Questions to consider

Post by m10bob »

There was a sign posted outside Nimitz HQ at Pearl, for those under him to ponder:

1.Is the proposed operation likely to succeed?

2.What might be the consequences of failure?

3.Is it in the realm of practicability of material and supplies?

Too bad this sign is not posted for modern presidents, think tanks, and Congress to see every day when they talk confidently about wars and military operations.

They'd need to add a fourth line:

4) PROVE that the results you hope to achieve are WORTH the men and money you want to expend....

Actually, if you reword it with non-military terminology, it would serve them well in civilian matters, as well!

Except you would have to add a fourth line and put it to the top if used by politicans:

Is the proposed operation going to be a vote winner.

Or am I being cynical?

My general rubric:

1. Is is illegal?
2. Is it immoral?
3. Is it stupid?

Seems to get me through most things in life. Although I've been known to bend rule #3 on occasion. [;)]
