Help! Invincible carrier task force!

Post by Drex »

My opponent is terrorizing the slot with his 4 carrier task force. He has slaughtered my air attacks wholesale wwith a 126 fighter cap. I can no longer afford to send my pilots to their death. He moves his TF every turn so my subs can't catch up although I'm bringing all of them to cover the slot, still he can move outside the slot. I have mined the waters around Lunga heavily but he has minesweepers and stays out of that area anyway. What can I do to keep him at bay? I have thrown all my fihgter squadrons on 100% cap and grounded my bombers. I have also hidden my combat ships= he can spot any TF I put in the water. He already nailed my last bombardment TF to Lunga.:(

Hi, I know exactly how you feel. U2 (Dan) has a herd of CV's and all my bombers are shot down to no effect.
Some of the things you can do

1. Night attacks, place bombers on night naval attack. They will not find the target as often but they will not have to face that monster CAP.

2. Once your human controled subs are in the area the CV are operating in place them under computer control. Computer controlled subs will "follow" enemy TF's They'll stay in the general area

3. Take a bomber group off some of your carriers and replace with fighter group. Then you can send more escort fighters with strikes. Trade the long range (17) fighters for the shorter range (13) This will give the longer range groups to escorting landbased (farther back) groups

Excellent advice Mogami! i will follow it. what i have done in the meantime is to put all my bombers on ground attack on a particular base and put all my fighters on cap. With my 4 carrier force i was able to destroy his latest attack completely. Now he has a 4 carrier force without a significant striking power. He made the mistake of attacking me wiith full cap. Now i can whoop ***!

Not knowing how everyone else play...

I'm playing Sc17 as the US. I've found in the past that mining Vella la Vella as well as the adjacent coastal hex of Choiseul is useful. Once the Japanese hit the mines here, they have to take an end run to the south, buying some time to hit a bombardment force before it arrives. I've also kept a sub or two to kill any minesweepers that venture out. Keep in mind, I've only played vs AI. Also, with the latest patch, the DDs have started clearing a path through the mines.

The AI loves killer CV groups also, Lexington and Yorktown were guarding a massive invasion convoy to Lunga, and were hit by Akagi, Kaga, Shokaku, Junyo and Zuiho. I lost both, but sunk Junyo, put a 1000 pounder on Zuiho, and crippled the air groups of the rest. This allowed the transports to land everything almost unmolested.

Well i'm playing Japanese in this one, its 9/42, scenario 21. My opponent was able to replace his losses in two days and he's back at me. I scrambled to get my carriers into Munda where I grabbed all the zero squadrons and put them on LRCAP to protect the carriers. Sure enough he hit me with 3 strikes but none of them got through. I shot down 188 fighters and bombers, losing aboout 30 myself. All my bombers were on ground attack. Now I am about to unleash phase 2 which I will report on after next turn. I did have all my Bettys and Nells on night attack/naval but they refuse to fly.

This is kind of funny - I found your oppenent on the regular forum, and he is asking for advice too.

It kind of neat to hear two sides of the same storie anyway.

Plus some great responses to both.

Well I was successful in getting rid of the 4 carrier force but I was hoping to send in an attack of all my bombers with as much escort I could muster. I felt that a large escort would allow me to break through to get to his carriers. Even if I failed he would not be able to retaliate. Alas! he got out of Dodge and I have some breathing room.
