Strategic planning – the paperless office

Post by Fred98 »

This game requires much planning and thinking ahead.

Currently I use pencil and paper and write notes to remind myself that this unit is doing such and such with this purpose in mind.

Otherwise I find, in a PBEM game, that I have forgotten the purpose of sending him over there.

It would be handy if there were a little pop up window with a small text notepad. This would be saved with the game file. Here I could write notes to myself.

Each save game file would have its own notepad. Obviously my opponent could not read it as she does not have my password.

Hi, You know, that is how I keep track of my PBEM games.
Each turn I copy and paste the combatreport into a notepad I keep for each game (example game in slot ten Has Folder "010AAR" inside folder notepad "010AAR(1)(as they fill up I make new ones.) After I copy paste the combat report I make comments on what has taken place, what I think enemy is up to and any new dispositions I am making
"Sent 3 CA and 5 DD to Rockhampton to reinforce ships covering Australian coast")
"Supply at L'ville 100k fuel 45k, need to increase fuel to 100k for Operation to Santa Cruz, require infantry unit, baseforce, and engineers. Assemble transports and escorts")
("Fighter group arrives Noumea in 3 days, transfer to Efate when morale reaches 99")

You can even ALT-Tab out of program and make notes as you go.

It is important to keep track of enemy movement

"Spotted CV Akagi 90 miles ne of Shortland"
next day
"CV Akagi reported 90 miles e of Rabaul" now you can understand enemy movements a little better. Also when you learn what ships go into certain types of taskforces you do not need to spot entire TF to know what kind it is.
hint: IJN CA Tone carries 5 float planes, when I spot Tone I think aircombat TF since she preforms best in that type of TF

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

A lot of empire building games now have these. "Space Empires IV" has a 'log' that you can write anything in them. Having this for WitP will be useful as well, as well as being able to check an 'automatic' log of history (i.e., where/when/why certain ships were sunk during battle, etc...)

Hi

I really like this idea. I remember when my brother played wargames when I was a kid he used to keep track of everything on paper. I on the other hand try to keep it in my head:) So for me it does not matter but a lot of wargamers would appreciate this kind of feature for sure.

I keep track of it all in my head also. Hmmm, wonder if this is why I lose so often.
