Jan. 22 1942:

The weather in Southeast Pacific improved and hostilities resume. KB launches another port attack on Sydney sinking 2 DDs and an AP. Allied airforce attacks KB but is decimated. A few Banshes breakthrough the CAP but do not score a hit.

Other than that, a very quite turn.

Jan. 23 1942:

A very surprising thing happened today. Singapore fell!!!. It was certainly unexpected. Intelligence prior to arriving to Singapore never gave an accurate count of the allied garrison. It just showed that 31 units were there and I assumed that meant a protracted siege. As it turned out, the allies had only 400 AV:

In hindsight, I should have anticipated this, since I managed to destroy a good part of the Malayan forces deployed forwardly. Also, the enemy had redeployed one full division out of Malaya to defend Palembang.

Anyway, I am in no position to immediately exploit this success. 5 divisions are suddenly free and my lift capacity in the area is not enough. I should have converted a few xAKs to xAK-t early on. Since I was cought unprepared, I am thinking of transfering 2 divisions to Luzon to end the struggle there. By the time the battle of Luzon is over I should be sufficiently prepared to lift 7 divisions.

It looks like Phase 2 will begin earlier than I was planning.

Java:
Enemy shipping is trying to escape from Java. My Netties in the DEI do not have torpedoes for this turn, as I am in the process of moving both 21st and 22rd Air flotilla HQs to Denpassar and Palembang respectively:

We've reached January 31st, but there nothing major to report, this is a period of relative inactivity.

Java: 21st and 2nd Divisions are marching to Sorebaja, liberating empty bases. The Ducth have garrisons at both Batavia and Sorebaja, something that I think is in my favor.

China: My beautiful encirclement will probably not happen

, despite the fall of Nanyang. The northern pincer botched the rive crossing to the south, attacking 65000 Chinese that used to be at Sian, which was left empty. I should have diverted an infantry brigade to Sian right there, but didn't. Also, the Chinese abandoned Loyang and Chanchow and they are heading northeast to Sian.

Luzon: I decided to launch a deliberate attack on Clark Field. Bad mistake. I lost 8000 without meaningful results. The good news is that their flak ammo has been reduced in intensity.

Other than that, I am preparing for Phase 1.5 (Northern Australia). I will post a detailed plan when I find the time.

Feb. 1, 1942:

Subs:
After a bit of reshuffling 6 Fleet (my Pacific Submarine force, containing 32 subs), I 've seen an improvement in performance, and allied transports sinkings are now more frequent. I have subs operating off the West Coast, Ceylon, Perth, Sydney and Suva.

Java:
Still in the process of taking empty bases. 21 Divi is one hex off Sorebaja, which has more than 30000 allied troops in it.

Luzon:
I launched a deliberate attack a few days ago, which went horribly wrong (8000 casualties).
4 Div is unloading at Iba.

Mindanao:
In hindsight this invasion was a mistake. The enemy has gather 20000 at Canganyen. I entered the town, he shock attacked and now I am licking my wounds.

Malaya:
25 Army is still waiting for troop transports to gather at Singapore. Its destination is ******.

Timor:
Laute and Dilli fall. I am gathering a 4-5 naval huards and SNFL at Koepang in order to launch a small scale, diversionary attack on Northern Australia. I had contemplated waiting for 14 Army to finish operations in Luzon to launch this offensive, but I decided to launch it now with lesser forces.

China:
Launched an attack on the Chinese concentration north of Nanyang. I thought their disruption would be higher than mine, but I lost the battle. The north pincer is also stalled southeast of Sian. The two divisions that crossed the river are in bad shape and the bad news is that the 100000 Chinese from Loyang are heading northeast to Sian. I have one brigade north of said river, trying to reach Sian, which is lightly defended. All its defenders marched southeast to defend behind the river, but they can easily reenter the base before my brigade does.

In the southeast, 13 Army is still chasing the survivors of Wuchang and Chungshei around.

New Guinea:
I landed a small SNFL Company at Terrapo, to block the survivors of Port Moresby. 35 B-17s attacked the SNFL and disabled half of its equipment.

21 Division just entered Sorebaja and is waiting for artillery, armor and engineers. It probably won't be enough to take it, as its garrison is reportedly 35000 strong, but maybe these Dutch troops are too week to stand up against a reinforced Japanese division. Who knows? I am about to find out.

Production Notes:

- Producing 750 aircraft a month. I have 100 Zeros in pool, so I temporarily shut down their factory.

- Engines are a concern. I am short of Mitsubishi Ha-32 and Ha-33 in particular. Expanding 3 factories on each type, but I won't meet requirements before the end of April.

- Still losing supply. I have 800.000 less tons than what I've started with.

