British para ammo

Post by TMO »

From The Pegasus & Orne Bridges, Neil Barber (2009) p118 describing the D-Day drop by 6th Abn Div:
Private Frank Gleeson, 'C' Company:

I had 200 rounds of rifle ammunition strapped around my chest and waist. ...

Also from the same reference (p303) describing an airborne MMG Plt:
A Vickers MMG platoon comprised one officer and forty men, and was broken down as follows: Platoon HQ: officeer, batman platoon sergeant, wireless operator and range taker. Two sections, each eighteen men that included a section comander (a Sergeant) and a second in comand (Lance Sergeant). Each section had two detachments that had a Number One (carrying the tripod), a Number Two (carrying the gun) and a Number Three (carrying the condenser can which turned the steam back into water, plus a liner of ammunition) and five ammunition carriers , each carrying two liners. A liner was an aluminium case which was pre-fille with 250 rounds.

This would suggest that at D-Day and probably Arnhem an airborne Vickers MMG should have 2750 rounds as standard rather than the current 2000 as modelled in the game.

Regards

Tim
