new guy in town.......knows nothing about witp-ae

Post by larryfulkerson »

Hey there everybody. I just now purchased WitP-AE and downloaded the program and the official patch and the beta patch and installed them and I'm wondering what the "tracker" program is and do I need it.

Any other news for a new guy will be appreciated.

What do I do first? Jump right into a PBEM and hope my opponent is a mentor?

I'd recommend practicing against the AI 1st. Then for your 1st PBEM, start small, like Coral Sea. I generally recommend a mirror game , that is two games, playing the same senario, and you play each side, one as allied, one as axis.I'd do all the short scenarios before you do a "grand senario".

Let me know if you need a mentor, although there are many really super people in this forum all willing to lend a hand.

So welcome aboard! And enjoy! [:)]

Welcome! I'd read AARs to get some sense of how the game is played in PBEM while working your way through the smaller scenarios against the AI. Coral Sea, then Thousand Mile War, then Guadalcanal if you like. Then play at least the first few months of a campaign against the AI. Then go PBEM and never look back.

EDIT - Oops, looks like Steve and I hit "reply" at the same moment. Didn't mean to be an echo chamber.

Definitely Coral Sea first against the AI. All of the TFs you need are pre-formed and the objectives/playing area is pretty limited so it's a good way to start getting familiar with the mechanics and how things work. Don't worry about playing well the first time, just play. If you're familiar with the Coral Sea battle it helps because you have some idea what the forces are and what happened IRL.

I don't suppose you're related to Dave(and Kathy) Fulkerson?

Never heard of them. Sorry.....probably not directly related. Maybe through some ancient ancestor.

Hey, we're from the same solar system!

Welcome to the club!  The game is very intuitive, but also unimaginably complex.  If you're a student of history as most players seem to be, you already have a good feel for the overall strategic situation, what forces you and the enemy have at their disposal, and when and where you might want to fight.  Yet there are so many nuances to the game that it takes months - maybe years - of playing and reading AARs to become familiar enough with the myriad important details and game oddities and problems to really become an expert.  But it sure is fun jumping in, taking lumps, scoring a few victories, and participating in a rather remarkable community.

Welcome to the show.

Tracker is useful to catch alot of things in the game which may in the normal game may stay hidden and got not recognized.

We pros highly recommend it but as a beginner you may just want to run the show first and see what happens. Once you are familar with the show and you know how to get things rolling, you'd may start asking yourself questions about unpgrades of ships, industrial managenment, supply usage etc etc. then it is time to bring Tracker up to the show.

Welcome aboard!

I'm a beginner too (jumped in in Feb) and have to say that this game is overwhelming with a neverending learning curve!

However my way was to start with the coral sea scenario and then immediately jump into a gran campaign Pbem....useless to say i got my butt spanked[:D]...learnt so much in the process btw...so my suggestion is: get some confidence playing a small scenario against AI and then jump immediately in a Pbem which is what really teaches you

Tracker is a MUST if you play Japan to help you run the economy, IMO. The Japanese economy is a game within a game as you can crash it if you're not careful.

Good luck and kiss the rest of your life good bye!! [:D]

If it were me, I'd take Coral Sea first (against AI) and then Guadalcanal for a first PBEM.

Welcome Larry - good luck in the last real game you may ever need to buy or play. Let's hope not though cause WitpII would be a shame to miss[;)]

Since you're already "Matrix Legion of Merit," what have you been playing up to this point?

It's against my religion to ask for help... [8|]

But actually, I have read much of the tracker thread, checked the website, installed/uninstall/re-installed, ad nauseum.

Cheers - well I had to offer, but I respect your right to follow your particular brand of religion and its seemingly cloistered outlook [;)]

Sounds like there is some self flagellation with the installation cycle though [:'(]

But I'm glad your religion is still rooted in Latin "ad nauseum"; maybe a little more fasting might help ...

Cheers - no offense meant [8D]