- Fuel and resources in Malaya seem to migrate to Saigon, rather than stay in Singapore. Good for me, since it makes the journey home shorter.

-Conversions: I now have 5 AKEs of 4900 capacity each (Lima Class). I sent them to Etorofu, Rabaul, Makassar, Badeldaob, Kwajaein. I had also converted all To'sus and most Ansyus to PBs, Kisos to AMC (~70) and AMc (~40).
Furthermore, most of the AK-t conversions are now complete, improving my troop capacity by a fair margin.

-PPs: I bought the 8th Div out of the Kwantung Army. It will be the spearhead of Phase 2. It is currently boarding troop transports at Fusan (which is a level 7 port now).

-Ship Production:
Accelerated Ships - CV Taiho, 4 Unryo CVs, 4 Yugumo DDs.
Halted Ships - BB Musashi, CV Shinano.
I've expanded my naval shipyards by 200 points. I have 900 points in pool and currently gaining 15 each day.
As for Merchant Shipyard points, I have 7800 of them. 2 CVEs, CS Nishin and AV Akitsushima are accelerated.

Java:
Port strikes on Batavia and Sorebaya were launched again today. Several small vessels are sunk and two DDs heavily damaged. The Dutch airforce is almost extinct, a few bombers continue to launch suicidal naval attacks, but are mauled by Zeros. 21 Division and 2 Division (minus one regiment) entered Sorebaya today and begun bombarding the enemy, to see how strong his defense is.

New Guinea:
29 B-17s attacked Terrapo again. The SNFL company I have there is all but extinct and the enemy remnants of the PM garrison are marching towards Terrapo. It will take them a long time to enter the base, but if I don't reinforce it, they will surely take it and. Not that if they do take it, they can evacuate New Guinea under my air and naval superiority.

Borneo:
Japanese forces CAPTURE Bandjermasin.

Luzon:
4 Division is marching to Clark Field. Once there, bombardment will commence in order to ascertain allied strength. Judging from the reduced flak activity against my air strikes, their supply must be almost gone by now.

Subs:
An enemy sub was parked near Osthaven and managed to sink an AGP.
My own subs off the West Coast make contact with enemy ships almost every turn. This turn, I-9 probably sunk a KV near San Fransisco.
Another sub (I-166) sinks TK Capsa, in the Indian Ocean, probably moving fuel to Australia.

New Guinea:
B-17 raids on Terrapo have become a daily routine. This time one did not make it home.
The bad news is that a small Allied TF, consisting of 4 destroyers managed to slip past my Betty net. It is now 3 hexes south of Port Moresby, threatening a transport TF, which is unloading the 144th Infantry Regiment at PM. Only 9 Betties attacked the enemy destroyers in the afternoon, but didn't score a hit. I have a surface combat TF at Rabaul, consisting of 4 CAs and 4 DDs. I ordered them to sprint to PM, hoping they will catch the allied destroyers in the next turn.

Pretty exciting turn.
One of their subs sunk one of ours off the Fiji Islands. I-6 was doomed anyway, following an ASW attack by a DD near Suva in the previous turn.
This is the second sub I lose since the beginning of hostilities. On the other hand, I must have sunk 5 allied subs so far.
The excitement came from two sub attacks on enemy APs off the West Coast, which according to Steven were carrying troops to Pearl Harbor. My subs had two opportunities to sink two APS and missed them both:

Also, Christmas Island and Port Blair fell today. I moved a small amphibious TF through the Osthaven-Merak stragith and it passed unoticed. The 2nd Raiding Regiment landed by air at Port Blair and defeated the small allied garrison pretty easily.

New Guinea:
My heavy cruiser TF did not catch the allied destroyers, which steamed south full speed, having accomplished their mission. No Betties launch. The CAs will remain at PM and BatDiv8 will move from Truk To Rabaul.

Ceylon Invasion:
Most conversions from xAK to xAK-t are complete and I now have the necessary troop capacity to carry 25 Army.
BUT...I decided to postpone the invasion to bring two more carriers from KB, sitting in Truk. I felt that going forward with just mini-KB was too risky, even with CV Enterprise gone. CVs Soryu and Hiryu will need 5-6 days before they merge with mini-KB, which will bring its air strength to over 300 aircraft, enough to counter the combined strength of 3 American and 2 British carriers.

Summary Feb.8 - Feb.13 1942:

DEI:
Preparations of the invasion of Ceylon were almost over, when a large allied carrier taskforce appeared north of Christmas Island and west of Osthaven to complicate things. For two turns, 22nd Air Flotilla launched no strikes and when it did they were uncoordinated, resulting in the slaughter of 40 Nells.
The enemy also parked two subs between Osthaven and Merak. KB2 (3 CVs, 3 CVLs, over 300 aircraft) tried to sneak southeast of Java to surprise them, but it was spotted, so I redirected it to Singapore in order to escort 25 Army to Ceylon.

