RE: Time for boat drinks?

Post by USSAmerica »

Lots of very good ideas for China, Alfred!  I love the idea of keeping one Chinese Corps mobile to isolate the Japs from supply.  Unfortunately, I didn't provide all of the details for the region.  There are at least 2 units trailing each of the advancing columns, 1 or 2 hexes behind.  Any corps that I tried to move in behind them would be quickly surrounded and eliminated before I could get close to moving into the hex behind the Eastern group.

I will move a corps back from Sian to the wooded defense line to bolster them.

This is a very large scale advance by the LYB's.  I know they must have stripped all of their reserves from the southern part of China.  I would love to be able to do something about it, but I really need to preserve the supply I do have there to maintain the defensive lines.  Most bases are right near the 2x required levels, with Chungking just under 25k stockpiled.

Looking ahead about 4-6 weeks, we will be getting 3 squadrons of C-47's at Aden, but they are only about half strength.  We start building 28 C-47's per month on May 1.  Steve is starting to get every transport squadron he can spare moving toward Capetown, so I can transfer them over to India and into Ledo.  They should arrive in India right about the time we are able to fill them out.  Each C-47 can haul 6000 capacity, which is a monstrous 3 supply points equivalent.  [:D]  Every little bit helps, and if I have to, I'll slowly fall back in China in the direction of Chungking and Kunming/Tsuyung where the supplies from India will be arriving.  If we can get 167 C-47's flying The Hump each turn they will equal the supply provided by the Burma Road, which is 500/turn.

April 1 & 2, 1942
Things have been moving slowly over the last two weeks, mostly because of lots of time on the road for me.  This report is based on watching the replay and the combat report files.  Some things can’t yet be confirmed until we get the turn.

After a couple of deliberate attacks at Darwin, I gave my troops a turn to rest and recover a bit.  The Chickens ran a heavily escorted transport TF into Darwin to try to dump some supplies and the 42nd JNAF AF Unit onto the beach.  My CD guns again gave a good account of themselves with 4 transports confirmed sunk and a couple other various hits on other ships.  There were about 4 or 5 additional transports in the TF, so I’m sure a decent amount of supply was able to be unloaded.  Depending on what shape my troops are in, I might order another deliberate attack.  Two different bombardment TF’s with 2 BB’s each shelled my guys during this turn’s stand down so I need to evaluate their disruption levels.

My PT’s have sure pissed off the Space Chickens at Darwin.  [:D]  They brought two different SC TF’s in to work on clearing them out of the area.  Oddly, the first PT contact of the turn was when the entire KB stumbled across 7 PT’s returning to Darwin, to the east of Darwin.  It was a humorous ship combat screen, but both sides evaded combat.  Over several running battles around Darwin, my PT’s lost about 8 of their number, managed to get in on the supply TF unloading and disrupted their operations (no torp hits), and did hit one attacking CL (Naka) with a torpedo.  These brave guys have done a fantastic job for the Allied cause around Darwin.

The KB (with all 6 major CV’s confirmed to be present by my PT scouts [;)]) slid SE from Darwin and bombed Daly Waters a couple of times.  I lost a handful of Wirraways there and don’t yet know the extent of AF damage.  I might have officially killed a couple of Kates.  These were the only air attacks in the region.  No bombers flew from Timor or Wyndham.  I’m still pulling back every airframe that gets repaired to gather our air strength.  When we move back into the area with planes it won’t be a piecemeal attack.  I’ll be moving 4-6 squadrons of fighters in at once.  Lots of troops, including an Aussie division that has upgraded all it’s squads to Aus Inf ’42, are still making their slow way toward the area.  The Space Chickens are pushing part of the Bde that captured the base inland from Wyndham toward Katherine.  I think they might hope to cut off my Darwin defenders.  Instead, they will be quite outnumbered by the troops reinforcing the area. [8D]

SS KXIV scored two hits on TK Kiyo Maru just off Medan.  I don’t know yet, but I hope she went down.

