Yes, I agree with TD, cavalry is important in summer too! They are great pocket-breakers, since they are often the only unit able to slide from ZOZ to ZOC. They are also good for rear area raids, messing up rail lines and displacing HQs against careless Axis players.

Use your cavalry early and often. So what if some of it dies? It comes back gratis up until November.

When the rasputitsa hits, that's when you pull it all out of the line and get it set up for corps conversion in December. But there's no reason for them to sit idle in the rear before then, when they can be launching raids and cutting off german spearheads.

My point with the cav is to be careful with it, not protect it totally. A Russian using it as a main force/main line unit like infantry is making a big mistake is my point. I have no issue sacrificing some cav to put German panzers out of supply for a turn. I have issues if the Germans pocket 6 or 7 divisions that were trying to hold a line.

It's funny how so many folks have so many different ideas. The bottom line is you will need to find what works for you as you can see there are many different strategy styles.

and that makes this game so great. you hae a board and units on i and thousends of opportunities.

as a somewhat newbie player i dont feel that i am ready for risky raids and all the expert suff like the raids out of the swamps in the german rear like so many vets do in their AARs . so in my next game as red army i will keep the cavalery behind the front.

Uh...I don't think so. Rule 18.1.1.1 states that Soviet Rifle, Motorized and Tank Divisions are rebuilt for free. Not Cavalry. If this has been changed, I don't recall seeing the memo.

Meh, they are still worth using. Sovs get something like 60 cav divisions over the course of the war, if you lose a few, shrug.

I should have edited my quote better. I wasn't disagreeing with using them, which is why I didn't quote the second part. I firmly believe you should use every tool at your disposal.

For a game against JAM the mud comes on turn 4.
