Excuse me if I am dense, but after reading the manual I am a bit confused. As I observed and as stated in the manual, when one gives orders to the commander of a squad, the same commands are given to the sub-units, and one can change the a restricted set of sub-orders corresponding to that order for the sub-units.No problemo.[8D]

But later in the manual it says that if one wants to give an order to a commander and wants that order to be also given to the sub-units, one should press the shift key when giving the order to the commander, otherwise the order will not be transmitted to the sub-units. This looks like a clear contradiction to me. What am I missing?[&:]

It seems most movement orders are transmitted to the entire platoon. However, for example if you want to set one of the pathing options (direct|cover|fastest) for the entire platoon, then you must either do it squad by squad or SHIFT and for the HQ.

Yes.
The first time you give an order to a platoon you give it to the HQ. Then you can give an interpretation of that order to the sub-units. Like if the HQ order was to advance with a move path with 1 way-point you can then give an advance to a sub-unit with 3 way-points.
You can then change the HQs advance and give it a move path with 2 way-points. It won't change the others sub-units paths or way-points. However. if you do the shift key while doing the HQ you make all the sub-units move the same pattern with 2 way points.

this is a hard concept to communicate. When you issue a CHANGE to a CO's BASE ORDER, that new orders is sent to all subordinate units. But if you only issue a change to a sub-order, then the order is NOT sent to all subordinate units.

For example. If your platoon CO has an Engage --> Target order and you issue the CO tank an Engage --> Move order, this new Order will not normally be passed on to subordinate units, because you aren't changing the BASE order. If you hold down the shift key though, you can force this new order to be passed down to subordinate units.

If that same CO unit with an Engage --> Target order was issued a Rush order, then all subordinate units would get that rush order whether you held down the shift key or not, because that would be a CHANGE to the CO's BASE order.