The only other major action this turn was in China.  The shock attack came in at Sian on 4/2:

Ground combat at Sian (83,41)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 119246 troops, 967 guns, 287 vehicles, Assault Value = 4388
Defending force 83994 troops, 425 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2669

There are some big numbers there!  I did quite a bit of damage, but nothing critical.  My hope in China is to make the Japs pay for their advances and make them burn as much supply as possible.  There have been very few large scale ground attacks elsewhere, particularly none in Burma yet.  Maybe they have chosen to divert more supply early into supporting a China offensive.

April 14, 1942:
My, time sure does fly when you’re having fun killing Japs. [:D] We’ve only managed to play 6 turns since the last update, but it seems we have settled down into a slightly more regular routine recently. We’re currently waiting for the combat replay from the April 15-16 turn. I’m going to try to put together a summary of the events from April 3 – 14 by region for the areas I am responsible for. Steve is currently on the road, but has fairly regular access with his new laptop, so he can probably chime in with a summary from the USN perspective. (Load convoys, ship out convoys, load more convoys) [;)]

First up, Australia:

Largely ineffective air attacks on the port at Darwin to date. 3 AA LCU’s at Darwin have really been able to disrupt the incoming attacks. The Japs have tried to reinforce Darwin with 2 combat engineer units, who were badly shot up by the CD guns and only partial units, I’m sure, landed. Estimates of Jap combat ships sunk around Darwin and Wyndham so far are 1 CA, 2 CL’s, 10 DD’s, and a couple of PB’s. Also sunk are around a dozen or so transports. Several of the DD’s were sunk during two Fast Transport attempts to dump either supply or troops. My CD gun crews at Darwin are big time heroes, right along with the PT crews that are mostly out of business now. There are only 2 PT’s left at Darwin. Several 2xBB Bombardment missions have come in, but they have not had a large scale impact yet. All damage to the port or AF gets repaired overnight by the large number of engineers I have there, and the forts just crept over lvl 5 last turn. I’ve only ordered Bombardment attacks since 4/3, except 1 Deliberate attack on 4/7 that didn’t turn out too well, or too poorly. I took about 1300 – 940 casualties, but between this attack and the bombardments, I’m keeping the pressure on and the Jap supply burn going. My troops’ morale, disruption and fatigue continue to be good.

Around 4/4 I picked up intel that the 38th Division and the Imperial Guards Division were loaded on ships and inbound to Wyndham. My first reaction was a feeling of “Mission Accomplished!” [8D] I’ve now tied down 4+ Japanese divisions in the Darwin theater and hope to keep enough pressure on them to keep them there for several months. I have a force already in theater that is probably equal to half of that combat power, with 2 times my current force level on the way to reinforce the theater. I am not at all concerned about these Jap troops pushing farther inland into Oz. I can stop them if they try, and I eventually hope to wear them down and push them all the way off the continent. Steve and I have agreed to go almost “all in” with the push in Oz. He’s holding onto all arriving Marines, but is sending almost all US Army troops my way to up the ante. My second reaction was to line as many subs as possible up along the approach to Wyndham, and my third reaction was to move up the two squadrons of Vindicator and SBD Dauntless Marine DB’s to Katherine to hit the approaching transports. My subs managed to pick off 2 transports and the DB’s picked off another, but they also hit two different CL’s that were patrolling off Darwin and an SC hunting my subs. The DB’s ran into too much CAP from Wyndham to hit any of the transports after they arrived there and I lost a bunch. My counter move is in the works now, as the AF at Alice Springs should be up to lvl 5 in 4 days (2 more turns). The B-17’s can’t reach Darwin from there, but they can pound the AF at Wyndham. All of the B-17’s in Oz have transferred to Alice Springs and stood down to rest the crews and do some maintenance. When the AF expands, there should be 40+ bombers ready to pound the figher base at Wyndham. Once they are able to take out the CAP, the remaining DB’s and a squadron of Albacores will hit any transports that are still hanging around to unload at Wyndham. It’s still only a lvl 1 port, so it should take a while to unload 2 divisions.

