Rest Effects?

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Rest Effects?

Post by BK6583 »

Tried a search of this forum and checked the manual. What are the actual effects of rest, other than "...not good in a fire fight", which is all the manual seems to say?

The effects of rest is fatigue reduction. Do you mean what are the effects of fatigue?[:)]

Effects of fatigue are slower movement, reduced combat effectiveness, and the constant desire to rest instead of carrying out orders.

I must say I've never noticed any significant disadvantage to rest compared to defend in the current version.

There is a significant advantage to having rested, rather than blown troops, and the difference a few hours extra rest makes in noticeable during the subsequent fights... Just not noticing the effect of rest posture on 'now' combat effectiveness, or combat on the (relative) effectiveness of rest - where all troops are fighting with some resting and some defending the resting troops do almost as well and seem much fresher at days end.

What are the combat and fire effects? Just what does "...units at rest do not well in a fire fight..." mean? The fire effects table does not address the rest 'formation' (I of course may be mixing up terms and this may be an apples to oranges comparison).

There are two main combat effects: a unit resting will recover morale twice as fast as a unit defending but it's likelihood of engaging enemy is halved.

I'm not sure how strong those effects are relative to each other, but it seems that the reduced fire-power of the resting unit is not significantly more important than the reduced effectiveness of the fire-power upon the resting unit.
Frequently the non-resting unit will be moving/attacking and the combat may be at night. At short range the attacking unit will usually be thrown back, and even if it does fire the resting troops will recover their losses more quickly...

I feel that a resting unit that has to fight should lose it's rest status, and suffer a morale/staying power/aggressiveness penalty in the opening stages of the combat. After a 'deploy cycle' it should begin to recover to full values (if still on the field, and morale at normal rates), but it shouldn't gain full resting benefits until it is not actively fighting again.

Lieste,

I can see the logic of your argument but I don't think the effort required to implement it is worth it. Please bear this in mind, that the resting unit will not reduce it's fatigue while firing or for a short period after doing so. In fact it accrues fatigue if it fires and/or receives fire.

I was only reporting a felt/observed toughening of the enemy once it had 'given up' offensive action and was permanently in rest mode. In fact, I began to abuse the rest behaviour to force march (using rest with no-rest selected and a non-in-situ formation*), and to make a robust (artillery supported) defence. Didn't feel right to do either, but they seemed to offer advantages, which I felt were inappropriate.

*I doubt this has much effect on actual resting behaviour, in terms of rest/fatigue during the movement, but there seemed to still be some advantage to it - perhaps faster transition to rest on arrival, or faster morale recovery during the forced march??

Agreed that it is minor, and there are other things more important to deal with, but if the fatigue/rest code gets an overhaul down the line, it might be worth considering looking at it further.

I do not agree, that any of rest/faigture issue could be considered as minor here. And I am happy to see you Lieste/and anyone molest it.

The rest/regeneration when playing the game is like an 50yr old porn actor repeating "Look at me.. look!.. yeah..." when reciving a bj.
The young bride providing, is acting like Panther, doing evrything to just not look at this face, that she is not happy with.
She got in to mess, she knows it.. and using all her mind strenght to supress those voices. And somehow just get trough it..
