GOG on the verge to release SMAC

Post by Lützow »

GOG negotiated a deal with EA. For now they released Ultima Underworld, so I suppose we'll see the rest of the series as well and SMAC is already announced.

Omg, the Ultima series released would be a dream come true! I use dosbox but I would love to have a windows 7 version.
After 16 years, Civ II still has me in it's clutches LOL!!!
Now CIV IV has me in it's evil clutches!

SWEET! Privateer. I love that game and still boot it up on dosbox but man oh man, this will be something I really want.

Edit: I just bought it and loaded it up. It loaded it into dosbox. I'm not sure that was what I was wanting.

GoG use Dosbox to make older games run on modern Os's. I still have the origianl disks for a lot of my old DOS games and set them up to run using DOSbox.

For those I don't have GoG is agreat way to get hold of them again [:D]

Cheers

I understand that, but it says compatible with Windows 7. This is actually the 1st game that I have bought from them that I had to use dosbox on. I already had the game to play on dosbox.

I purchased the X-Com series through Steam and it loads a custom version of Dos Box when I want to play the games. This is probably the easiest and maybe the only way to get some of these old games to play on modern systems. Does anyone know if there is a league way to purchase the old classic Waste Land?

Wasteland is getting very rare lately, even on eBay. About year ago, there would be 2-3 copies on eBay almost constantly. Now one is lucky when there's just one...

Thanks for showing the current i.p. owners that the X-Com name is worth raping.

It actually is done pretty well for Privateer. The speech pack is included, but I don't see Righteous Fire. But all in all, worth $5.95.

Wasteland is actually included in a few anthology packs, including this 10 Year Anthology, with multiple copies available through Amazon resellers: http://www.amazon.com/Interplays-Year-A ... B000K5782S

Also in this collection, albeit more expensive: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-RPG-Arch ... B00001QEPC

What's the point of buying a collection, though? It doesn't have the original box and the original manual.

Original Box, no. But it does have the manuals for each game in the collection.

Otherwise, the point is to have the game and play it, though I of course understand that won't work for you if you're looking for an original copy as a collectible. Looks like there are some other decent classics in each collection too. Still, it's a shame there's no digital download-- I'd like the developers (or at least the current I.P. holders, if they're not the same) to get compensated for the purchase, and possibly see the brand revived if there were enough interested people.

According to Dundradal in this thread at the GOG Wing Commander Privateer forum:

No it's not the speech pack version.

It's the CD version without RF included. This means it has speech throughout. The speech pack only added it to the intro and during combat.
Not a big deal according to him though.

Note how there wasn't a single new Fallout or Planescape:Torment like made by the i.p. holders despite all those people are that are buying these games.
Brand getting revived? What's the point? We're talking about computer games here - brand is nothing - gameplay and design is everything.
Brand getting revived doesn't mean another game like Wasteland. It means a Wasteland FPS and tons of marketing guys and journalists writing about how Wasteland is a horrible game and about how it wasn't FPS only because there wasn't technology to make FPS games back then.

Buying these games is basically a waste of money. It doesn't bring anything good as these people will never make games like they used to. They sold out.
It's better to save these money for games that are actually being worked on now by people who chose to continue making games for us, not for the lowest common denominator.

And at a whopping $6, it's an obvious purchase.
