
