Replenishment TF Won't Refuel TF

My replenishment taks forces don't auto-replenish other task forces in the same hex after multiple turns. I've tried this with the replenishment unit both in patrol and retirement allowed modes. The oilers have oil. The refuel switch on the supported task force shows "OK to Refuel".

Are there additional swithes that need to be turned?

Is there a particular speed at which both TF must be set?

i've noticed that sometimes the "autorefuel" doesn't seem to work as advertised... normally, i will manually order the TF to "refuel now" and that works.

Also, do you have AOs in the replenishment TF or TKs? For some reason, they decided TKs are not eligible to refuel other units (the reasoning behind this was confusing to me.)

The reason why tankers can't refuel other ships undereway is a lack of the proper gear to transfer fuel at sea, including the appropriate transfer hoses and pumps.

How do you manually replenish? Do you just Refuel TF at Sea?

Are both your TF on Cruise Speed?

The business about tankers lacking hoses is bogus... they can't even refuel themselves... they carried pipes/hoses, and could (and did, iirc) refuel other ships by gravity feed, although pumps were far faster, of course.

To refuel at sea, hit the "Replenish TF at Sea" button on the right side of the TF info screen.

OK. I'll try "Replenish TF at Sea".

To use gravity feed, you need to have a receiver at a lower level than you. So tankers should be able to gravity refuel their small escorts but not a larger ship like a CV.

There are glitches in the game. I can't get the aircraft based at Gili Gili, for example, to do much of anything in the Guadalcanal scenario, even after moving engineers and aviation support into the base.

I guess it's understandable that such a large game based on dated software has glitches, but so much of it works so well it's disappointing when something expect (like refueling a TF at sea) doesn't happen "automatically" as advertised.

True - but he said he is using TFs with only AOs, so presumably it is a different problem...

One thing that might prevent automatic refueling is having used up OP points for some reason (for instance, refueling a different TF, attacks, etc.) ... although i've found this is usually NOT the problem, it does occur from time to time.

I am currently reading Samuel Eliot Morison's USN Ops in WWII. He doesn't differentiate beween oilers (AO) and tankers (TK). As a matter a fact, he refers to the fleet oilers that supported the fast carrier task forces as "tankers". I know this doesn't apply to game play, but it is interesting that someone whose job it was to record what was going on accurately (he had 9 battle stars at the end of the war - no armchair historian) would blur the distinction between the two.

i suspect the only real difference is that AOs were commissioned ships, and TKs were not... therefore the crews of AOs would have been in the USN (or RN, etc.) AOs MIGHT have had some specialized equipment, but TKs had pumps - at least enough for moving cargo around (to keep holds equalized to stay in trim, etc.)

Maybe the AOs had MORE pumps, etc., but i think the whole business of differentiating between them is more than a bit bogus. Obviously, the crew training would have been different, and perhaps that is what the game designers had in mind.

Well, in any case, if I can't get them to refuel carriers I will simply have to park them at a nearby friendly beach and bring the carriers to them.

Are you sure you have "Ops" points available? I have found that when refueling TFs from AOs the smaller escorts seem to refuel from the larger Capitol ships BBs & CVs and this tends to drain them out and use points that may be needed for the larger ships to refuel themselves from the AOs.

No I'm not sure about the Ops Points. I know you are supposed to share a hex with the AO TF for one turn. does that mean that hex hex should be your "destination" for two turns?