The other development in the area was a para drop on the dot base of Fenton, between Darwin and Katherine on 4/11. 347 troops and 6 guns with an AV of 27 from the Yokosuka 3rd SNLF/1 captured the (stupidly) undefended dot base. My counter move has already paid off on the 4/13-14 turn and should continue to pay off next turn. I ordered the 1/3 strength 8th Aussie Div with an AV of 50 and a tank Rgt with 44 tanks to quickly march and hit the invaders at Fenton. The tanks will shock attack next turn while the 8th Div arrives and will join in the fun the following turn, if needed. Of course, the Space Chickens will fly in more troops, right? Johnny Jap transport, meet Mr. P-38E. LOL Our one squadron of P-38E’s has been shepherded along and was staged at Alice Springs. Steve did a great job of stuffing this squadron with experienced and skilled pilots. After the first para drop, I transferred them up to Katherine to fly LRCAP over Fenton. They shot down 17 Topsy transports last turn. LOL They have been joined in theater by 1 squadron each of Hurricanes, Kittyhawks, and P-40E’s, with another Hurricane squadron moved up to Alice Springs. Several of these guys will continue to fly LRCAP over Fenton while the others fly CAP to protect the AF’s.

The leading elements of the Jap 4th Tank Rgt have marched from Wyndham to just 1 hex from Katherine. They have lost at least half of their strength in tanks to air attacks by B-26’s and Wirraways along the road. I have a tank Rgt and a bunch of engineer units with fighting squads to Defend Katherine, and will march the 8th Division down from Fenton once it’s cleared. My hope is that these meager forces will encourage the 38th and Imp Guards Divisions to set out along the trail from Wyndham, which I’m sure is their intent all along. My reinforcements should get to Katherine before the Jap divisions. They include the strong Aussie 1st Division (upgraded to Aussie ’42 squads) and the 5th Division full of militia, as well as the experienced and strong 7th Aussie Division from Egypt. There are also a few ART, AT, and an ARM Rgt on the road, as well as another independent Aussie Bde. These guys are followed up by the first USA Rgt and many more that have not yet arrived in Oz. I currently have 100k of supply in theater, with most at Darwin and Katherine and am increasing the supply capacity of the trail from Alice Springs (500/day currently) quickly. One major oversight is in the process of being corrected. US subs are on their way to Sydney to load up with mines for both Darwin and Wyndham. After so many turns with no mine danger there, they might come as quite a surprise. This should be a fun show for a long time. [:)]

Burma/India:

I continue to fly out Chinese units from Tsuyung to Ledo. They then march over to Calcutta to fill out and train. These guys will be a big help if/when the expected attack in the region comes. I have two Indian Divisions filling out nicely at Calcutta as well, with several more garrisoning Madras, etc. Ceylon has 4 Indian Bdes an experienced Aussie 6th Division, and a soon arriving Brit Division from Egypt. I’ve picked up intel that at least the 14th Jap Division is planning for an attack on Calcutta and that the 21st and 56th Jap Rgts are planning to attack Trincomalee on Ceylon. I’ve marched 2 Indian Bde’s over to Trincomalee from Colombo. It won’t be fun for Johnny Jap if he comes to either place to play.

In Burma, I had hoped to force the Japs to attack me behind lvl 4 forts at least one time at Mandalay, but they have decided to flank me out of the position. They have more numbers than I do. I feel I can use the defending troops along the Indian border more than leaving them to die gloriously for the Empire at Mandalay, so I’m quickly pulling all but a token rear guard back to India. I’ve hit a few of the Jap troops with B-17D’s from Calcutta a few times, but the air war here has been really quiet for a while. I’m sure it will heat up very soon. I still have the intact AVG waiting to play here before they withdraw on 1 July, along with a buttload of Brit fighters and several squadrons of bombers. Let the attrition air war begin!

C-47’s have started arriving in India and are on their way to Ledo to start flying supply into China, once the last of the NCAC troops are flown out.

