Training Groups

Post by Arigoth »

Manual says I can define some groups as "Training groups" and can stock them with pilots but but it never does tell me how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just look on the mission column of your air group, set it at *TRAINING*,100% for whatever skill you want them to learn.

Once that unit achieves the desired skill level, disband the unit, the planes and pilots will go into the pool, where you can selectively place individual pilots into a unit of your choice.

This is a reference to an earlier version of the game where you could have dedicated "training squadrons" that could hold more pilots and perhaps some other features. This did not last long and the feature was removed in an early patch. Not sure why, but it was a bit redundant as any unit can be set to training.

As was the case in UV and WITP, the original manual is now very much out of date. Still useful but there have been many changes to the game.

The Japanese player does get some training groups starting in 44.

No, still plenty of good stuff in the manual. Reminds me, I will have to read it someday...[:D]

Actually, if you mod the game you can have training groups and they do work...for players. If you look in the groups database you will see a 'Trainer' checkbox...this is what triggers a group to be a training only group. I don't think the AI really gains any advantage from them though.

I have tried it, it does work...

You add in a group (I used groups of 48 planes for my test). And in game you can do 2 things:

1. Pull in an 'instructor' or two which are high skilled pilots (generally 80 XP plus) which do seem to speed the training.
2. Each group of 48 planes could support 144 'students' though I suspect 144 is a hardcoded cap regardless of the number of planes.

End result is it does work, and once the 'students' hit the appropriate XP level, they will be dispersed to the various squadrons that need pilot replacements.

But it is extra micromanagement that is unnecessary, and the Dev's obviously cut it out for good reasons, whether we know them or not.

Ok, sorry, but just want to make sure of this.

So, the manual states you can have "training groups" (section 16.3), but they are not in the game now?

If they are still in the game, I am totally confused as to how to start one, advise please.[&:]

If they are not in the game, it is simply use training missions or find an enemy base and run missions to them?

Yes, forget training squadrons.
Generaly one can say that every squadron which uses the training mission is a training squadron.
About your second question, sure you can train also a couple of rookies via lets say sweeps over enemy bases but uh dont be surprised if some Zeros show up.
