ARD Questions

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-v1108c, mid 6/43, Allies. My first ARD is approaching Midway.

1.Where should she go? PH? Guam-Saipan?

2. Can ARDs repair major ship damage(Damage in the red)?

3. Can they repair flotation damage?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

1. PH only if you want to park her for now. PH already has a shipyard, the big advantage of the ARD is for more forward bases. Without knowing your situation in more detail can't comment on the other specific locations you cite, but you basically want it forward enough that if you get a cripple that might sink on the way to a major base, you can bring the float damage down enough to chance it. Of course, ARDs are slow and vulnerable, so you can't necessarily bring them to the front lines.

2/3. ARDs can repair major float damage.

In my game well into 44 I have several all across the areas without good ports and even small shipyards.. and as stated above the ships that cannot make it, for me its anything above float damage of 39, beaches in some small place where hopefully the enemy will not find it.. then I move an ard to it and several longe months later the ship can limp to a port with a shipyard. I have beached ships in Java, and all throughout the area near Phillipines. some also from earlier near Solomans

This is my first game of AE. I have got to March of 1944 playing the allies in scenario 1.

I have some ARDs but can not make them repair any ships with flt damage. I have tried
using them disbanded in port. Also in a TF either docked or undocked. All of the ports have
had lots of supply on hand.
Is there some secret to using them?  [&:]

I have found their best use in advance sub bases. ARD, AS & AR is pretty good combo to keep subs running without need to sent them to repair yard.

I send it to Alaska, with an AS and send all the S boats up there.

Noumea might be a good choice. I did a web search and historically the first one went to Espritu Santo and the others to Guam and the Admiralty Islands - not a lot of info on the web. One was mistaken as a CV and sunk by an IJN sub. There are some nice pics on the web of the ARD's drydocking battleships.

Combining them with an AS and AR as others suggested above sounds like a good plan. I've found that having a sub base as forward as possible is a great force multiplier.

Historically, just because my trivia button was pushed, the S-Boat basings in the Aluetians were a disaster, but it doesn't mean you can't do it in game. [:D]

It works well in the game, you just need the ARD there for the occasional hull damage from asw attacks. Also you have to run supplies and fuel up there. Off the top of my head I think I develop dutch harbor for the base.

I have one ARD that arrived in Portland OR. However, it is too large to move down the river to the open sea, so is stuck in Portland. Anyone else have this problem?