China:

Well, after the big shock attack at Sian, things settled in for a few days of just Jap bombardments until another Jap deliberate attack on 4/11:

Ground combat at Sian (83,41)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 104206 troops, 910 guns, 287 vehicles, Assault Value = 3644
Defending force 77047 troops, 370 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2335

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Japanese adjusted assault: 2220
Allied adjusted defense: 3397

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
8671 casualties reported
Squads: 178 destroyed, 389 disabled
Non Combat: 79 destroyed, 458 disabled
Engineers: 8 destroyed, 53 disabled

Allied ground losses:
8235 casualties reported
Squads: 38 destroyed, 534 disabled
Non Combat: 44 destroyed, 784 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 72 disabled
Units destroyed 1

The Japs had about 2 more Bde’s worth of squads destroyed and another Division + worth disabled. The vast majority of my losses are disablements. It seems that 3 Rgts or so from the first shock attack either didn’t attack this time or moved out of the hex back to the East. A couple of units did move. The good news is that some supply has made it’s way into Sian. After the Shock attack, I was down to 80 supply, but the stockpile at the base has climbed to 9500 since then. There doesn’t seem to be any strong additional enemy force moving toward the Sian area, so maybe I can hang in there for a while longer than I feared, especially once I start flying supply in over the hump in a few weeks. The more immediate concern is the fort level down to 3 from almost 6.

There hasn’t really been any noticeable Jap movement elsewhere in China. The Chinese Air Force continues to train pilots in India and they are coming along nicely. I’ll probably harvest most of the squadrons in another week or two and start a fresh crop. I need to look at the aircraft arrivals and the pools to see when I start getting a decent number of planes to put these pilots into. I fear it might not be until ’44. [:D]

That’s about it from my end for now. Please post any questions or suggestions. They are always welcome. Hopefully, Steve will get a chance to update from his end. He can tell a bit about his adventures around Wake I, where he continues to harass the Japs. One tidbit I’ll pass along. The CVE that we hit during the CV battle of Wake I. finally showed up on the sunk list. That brings the total to 3 CVL’s, 1 CVE, 2 BB’s, 1 CS, 1 CL, and 3 DD’s in trade for Yorktown in that battle. A fair trade in my book. [8D]

... They have lost at least half of their strength in tanks to air attacks by B-26’s and Wirraways along the road...

That will teach all who complain that the Wirraway is useless to keep their heads below the parapet.[:)]

Regarding the "lack" of good Chinese airframes before 1944. Don't forget you can upgrade (you do have PDU on?) the AVG to American airframes, thereby releasing the H81 to reequip the Chinese airforce. The P-40B has the same range as the H81 so you really don't lose anything in the changeover. Also the Chinese P-43 and P-66 are not too shabby if flown by experienced and trained pilots. IIRC those enter production in April and July 1942 respectively.

Anyway, just doing my bit to bump the AAR and play mind games with the Space Chickens.

Thanks, Alfred!  The Wirraway's happened to be on training duty at Daly Waters and both squadrons were full of pilots with around 60 exp and 70 ground bombing skills.  I was just about ready to "cull" them and refill with fresh meat when this additional training exercise came along.  [:)]  The B-26's have done more damage, but the Wirraway's made a good contribution.

All 3 squadrons of the AVG have already upgraded to P-40E's and have been training in India to get ready for fighting over northern Burma and India.  I am eager to get them into the mix soon, as they have to withdraw in about 2.5 months.  There are some decent plane types available to the Chinese forces, just not in any really useful numbers until '44.  Sending in 1 or 2 squadrons at a time to fight in China will just get them eaten up.  I need to look at any possible Chinese reinforcement squadrons for additional numbers.

April 16&17, 1942:

Not much action today outside of the Darwin theater.  My Aussie 2/8 Arm Rgt shock attacked at Fenton.  It seems that the Chickens managed to fly in some more troops of the SNLF, and I came off at 1-3 odds.  Lots of disruption to my tankers, but only 1 tank destroyed.  I guess I messed up the LRCAP orders for my P-38E's when I added the additional fighter squadrons to the area.  No notice of transports being intercepted this turn in the Ops Report.  I also switched the following 8th Inf Div from Move to Combat mode, thinking they would still make it to Fenton, but they are still 2 miles short.  Result will be no attack next turn while the 8th arrives and gets set up to play.

