Defense rarely increases during missions. Dedicated training missions are about the only way to make a substantial difference in defense.

The wok pans for destroyers campaign has been postponed until 1945 [;)]

Fatigue jumped from ca 10 to 99 in one mission, flying with drop tanks and 8 hexes.
Few ops losses though, one of the problems me thinks is that I don't have maxed out the number of pilots.
After the heavy attrition battles in the SRA I had to scrounge all trained pilots, including those with less than optimal
Air and Def skills. Instead of having 36 pilots for 27 ac units I sometimes only have 28 or 29.

If I committ heavily in Burma now I will not be able to replace the lost pilots with anything but green rookies straight from training scools (36-38 exp).

Yes, it's a bit ironic that combat doesn't increase basic skills like Def into 60~sh at least.

A bit unfortunate that our CAP trap in Burma didn't connect.
I am in a little bit of a squeeze there now because 30ish enemy LCUs have been spotted moving towards the front.
The frontline hexe in the jungle NNW of Schwebo only holds a handfull units inc a full size division. I'm shifting one from the
hex to the right but this still leaves us vulnerable.

So I have been forced to march reinforcements through the open hex north of Schwebo but we're taking heavy casualties from air attacks and a tank bde is down to 70% strength (rest is damaged). To make matters worse the attacks cancelled the movement in progress, another very annoying WitP ground feature.

I will move multiple AA units into the open hex to support and divert enemy attacks, should have done this to begin with but the AA Regiment that had moved 44/45 miles cancelled its movements as well... So I have to choose between taking the hits or supporting the movement with LRCAP once our squadrons are rested.

Another major enemy offensive in Burma will also force me to send more troops back to the jungle.
The question is whether we can defend the jungle line with enough strength and what to do if not.

You have already highlighted the alternatives and different cons / pros.
Not easy at all, have to bring back 6-7k worth of troops as well as our suffering Army Air Force if we want to seriously contest the Allies in this theatre in 1944.

I do have a couple of aces up the sleeve though [;)]

Again our LCUs in the clear hex north of Scwhebo are hit hard and they hardly move forward.
Just added a few of the biggest ground strikes this turn. No doubt I have to rotate these units back for R&R soon.

With Andy's attention firmly glued to the LCUs I have reopened Magwe; our favorite size 9 af in the Basin.
Air support will be in place next turn so today I will only order George and Franks to LRCAP Schwebo and see what they can accomplish.

I got a feeling that we need to stand up to Allied air power in Burma to have a chance at blunting the 44 vintage ground offensive.
To do so we need really good performance from our George and Frank figher units [&o]

Strange...ordered Franks and George fighters from Proome to LRCAP Schwebo, 50% LRCAP and 50% rest with max range 7.
When enemy sweepers hit the hex north of Schwebo (8 hex range from Proome) our fighters engaged them and not a single one stayed behind to slaughter enemy 4Es over Schwebo and Mandalay as planned[&:]

Well, the good news is that our crack Franks and George units eats enemy fighters for breakfast, lunch, supper and dinner.
Despite being swept but superior numbers including T-bolts, Mustangs and Lightnings we inflicted 30% more casualties than we took and only lost 4 pilots KIA and 4 MIA over our own turf.
8 Tbolts and 4 Mustangs were reported lost in A2A today, and more a most likely write offs.

With Magwe almost ready for combat operations and Andy's attention firmly glued to the LCUs in the "gap" between Schwebo and the front line I think it's a good time to
re-open the air war over Burma. Let's give it a try and see how it works out! Perhaps we can discourage Andy again [8D]

CASA (Spanish Built) He-111
The Spanish built version of the famous He-111, actually a CASA 2111 H-16, this aircraft is based at the Arizona Wing of The Commemorative Air Force and was photographed in February 2000. This machine was the personal transport of General Franco and is the last one of its type still flying regularly. It has visited Vancouver, Canada a couple of times in recent years. The aircraft is powered by Rolls Royce Merlin engines because of the non availability of original German engines at the end of World War II. In the background is the Wing's example of the North American SNJ.

The dispersed CAP didn't show up today..until the very last formation of enemy ac approached Taung Gyi.
A dozen Beaufighters were killed by the elite Frank and George units.

Again our troops in the clear hex got pounded, but they also got a quiet turn and Andy has become more wary about
how he's deploying his air force in Burma after we showed up with our fighters again.

Magwe has been left alone as well and with size 9, 250+ AS and 200 engineers we can again direct operations
from central Burma.

