OT: 1/700 water line ship models

SqzMylemon: I used to try and support my local hobby shop in Seattle.  There was a really good one in Renton (Seattle suburb), that was sort of a destination for modelers from all over the area.  I'm in Portland now and there is really only one well stocked hobby shop in the entire metro area.  It's about a 45 minute drive, so I only get there about once every other year.  (I'm usually with the SO when I'm in the neighborhood and she's tolerant of my hobby, but has no interest in it.)

Do you want a CV-6 Enterprise?  There is a resin conversion of the 1/350 Trumpeter Hornet out there.  I'm very surprised Trumpeter didn't release a 1/350 Yorktown CV-5 and Enterprise CV-6 after the CV-8 Hornet kit.  They did release several different Essex class carriers in that scale.

I ended up with two 1/350 Lexingtons.  I thought of making a late war Saratoga with one of them, but I haven't found any conversion sets.  I'd have to do it cobbling together parts from various different sources.

This thread comes right when I was seriously thinking about building something.  I finally have the occasional weekend free these days and I've been itching to build something.  I got out a Hobby Boss F4F-4 I picked up for $7 at Squadron a while back.  I figured if my skills have atrophied and I mess it up, I'm not out much.  It's still sitting there though.

@CyrusSpitama - I moonlight, when I am not playing WITP:AE, as a senior staff person for Amarillo Design Beurau being the official answer guy for Federation and Empire. I am also on the development team for Federation Commander. The B10 avatar is indeed that "monster" the Klingon Empire created during the General War.

As for a source of kits, I have been looking at ebay and there are several overseas dealers there with resonable prices. I haven't looked for the Dragon and Trumpeter brand, but will do so the next time I am browsing.

I hope to get and build all the ships of the KB as it starts the game over time.

Sometime in the last 10 years Hasegawa released a boxed set of all IJN ships that participated in the Pearl Harbor attack, right down to the destroyers.  Hasegawa does commemorative sets from time to time.  They also released a set that included every single version of the Zero ever produced in 1/48 scale.  It included some versions never released in kit form before like the prototype.

That set from 10 years ago would be nice, but I am having fun trying to find the individual kits as it is. I can also buy them piecemeal and not strain my budget.

I have a Kusimi (Ashashio class) kit that, as the directions show the armement, that it is the 4/43 model. I will have to remove a bow mounted 2x25mm turret and two rear mounted 3x25mm turrets. I will have to replace two center mount 3x25mm with 2x25mm. I will add back one 2x12.7cm turret in the aft. If tracker is right this should give me the 12/41 configuration as best as I can tell.

The nice thing about this kit is it includes a seperate package of detail parts for every weapon I need that is, like wdolson stated, of a better molded plastic and better detail. It will ensure I have enough parts to retrograde this model to the 12/41 configuration.

Here is the Kasumi before I paint her. I am going to get a medium gray flat spray that I can use for all of the models I am going to build. Ignore the train track in the back ground, it is one of my other addictions, errr, I mean hobbies... [:D]

My fellow N scale friends claim I am a cross scaler, but not really, I just get paid to work on HO stuff. Hence, the only piece of HO track I own is a piece of flex track to test equipment on!

I used to have apirations of doing Age of Sail wooden models. But they were just too damned expensive. I did compete a few and they look nice but take up a lot of space and are a pain in the ass to clean the dust off.
Now that I actually have the money I just can't find the motivation to get back into the hobby. And I also have a small house and simply don't have the room.

If you look under Star Fleet Battles you'll get all that you're looking for. The Master Rulebook 2010 edition you see contains all the rules minus ship descriptions and scenarios. You can also purchase the MRB in electronic form from e23 at http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB5412

My father started model railroading in the 50s. Most of his rolling stock dates from back then as do most of his locomotives, though he has converted some to modern motors. He finally built a layout starting in the 1980s. All of his stuff was HO. I didn't realize HO was so uncool. (He did always kind of look down on N and Z scale though.)

A model of the Shiranui I spotted at a small model shop in the English village of Dorking brought me back into modelling and eventually here to WITP. I used to make them as a kid, then shot them all up with my new air rifle at age 14.

Made the Shiranui, but nothing special to look at, just very satisfying as an object. My grandfather worked in the Kaiser shipyards in Vancouver, WA during the war, and I also bought a liberty ship and I'm planning to get one of the escort carriers built there as well.

Found this guy recently. Best 1/700 scale I've ever seen. Don't think I'll get to this level of modelling anytime soon. The water around the recently made ships is incredible, and there are actual guys with fuel lines on the carriers, and loading bombs, etc. The Kongo is stunning.

@wdolson: There is always some playful banter between N scale and HO scale, at least around my modeling community. We do get along fine and all enjoy the same hobby. More like comparing JFBs and AFBs. We all enjoy the same game, just in differnt ways.

@obvert: Holy cow! That is some detail for a 1/700 scale model! I don't expect to get mine to that level, but it will serve as an example to what one can do with 1/700!

HO isn't uncool, Bill. It's still the most popular scale. I started with HO, but switched to N scale when I realized most of the more modern stuff I wanted to run wouldn't fit in any of the space I had. [:D]

I will get it started. Here is a matilda that I did about 15 years ago. I have not touched a model in over a decade, but you have me inspired. I am off to our beach house in two weeks and have a P38 lightning to work on. I am only fair to middling but I have loved models since I was a little kid.

I think I've seen other work by that guy who did the Kongo.  There are some super detail perfectionists out there.  I've hung out on some modeler's forums and the perfectionists are called "rivet counters" among the aircraft modelers. 

BTW, I live not far from where the Vancouver ship yards were.  The site now has condos and a couple of restaurants.  I think one end of the yard is still a ship yard for luxury yachts (at least there is a luxury yacht builder down shore from the condos).  The McMennimin's restaurant has pictures of the yard in it's heyday.

Here is a couple of my stuff I did a few years back. This is the old decrepit 1/48 Monogram TBD. Could never get the wing ribs to line up correctly, but oh well. I had a determination to do all the USN aircraft at Midway, but this kit is still the only version of the TBD in this scale today! I remember building this kit as a youngster, but it turned out a little better this time.