The fighter squadrons I brought in didn't intercept any transports, but they did a great job ripping into several Jap bomber attacks on my troops.  I killed 53 Sallys and 17 Lilys (subject to FoW) and prevented any of the attacks from doing damage to the troops.  I expect a response from Oscars based at Wyndham next turn, but it will be short lived.  Alice Springs will complete AF expansion to lvl 5 next turn, so the following turn will see the first B-17 raids to shut down the AF at Wyndham.  It will be an interesting race across the trails of Northern Australia between the two Jap divisions landing at Wyndham and my strongest group of reinforcements, marching up from Alice Springs.  I hope to be able to beat up on the Jap divisions from the air a bunch while they move across the open desert.

RE: Chicken Adobo?

Post by AW1Steve »

I really don't have anything to add, Mike has done an outstanding job on bringing everyone up to date. For the most part, the USN has been just acting like a seagoing "Redball Express", running massive convoys to Oz bringing troops, squadrons, supplies and fuel. Most of my warships have been or are now finishing refits, USN squadrons are full of cherrypicked squadrons and ships are getting the best Captains I can find. For OPSEC reasons , I won't go into future planning , but when the USN goes back onto the offensive, it will be in updated ships, rested and handpicked aviators, crews and captains, lead by talented and agressive commanders. They'll be at their bests, while the Japanese will be worn, tired, and damaged, from their constant throwing of themselves against Mike's forces and defenses in Ozland. Last turn the LYB's loss 3 more DD's , and damaged several cruisers by impaling themselves on Mike's CD guns. 6 and 9.2" guns are really hell on "tincans". The LYB's have lost so many, (and they never had that many at the begining of the war) that pretty soon their TF's are either going to be short of escorts, or have to be using PB's to escort warships! April 18 & 19, 1942

It seems I straightened out the LRCAP orders over Fenton this turn, and managed to intercept a bunch more transports trying to fly in troops or supplies.  I have 2 new aces in my P-38E squadron.  [:)]  The 1/3 strength Aussie 8th Division arrived on the scene at Fenton this turn and will launch a deliberate attack tomorrow.  The Jap Armor Rgt that poked it's nose into Katherine after marching across the desert got smacked around quite nicely yesterday.  Of it's 90 tanks, 30 were destroyed and 20 more were damaged.  There is a similar Jap small unit one hex south of Katherine, along the rail line.  I have 2 Aussie Arm Rgt's closing on it from the South.  They are the vanguard of my reinforcements.

The lvl 5 AF at Alice Springs will be launching about 50 4EB's to crater the lvl 3 AF at Wyndham.  It may take 2 turns (4 days) or so, but I'll be closing that AF, busting up some Jap fighters based there, burning some supply stockpiles, and eliminating the Jap CAP over North Oz.  I've already moved 2 more squadrons of fighters into the theater, 1 P-40E and 1 Hurricane.  Soon the only fighters they will be facing will have to fly from Timor.  As soon as the AF at Wyndham is closed, my 2 DB and 1 TB squadrons will move up to Katherine and try to pick off some ships when resupply/bombardment TF's come back for another visit.  I've also moved a Dutch B-25 squadron up to the region to up the attacks on the Jap ground troops in the area.  I hope to tip the air balance far enough in our favor that the Space Chickens are tempted to bring the KB back to the region to intervene.  As soon as they are spotted, it will be Adm. Steve's cue to make a move with the USN.

The USA 27th Division is almost finished unloading at Sydney, directly onto rail cars for the ride up to Alice Springs.  They will then take to the trail and head north for the party.  That will be 2 very strong divisions, along with the 7th Aussie Div, that should really swing the balance on land in my favor, especially if I still control the air.