Luzon:
I dared launching a deliberate attack on Clark Field, but the result was again disappointing. I lost 8000, they lost 2500. My troops need at least a week of resting to recover their strength and perhaps I should bring an additional division. 38 division lies in Palembang, but will be the reserve of 25 Army for the invasion of Ceylon. If everything goes well there, 38 Div will reinforce 14 Army.

Perth:
14 Submarine Division was operating in these waters. A sub layed 40 mines and also sunk a large xAK. I concluded that there was no allied minefield in Perth so I ordered 3 subs to enter the harbor (allegedly there were lots of tankers and AKs). I sunk two xAKs but two subs hit a mine, one was sunk immediately, the other is crawling back to home waters with over 90 flotation damage. Well, no one is to blame but me.

China:
It looks like we have a stalemate at the moment. I can't breakthrough north of Nanyang, unless I bring reinforcements. There are two divisions recovering in Loyang and Chengchow, I will bring them to the party in a few days.

Summary Feb.14 - Feb.21:

Ceylon Invasion:
The original plan called for secrecy and stealth. I planned two small scale invasions on North Australia and north Sumatra to divert attention. I also planned emptying Singapore of all ground troops and heading southeast towards Australia, but passing through the Osthaven-Merak straight, meeting with KB2 there and then head to Ceylon. But this plan was scrapped, due to the appearance of 3 American CVs west of Osthaven (the straight was also crawling with enemy subs).

Instead I opted for a head on approach, i.e. passing through the Malacca Straight, which was being watched by allied recon and float planes based in north Sumatra. So, I expect the enemy is now fully alerted to my intentions and he has the choice to reinforce or evacuate Ceylon. I prefer the former.

As of February 21, the invasion armada is 7 hexes east of Trincomalee and is spotted by allied search planes. Its movement was tracked until it reached Georgetown. After that it passed unnoticed east of Port Blair to reach its current position.

As for air cover, one Betty group is based at Port Blair and searching the Indian Ocean for any sign of enemy warships. Haven't found a thing yet. The rest of 22nd Air Flottila will be transported to Ceylon, after I acquire a good airbase (Trincomalle is now a level 6 airfield).

Java:
Sorebaja fell! The bad news is that its facilities are completely destroyed, probably due to shock attacking. Now on to Batavia. Its garrison is much weaker than Sorebaja's, so I expect it to fall pretty easily.

Luzon:
14 Army is recovering from its previous attack on Clark Field. 4 Division is resting in Manilla. 38 Division is loaded on troop transports and will reinforce this army in a few days. I have the choice to also bring 21 Division from Java, but I will wait until after Colombo falls.

New Guinea:
The former Allied garrison of Port Moresby entered Terrapo and launched two shock attacks. The first one failed only by a small margin. The second one was easier to repel, as the enemy had expended all their supplies. B-17 pretty much trashed one SNFL company, so I had to bring another one by sea and airdrop Yokosuka 1st SNFL (or something like that) from Rabaul.

North Australia:
I launched a small scale invasion, only committing 3 naval guards, a few transports, CVE Hosho and Destroyer Division 3. I took Broome, Port Hedland and Derby. 14 army will expand this small bridgehead once it has cleared Luzon.

It's been a week without an update and the game is now 14 turns ahead of this AAR. I will do my best to cover lost ground. I will begin by summarizing events in secondary fronts. Then I will cover the Ceylon invasion with some more detail. So here we go:

February 22- March 3, 1942

New Guinea:
Catalinas are constantly trying to bring supplies to Terapo but Zeros intercepts them turn after turn. A series of attacks in Terapo drove the enemy into the jungle, doomed to wither and die of hunger. 4 Air Division is based at Buna and a Sally group is assigned to it, with orders to ground bombing.
Also, the enemy launched a few more B-17 strikes on Terapo and Port Moresby. More than 5 B-17 were destroyed without achieving anything substantial so far, bringing the total to 45 since the start of the war.

China:
We reached a stalemate in the north. The enemy succeeded in avoiding being encircled, but at least I made him withdraw towards Sian and took Loyang and Chenchow without a battle. There battle is now concentrated in two hexes, between Sian and Nanyang. Terrain is favoring the defender here, so it doesn't look like the stalemate will be broken any time soon, with both forces in need of a rest.