A few destroyers lurked into the Bay of Bengal.
Some enemy long range bombers on naval couldn't hit the elusive targets.

This turn ca 250 of Andy's best fighters swept the clear hex before the bombers went int.
I'm kinda amused, this is the maximum effort we forced by deploying our fighters.

Our LCUs have received a 30-40% beating, mostly damaged units.
It was necessary to reinforce the jungle line though, even at a steep cost. Hopefully the units will recover
well enough within a few weeks.

Next turn I have s surprise ready for Andy... [:)]

Our CVEs have received their new TBD units, I'm filling em out with green pilots and Kates and starting pilot training asap.

Mhh flak trap in an open hex, could result in an worse than expected outcome. Chances are good that it will kill strafing fighters and bombers at a good rate, but they can be killed by 4E at 15k+ feet in quite a short time. But never less a good suprise

This turn things worked out well

First of all: Our CAP trap worked perfectly! [:)]
Loads of enemy ac swept the undefended hex and then hundreds of bombers attacked.
- The bombers flying at medium height didn't loose many planes but didn't inflict heavy casualties either.
- The low flying bombers really took a beating, best Jap FLAK results of the war [8D]

Here comes the bonus:
Andy diverted 1/3 of his fighters to sweep Magwe followed by most of his heavy bombers in theatre.

The sweepers met a vastly superior force, in all I had placed some 350 of our best fighters at Magwe.
We did loose ca 30-35 fighters in the air, but "only" 15 pilots were killed and 10 WIA.
A number of ac were also destroyed on the ground.

In return the enemy lost 19 Thuds, 26 Beauforts, 26 Wellingtons and 19 other heavy bombers.
Some 108 enemy ac were reported kills today - ops losses and damage ac are most likely higher [&o]

This should slow em down a bit and we have now made it much more difficult to interdict our LCUs and bases in the Burma basin.
The jungle frontier has been reinforced and I have moved troops back to Rangoon to act as a reserve for alternative Allied trusts down from Akyab area.

So, as we all could guess, the highest loses you took actually against unescorted 4Es? [:D]

Remember, that Allies number of sorties is only slightly higher, and since Japan won all air-campaigns so far, whatever is your current state in the air, Allies can not be better.
I do not see reason, to force 50% of rest for LRCAP. If they do not meet enemy, they will rest anyway, if they do, extra pilots will get into air, and after turn there will be enough damaged planes, to probably ground whole unit for few days. I usually use 10% CAP (I have learned hard way to always keep someone over motherbase) 40% LRCAP, and 10% train. That way most of pilots awaits for actual action.
Also, LRCAP at 7 hexes is terribly far, I actually consider 4 hexes too far, in most cases. I am guessing range have also impact on number of pilots in battle.

Well, yes - especially if you include ground losses [8|]
The last Thud sweep was also nasty as it came in after our CAP was a spent force.

This time I only had 10% of the fighters flying CAP, idea was to get fighters to scramble in increasing numbers and thus be able to hit the main bomber formations and not only the early sweepers.
Agree, 4 hexes is far enough but since Magwe is the closest base to support the front lines still operational I had to fly CAP from long range. Problem with rest is that these ac are often caught on the ground if the enemy hits the home base,
so I prefer either LRCAP or CAP only to maximize strength and avoid splitting up.

Andy said he's hitting Magwe all out next turn; there's nothing there..as my units had 50% damaged ac and repair facilities were still heavily damaged I had no choice but withdrawing to Rangoon.
Just as well cause I don't like to face 300 sweepers and 400 bombers.

I imagine you are still using the last patch. I wanted to give you a heads up about the beta patch. My opponent asked that I upgrade to the newest beta and I did. I found some very important changes for the Japanese side. First, you can now build PT boats (MTBs). That could be good for point defense of forward bases. I just turned on MTB production in a big way. The other extremely important change is that every Zero squadron can now upgrade to Georges and Jacks! I had relegated my Zero squadrons to rear area defenses and training. But now it looks like those squadrons will be useful again once I can get enough planes built. (I had to expand my production quite a bit since I was not expecting to be able use that many Georges and Jacks.)

Overall, these changes could prove quite useful to you. (Also, the new pilot management stuff will make it easier to run your training/allocation program.)

I am wondering, if all those MTBs stuck at 1 day, still suck Naval Shipyard points every turn...

When you will try to make LRCAP trap over those marching units, it will be probably wise, to also include RADAR in stack.
