TD, that is what he has had success with in every game he has played and those games have been under 1.04 betas.

I know your latest winter was with 2ndACR, but I am not sure what version you were playing when you launched your offensives. The other thing is I think your army was not as pressed as what some of these Russians armies were pressed and so in much better shape to launch counter attacks. I also think 2ndACR was not as prepared as Pelton has been when it comes to winter.

The forts do help under the new patches when it comes to German loss reduction, making them stronger.

Most of the AAR's I have seen, the Germans are very weak during December especially, but get stronger as the Blizzard goes along switching from month to month.

We waited for the patch that more or less fixed the blizzard [.x.24]? Believe me, a single unit (no matter the fort level: realistically = 3) CANNOT resist the Red Army assaults. This is what I discovered. And of course, what I exploited.

So either he had managed to literally massacre the Red Army during the summer or he did like Christ: the miracle of draught of fishes, but with German divisions instead of fishes [:D]

Tarhunnas, the consequence of my reasoning is simple: have 2-units German stacks in critical places (forts are still necessary, minimum level 2). And have single units in non critical places of the front. After all, Q-Ball army is not that massacred [:)]

Whats is relevant are the simple cold hard facts.

Forts are relevant [8D]

Simply look at the AAR I am playing in and this one and you can see the huge difference.

The first turn of blizzard Tarhunnas is getting pushed around.
It has taken Arstavidous 8 turns of hvy losses and 200+ attacks to make 3 little bubbles so far in my lines. the more he attacks the weaker he will be come spring [:D]

I will stand by facts.

Pelton

This IS interesting, however, it is filling up my AAR. Maybe you could continue the discussion in a separate thread in the War Room?

I will just stop sorry, I think I made my pt [8D]

Nice job on wiping out beachhead.

Also like what your doing in the great white north. I have to do same, always learning which is good I still have a ton to learn by the looks.

If you mean the Finns, there is a price to pay I have discovered. Too much offensive action will burn out the Finns, and coupled with the morale loss, there will be CV 1 Finnish divisions in the autumn of 1942. But I think it's worth it if they can suck away some Soviet forces from the German front.

Here is a map from turn 28, northern sector. The Finns are pushing forward in the north while the Sovs are pushing forward at Vyshni Volochek. Kind of a revolving door. Map before Axis moves.

Losses during enemy part of turn 28. Ouch!

Q-Ball is conducting an excellent winter offensive, and it hurts!

Here is a map from the southern part of the front. Attacks all along the line, most of them retreats. I just have to be thankful nothing is isolated, except a Rumanian cavalry brigade, but I can live with that.

The south after Axis moves. The line is pulled back again. The Rumanian cav brigade has been un-isolated but I leave it in place. Fighting withdrawal is a good job for cavalry. And if the Sovs take the trouble to isolate them, it will cost them momentum, so it will be well worth it.

Q-Ball is pushing hard. Yes close to 150k dead is a good number for him.

Hows your manpower pool looking?

Turn 29.

Continuing Soviet pressure, especially in the center. Kharkov and Orel are abandoned rather than risk having troops surrounded there. Map after German moves Turn 29.

Yes, Q-ball is really doing a good winter offensive. I am learning the hard way that I should have prepared better. But it is a good experience.

Here is production turn 29, filtered to Germany.

Turn 30. Losses from the Soviet turn. Still very hurtful, but not as bad. The improvement of German CV in January is helping.

Some bright spots. A Soviet stack makes the mistake of trying to infiltrate between two German mountain divisions.

Northern part of front after Axis moves. The Soviets are making considerable gains in the Vyshni Volochek area, but losing terrain is not really a problem.

That's not looking so good. But just hang in there...block up every hex you can in front. Those lead units will be weaker than you might expect....

Lines patched together again. Nothing dramatic to show in a screenshot. It is becoming easier to launch counterattacks. Lone Soviet tank brigades are easy meat. This shows in the high Soviet tank losses. Below losses after Axis turn, showing losses inflicted in counterattacks.

I don’t see your CV's improving yet. They still look like mostly '1's for Divisions on turn 30.
I’m behind you on turn 28, and my Crimea front has collapsed! The blizzard is more fun than I anticipated (BigA’s guide helped a lot. (Need to buy him a beer next time I am down south in the land of tin miners).
It does the axis good to learn to retreat in good order IMO.
Hopefully, (puffs chest out), come the spring, we won’t be going backwards anymore!

Keep it up mate. This AAR is riveting.

@Tarhunnas:

since you do the field research job for us about "germans and the blizzard":

what would you do, do better or not do next time to be in a better position at the beginning of the blizzard time in 1941?

i play a game against AI as axis and find out that its so much to do in 1941 in such a short time.

whats a "must have" in 1941? leningrad and/or moscow and pure infantry advance in the south?