Alleutans:
4.Fleet received 5 Naval Guard units. They were assigned to 5. Fleet instead and ordered to invade the Alleutans. 5 and 7 Destroyer Divisions escorted the small invasion flotilla. Attu, Atka, Umna and Addak Islands were empty. Dutch Harbor has a 60 AV defending it and I will need to bring an additional Naval Guard from the other islands to take it. I lost 3 Lima Class xAKs to enemy patrol boats, probably built on the spot, because my destroyers run out of fuel and had to return to Etorofu.

Luzon:
38 Division is unloaded at Iba, but 4 Division is still recovering from the earlier deliberate attack which cost me some 9000 casualties. My total AV in Clark Field is 1900, roughly equal to the enemy, so I am hesitant to launch a another attack.

Burma:
15 Army is slowly making its way northwest, mopping up the remnants of Rangoon garrison. Magwe has fallen and its oil center is mostly intact, 250(50). 22 Division heads to Akyab, while 55 Division will take Mandalay and Lashio.

Java:
21 and 2 Divisions are fully rested and ready to attack Batavia next turn.

Misc:
- I lost a Type-1 LT tanker to a dutch sub south of Davao, along with 11.600 tons of fuel, destined for Truk. This is first lost tanker in this war.
- Saumlaki, Makin and Munda fell.
- The sub war has gone well, with 4 enemy subs reported sunk in the last 14 turns. I have a detachment of 9 Nells on ASW duty at Truk, with its pilots now having an average ASW skill level of 55.
- Offensively, Japanese subs scored a few successes mostly off the West Coast and the Fiji Islands, sinking three allied low value ships.

Ceylon

Feb 22:
2.Invasion Squadron reached Trincomalee and begun unloading 5 and 18 Divisions. Coastal guns sunk 3 xAKs and lightly damaged a CL and 2 DDs, but other than that the landing proceeded smoothly. KB sat 5 hexes off Trincomalee and LRCAPed 2.Inv.Sqd. with half its fighters, but no enemy strikes were launched. Enemy air strength is 70 fighters, 40 bombers and 40 auxillary, based at Colombo, while only two Indian brigades and some smaller units are defending Trincomaee (250 AV in total).

Feb 23:
Still unloading. 3BatDiv bombarded Trincomalee, sinking a few low value ships trapped in Trincomalee, but not causing much damage otherwise.
18 Zeros and 27 Betties are based at Trincomalee with orders to search the waters around Ceylon.

Feb 24:
3.Invasion Squadron invaded Jaffna, which is empty. 56 Division begun unloading.
An allied Carrier Taskforce is spotted near Mangalore, trying to make its way southeast towards Ceylon. I-19 engages it and puts a fish into CV Saratoga! Intelligence reports that Saratoga is sunk.

Three of my armored units chased the two retreating Indian brigades into Dambulla and found a strong allied force defending it. The allied garrison includes: 18th British Division, 6th Australian Division, 1st Burma Division, 17th Indian Division, 45th Indian Brigade, 98th Indian Brigade, 99th Indian Brigade, 7th Armoured Brigade for a total of 2000 AV! 25 Army is worth almost 1900 AV, but the bad news is that none of its forces has prepared for Dambulla.

Colombo was reported empty last turn, so I decided to load the 148th Infantry Regiment from Jaffna for a surprise landing behind enemy lines. But Dinahs rebased at Jaffna and provided some better recon this turn: Colombo's garrison is 20000 strong. I redirected the small invasion taskforce to Koggala, only to find that the 100th Indian Brigade was there. 148.InfRgt was extracted succesfully and is heading back to Jaffna now. I lost one xAK to a mine in this "operation".

March 2
AVG decided to launch a naval strike on KB, but it was uncoordinated, Hurricanes arriving piece meal over KB. I was lucky because my CAP was ineffective (only 10% of KB's fighters were set on CAP, the other 90% was either resting or LRCAPing over Trincomalee). Casualties were 1:3 in my favor (Zeros vs Hurricanes only).

The other interesting thing that happened is that an big allied transport TF was spotted 7 hexes northwest of Colombo heading southeast toward Ceylon, possibly carrying ground troops. I ordered KB to move 3 hexes southwest of Trincomalee, with orders to naval attack. With luck, they will catch the allied transport before they unload their content in Colombo.

And indeed, that's what happened! The transports reached Colombo in the morning phase, but for some reason they were still loaded with troops in the afternoon phase. My opponent told me that the entire 7th Aus. Division went down:

Trincomalee's airfield is now level 6 and 22nd HQ Flotilla is unloaded, which means that 7 airgroups can be based here. I will not attempt a direct land battle in Djambula, until the air superiority battle is won and Ceylon is blockaded completely, so no ships or ground troops can move in or out of the island.
The enemy launched a naval strike on the transport TF carrying 22nd AF HQ and assorted units, but Zeros protected the TF sufficiently. Other than this action, things were pretty quiet:
