How much fun/

Post by philturco »

OK... It's probably already been asked and answered...but just how much better is this game than the FITE scenerio in TOAW? I love the whole mistique about the Barbarosa campaign and have been playing without interruption PBEM's(often several) as Axis in FITE. It looks like a lot of work to get up to speed with the rules etc. for this Grigsby game. I've been a loyal fan of Gary's games so is there anyone out there with experience with both games that can give me an opinion?

Larry Fulkerson would be your man. He's played FitE to death and is now on his way to doing the same with this. I believe he likes them both. You don't want to ask someone who dislikes one and likes the other. Won't get a good answer. Larry will give it to you straight.

I hated every iteration of TOAW (and hate myself more that I tried EVERY one!)
I love WitE.
I'm sure this post was helpful ;)

Surely bias only arises from an irrational reason eg I hate the game because I don't like the box it comes in. I think TOAW is OK but not a patch on WiTE. That may well be because I only played TOAW vs AI. On the other hand playing WiTE vs AI would now make me dislike it due to unlimited Russian AP allowing majic unit spamming as has been reported elsewhere.

Um........I indeed DO like both games ( WITE & TOAW ). TOAW is like getting a BS degree in East Front Warfare and WITE is like getting an MS or PhD in the same subject. WITE is more involved in the assignment of leaders and things like that than TOAW whereas TOAW abstracts a lot. On the other hand you can destroy bridges in TOAW and that's abstracted in WITE. It's a lot like comparing apples and oranges trying to compare the two games. TOAW is designed as an operational level game engine that's not exactly great for strategic level battles ( like FITE ) and WITE was designed from the ground up as an East Front conflict and it shows.

This is not a great response since I only played a little of TOAW and TOAW2, and I never played FITE. But, it's enough to make me think that Larry must be right: a game engine designed for the Eastern Front full campaign must have some advantages. TOAW always seemed to try to do too much, be too flexible, etc.

The other thing that I will add is that, despite it's depth, WiTE is surprisingly accessible. I am no grognard, but I've been having a blast with the "Road To" scenarios. The manual sort of sucks (it's all there, just organized funny and takes a while to slog through), but you can pick it up and play without reading the manual. You won't do great, but you'll do ok vs the AI, and you can learn the rest bit by bit as you go. So, I guess my advice is that the game is not as intimidating as it seems. (My wargaming experience is 3-5 short scenarios of each of the following: TOAW1, TOAW2, Battles in Normandy, Highway to the Reich, and now WiTE). And, despite not much experience, WiTE is my favorite by far. Go for it!

I think the main reason WITE is so fun is its "less work" to play. The GUI in this game makes it easy to play without much fuss and i can spend hours looking at all the stats in this game . I just love the stats screen with how many victories each unit has and such. I think i spend more time in that darn area then on the map.....well almost. [:D]
