Soviet Cavalry in WWII

and

Red Army Horse Cavalry

As you can see, Soviet cavalry in WWII were a formidable force, comprised of over 100 divisions each with more total fire power than a rifle division. Additionally, they were extraordinarily manueverable. Also, keep in mind that the soldiers didn't necessarily fight from their horses, they could and would fight dragoon style with all of the advantages of infantry, plus be able mount their horses and ride for miles around the enemy rear. I believe the exposition on cavalry in the game manual even mentions that there were cases where Soviet cavalry fought for weeks or months behind German lines, while German cavalry primarily went around raping and pillaging.

So I guess its not so over rated.

As far as the raping and pillaging went, Russians had nothing to R/P then there own poeple until 44/45. At which time the Russians raped and pillaged what they could in Poland, Germany and the minor allies.

Russians were much better at killing there own poeple then other countries poeple, heheheh

There is no "morale" high ground for eather country.

Batskelevich's Cavalry Group even raided in the Slutsk area in July 1941. Most of the raiding by cavalry took place when lines were unstable allowing them opportunity to slip through. Can't recall the name of the group that harrassed the German Army Group Center in the first few months of 1942. It took the Germans a couple of panzer divisions and other formations to finally clean them out.

I went to a talk given by Antony Beevor about 2 years ago. He raises the point in his book "The Fall of Berlin 1945" that the German citizens of Berlin were (rightly) terrified at the approach of the Russian army. During the talk he confirmed his opinion that the average Berliner was reasonably well aware at that time of the atrocities committed on the Eastern Front, and the relative difference between the way that the German troops had behaved in Russia compared to their behaviour in France for example (Wehrmacht soldiers were forbidden from smoking on the streets of Paris lest they discard cigarette ends). The houses of families of soldiers were found with photographs from the eastern front of their young sons in arms standing over dead "untermensch", amongst other portrayals of carnage.

So the citizens of Berlin were sure that the Russian soldiers would rape, pillage and slaughter when they reached Berlin, and more or less speaking they did. In fact the Red Army pretty much stopped taking prisoners for a while after the liberation of Kiev in November 1943, after they saw what the Germans had done to the city.

Moral high ground? No, probably not, but it wasn't to be expected.

Apologies for not being clear. I wasn't trying to make a moral point, simply attempting to point out the difference in battlefield effectiveness between German and Soviet cav. The attrocities committed by the Soviets against the Germans (and their own people) are well documented.

Belov?

Colonel General P. A. Belov of the First Guards Cavalry. I believe that was it.

Quite a hazard to the Germans. BTW, Belov is about like saying Smith. [;)]
