The X series is a great cure for insomnia.

I've just downloaded X3 yesterday...it's the most drawn out thing I've ever played (other than X2 [;)]), but it's strangely addictive. Feel a bit bad but just sort of waiting for the next big thing in DW to come out, then I'll probably be straight back into it!

It could be addictive for the atmosphere and immersion but indeed crawling from one place to another even with SETA active it's no fun.

having a dynmaic universe where factions battle over systems and youre actions indirectly help or hinder a race or some sort of interactional influence would be great for x3

you can't do that atm? I thought faction missions were related to that or are they of significance only to the player and not the entire universe?

There are mods for X3 that do such things.

So? Ask anybody, other than yourself of course, is the X3 (or X series in general) a 4X game and I'll bet that easily over 95% says it is not. By your logic Freelancer, EVE online, Elites and Space Rangers could all be considered 4Xs, which they clearly are not.
Anyway, I'll read only one more of your posts, and if that doesn't make any damn sense I'll just green-button you moi friend.

EvE Online IS a 4X ! A real time 4X, at that.

It's just that most of the people are grunts instead of leaders.

eXploration ? Wormholes, resources that change times to times on planets, need for recon...
eXpand ? Boy, aren't alliances/corporations spanning over dozens/hundreds systems enough for this ? (and fighting for it)
eXploit ? Well... Moons, planets, asteroid belts, Sleepers, missions, other people... Guess there is stuff to exploit, hehe. And since I can still get any ship or module I want, seems like they're exploited alright.
eXterminate ? Well, hundreds ships are destroyed on a daily basis and there are constantly inter-alliances wars, to the point some disappear and lose their territory...

So, yeah, EvE Online is a 4X. [:'(]

Traditionally, this type of game implies that you have control of the empire that does all the 4 X's...so you would own the alliances/corporations and decide where to expand and how to exploit. I've not played Eve so I don't know if you can do that.

Yes, you actually can.

In a certain way it is, but I see your point. [:)]
I always think that you are a "bodyless" entity in 4X and other strategy games. You have no ship or avatar of any kind that could interact with the game world directly. You are literally leading your empire.

This whole "what is 4X?" conversation is quite similar to "what is RPG?" conversation that I followed at ME2 forums a while back.
Just think about it: ROLE-PLAYING, PLAYING ROLE. What are you doing in pretty much every game in existence? Yup, funny thing isn't it?

I think it would much better to speak about RPGs AND classic RPGs

Aye, we agree. Even if we don't have a hero experience system or other rpg elements.....which I'd like to see even in 4x games, btw [:)]

No problem. As I understand it, the engine/design for  Elemental, War of Magic is like a prototype for Galactic Civilizations 3.

Now that's something to note. I'm kinda 50-50 on GalCiv2 but I'd like to see how 3 will turn up.

Normally, I don't like unecessary bumping, but there's not exactly alot going on right now, so it's fine to just have an off topic conversation. Not a bid deal in this case.

Well in that case....

Talking of X3, the new X game is out this year for those who are interested! I think it's called X rebirth. After playing a bit of X3 the past few days, I'm getting pretty bored already though....maybe the new one will be more interesting. I'm really just wanting to see some more DW action soon!
