What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence?

What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence?
When artillery is used in an assault, damage is done according to calculations as per the manual.
When artillery is used on the defence, we apply an artillery unit (or units) to that hex under attack.
A hex could be assaulted from as many as 6 sides.
1. What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence attacking enemy units? Is it the same as whats in the manual for the attacker?
2. Do all 6 hexes of the attacker get attacked by the defending artillery?

Hi Joe
I'd go with ...
1. What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence attacking enemy units? Is it the same as whats in the manual for the attacker?
Defensive artillery fire would be calculated the same as attacking artillery
2. Do all 6 hexes of the attacker get attacked by the defending artillery?
Defensive artillery fire on the target hex only
Cheers

But the target hex has no enemy units! It only has friendly units.

RE: What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence?
When I use defensive artillery fires I target the hex where the attacking units currently are, not where they are attacking ... maybe that's where I'm going wrong [;)]
Edit: Above text was a dizzy moment on my part and not correct

With defensive artillery you cannot target a hex containing enemy units.

RE: What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence?
Just had a look in the manual - Assault Phase section, p37 ...
Cheers
Will need to check tonight exactly how that works, e.g. selecting units/hexesIf ANY of the defending units has contact to an artillery unit, that artillery unit may bombard the at-tacking units. The defender may not call for Air Support or OBS. The defender’s artillery support bombards ALL assaulting units.

".....may bombard the attacking units."
I am looking for the meaning of "May".
Especially as the attacking units can attack out of as many as 6 hexes.-

I thought (without checking) that when you assigned artillery for a defensive purpose it worked like the old SSG games ... BiN and before (KP ... AtD1).
... Defensive artillery would blast away at the attackers ... whatever hex they be in.
I'd be interested in this answer.

Had a dizzy moment yesterday, and as you say Joe, you don't select the enemy units.
So ... when the defender gets the assault's defensive fire phase, each hex being assaulted can be selected in turn. The box that comes up shows the unit(s) being assaulted and any of your artillery that could drop defensive fires against the attackers.
If you select the unit(s) being assaulted it changes the unit's posture to Withdrawal (a purple shape appears - supposed to be a 'W') - must admit I don't use that very often.
With the artillery you can select some/all of the supporting artillery units to try and blunt the assault's effectiveness. From what I've seen the artillery fire is against ALL of the assaulting units.
Joe 98 - I believe the word 'may' means that the defending player has the option to select which, if any, of his artillery are used for the assault's defensive fire.
Cheers

Question for the developers:
Is there any benefit is assigning more than one artillery unit on the defense?

RE: What is the calculation for artillery used on the defence?
Have we settled this yet? For manual clarification? I seem to recall that during the enemy Assault Phase there is a Defender Assault phase where you have the option of selecting an artillery to fire and it covered all enely assaulting units. I had three companies from 3 different hexes assaulting my unit and the arty sent all three running for cover with disruption. Does everyone agree that defensive artillery fire affects all assaulting units from all assaulting hexes?
No problem Chief!

I suspect that it does. I was hoping it would attack only one of the 3 hexes in your example.

I must admit, I don't either.

You increase(stack) the firepower of your artillery for this purpose.

No, it affects the hex that you tell it to defend. If three units attack that hex, then you have a shot at softening up the three of them, since they combined together to hit a hex that you assigned to those artillery unit(s) to over-watch.

To clarify:
My unit is on a Rough hex and the hex is surrounded by Clear hexes
The enemy is attacking my defender out of 2 hexes.
Each of the attacking stacks are 2 units high for a total of 4 units in the attack.
The computer makes a calculation: presume that all 4 units are stacked together on a Rough hex and make an artillery attack in the usual manner.
Is that how it works?

I think we are saying the same thing, basically all assaulting units are bombarded by the defending arty unit.

Pretty much, but keep in mind that units which are NOT in command, can't really join any attacking units. They can still attack, but will only do so separately.
Ok, I guess I misread an explanation last night, which sounded like ALL units assaulting anywhere are subject to bombardment by the same defensive artilleryI think we are saying the same thing, basically all assaulting units are bombarded by the defending arty unit.