As Steve mentioned, the CD guns at Darwin picked off 3 more DD's yesterday, and I know 1 CL ate at least 1 9.2" shell.  Those ships were part of a FT TF that aborted it's mission.  Don't know if they were bringing more troops or supplies.  The Bombardment TF's the Japs are sending have been only a nuisance so far, but they are costing me some supply each time.  I've counted 3 TF's with 2 BB's each that are rotating from Koepang.  It would be nice to take out the AE they must be relying on to reload there.  The first 4 US subs left Sydney with mines for Wyndham last turn.  There are another 12 US subs on the way to Sydney to load up as well....for both Wyndham and Darwin...and maybe a few for Koepang.

The new C-47 squadrons are now online at Ledo, joining the DC-2's there in flying Chinese troops out of Tsuyung.  The C-47's only have 10 of 25 planes each, but the assembly line starts pumping them into the pool in 2 weeks.  The capacity of the C-47 is 3x the DC-2's, so the last Chinese troops will be out and filling out with replacements in just another week or 2.  Then, it will be all supplies into China to try to make a difference there.  167 C-47's can equal the supply provided by the Burma Road.  We're intending almost every transport squadron available to come into Ledo when they arrive to crank up the air bridge.

The next big issue to tackle is the question of where the next major Japanese offensive move lands.  They probably have twice the ground troops that they intended, or more, tied up around Darwin.  That still leaves a LOT of divisions to play with.  We've had sigint of Jap troops planning to attack Calcutta as well as Trincomalee on Ceylon.  I have both of those targets pretty well defended.  There has been no sigint hint of attacks in the South Pacific, or anywhere else in Oz.  We'll just have to keep our eyes and ears open and the PBY's flying.  I know if Steve gets his way, the Chickens may be goaded into attacking Midway.  [;)]  My money is on a push into India, maybe only a visit to Ceylon, as well as a drive toward Noumea and Suva.  I don't think they would try to push as far as New Zealand, but you never know.

All in all, things could be much, much worse for the Allies in April of '42.  [8D]

Precisely why I did not post there your exploits with the Wirraway.

Do you think this helps in irritating the space chickens?

Great....you post here telling our future plans....and that's ok. I post what either of our opponents would already know IF THEY READ THEIR COMBAT REPORTS!...And I'M the OPSEC problem? Trons! [:-] You wonder why we never used to invite you to briefing sessions? [:D]

Um, dude?  The Chickens are not reading anything in here.  They read everything in other posts, and nothing in their combat reports indicates that I am issuing orders to the Wirraways.  [;)]

Sheesh!  Gorilla flyboy users.  [8|] [:D]

I've censored the said post, but I still totally disagree. What are they going to do? Bomb the factories that make Wirraways? Tell their pilots "Attack only Wirraways"? Why don't I let them on real military secret like "P-51's will kick their A$$'s?". [:D]Really Mike, you need to look at what your'e saying, then take an even strain. [:D]

Who is in charge of the Jap troops in China?  DEI?  Oz?  South and Central Pacific?  We have suspicions but we don't know.  I thought we were trying to keep the Chickens from figuring out which of us was responsible for what areas, including the Wirraways attacking the Jap tanks near Katherine.

Absolutely! How would you feel hearing that a group of Wirraways just wiped out your armor? Or a P-26 shot down you best fighter? Or a P-36 wiped out your ace? A B-10 sank a cruiser? If these things don't demoralize you, you are one steely customer. [:)]

If that's your concern, then you need to put out more stuff, not less. We don't always have to tell the truth. The best way to safeguard REAL secrets is to put out a bunch of crap. Frankly if you are concerned about this, you probably should have PM'd ,IM'd or emailed me, and I could have added "MY B-26's" which would have further confused them. Which I might point out to you , up untill a couple of weeks ago was true. We had divided command of the Oz air forces.

I suggest you look up the "AE Skunk trap " the Joe Rocheforte set. We can still do that if, your concerned.

As I've always said, "The secret of success in this game is messing with your opponents head". There's no reason we can't turn your concerns into such an opportunity. [:D]
