AGN opening - In a game I am playing as Soviets the Axis player blew everything off the line in order to advance as far as possible in the north/center. What I found as the Soviet was a dozen or more routed units that had rallied in the marsh and northeast of Riga. I have been able to use them to great effect slowing down AGC and AGN. Since these units were going to be "dead" I have thrown them away in delaying actions the end result being any momentum gained from blowing out the line was lost.
That having been said my approach this game is to pocket as many Soviets as possible while still pushing forward in a very aggressive fashion. Here is the AGN opening with the "typical" moves but carefull consideration given to pocketing as many units as possible. Also I did not attack Kaunaus but chose to surround it which is a bit different. I was still able to convert the rail hexes that are usually converted.
The end result in the northern pockets is Aprox 20 units surrounded instead of the usual dozen or so. Several Panzer divisions are across the river and each division was flown in around 50 tons of fuel. 1 Corp came over from 3Pz. The motorized unit that cleared the ports was flown in 100 tons of fuel.
