AAR trial game vs the AI

Post by kevini1000 »

So I have no pic until I get unlazy and install MS paint. I'm putting up the information for sort of asking questions about game mechanics as I go. I'm mostly concerned with logistics and organization as I go.

Turn 1 6-22-41

AGN -> I did the Riga thing and also transported in 2 division + 2 regiments. The other 2 Baltic ports were taken and 1 motorized division from the 39 Panzer joined in. I have swiss cheese of pockets. 1 corps of the 9th army pitch in the area as well.

AGC -> I have 2 main lanes of advance linking up near Minsk. I did my best to trap as many Russian units as possible. I used all of the 2nd Panzer army mobile unit for the Southern jab South of Minsk. Model with the 57th Panzer corps captured Minsk. 1 of the defending infantry division was badly mauled as a reserve unit in a prior battle and this made the job much easier. I have 1 big pocket and 2 small pockets in this area.

AGS -> Only 1 infantry division from the 24th Panzer was added to 55th corps of 6th Army. I have 1 big and 2 smaller pockets formed here as well. I assign Hollidt to the 14th Panzer corps.

with few remaining AP's I sort out the some of the overload problems. I get the 24th Panzer down to 8:8 and the same for the 4th corps of the 17th Army. I feel I should have left the Cav division with the 24th Panzer and assign the infantry division in stead but too late now. I put all of my active mobile divisions on refit along with the GD mot reg.

Turn 2 start 6-25-41

The pockets held. 1 small pocket might not have held against a human.

I got to work dropping air supplies and have all my mobile division about 100% fuel some have close to 125%. This turn will take some time as this is an organizational mess. I'm all ready considering avenues of adavance. But at the end of the day I want to keep my Panzers corps' divisions close to their HQs and I don't want to push them too hard. I want to continue to sort out the overload problem this turn and assign a few leaders.

It would seem that my stored fuel, oil, supply and resources increased. A few factories didn't produce. My supplies in units decreased while ammo and fuel increased.

Since I'm worried so much about trucks. I went from 478k total trucks to 481k trucks. This is with 18k in the repair pool even though the event log say that I had 3.2k damaged. I lost 2.7k trucks. Some of the numbers here are a little confusing. The event log says that I build 2.4k vehicles though my production says I build 3.2k.

The Russians are down 7.9k trucks so far.

The between turn attrition was very hard on the Romanians.

I'll give a follow up on turn 2/start of turn 3 then I get there.

Turn 2 progress.

I finished all of AGN sector except Air units and some HQ's. The infantry mopped up the pockets and most infantry moved north of the big river. I sent 1 Panzer corps to clear Estonia with the exception of the Island and western tip of Estonia. I landed 2 more infantry divisions in Tallinn. The other Panzer corps took Pskov.

AGC -> All the infantry is moved. The smaller pockets are gone and the big center pocket is greatly reduced. I'm still pondering my moves with the Panzer corps. I want to finish up most of AGS before thinking more on this section.

AGS-> Most of the infantry and the stuff along the Rumanian border is moved. The smaller pockets are cleaned up. The big Lvov pocket is only slightly reduced. This one will still be around for some time to come. I still have the Panzer corps to moves. I expect to add some additional mini pockets that look similar to other ARR I been reading. The 3rd Panzer corps is a little beat up. These guys did plenty of fights turn 1. I want them moving but but fighting as little as possible.

Turn 2 complete

AGC -> Even though the 5 Panzer corps are in excellent shape progress seems modest. Mogilev is taken and a small pocket formed to the east of the city. 2 Panzer divisions of the 56th Panzer make it to the East side of Dnepr. The 20th motorized goes forward to displace some air bases then pulls back to help supply. The 3 Panzer corps of the 2nd Panzer army form up to the south of Mogilev. The 24th Panzer corps also puts one panzer division on the east bank of the Dnepr as well. Lothar Rendulic takes command of the 47th Panzer corps. This is a +1 to initative and +2 the admin. The supply lines are the longest to this area so I expect to have limitd mps for the 5 panzer corps next turn. They most likely do little next turn. The positive thing is that they are through the most difficult terrain in the area against very limited resistance. I consider the early campaign goal for AGC to be complete. I just have to wait on supplies to see what can be done next.

AGS -> 3 small and 1 medium sized pockets are formed. Some reorganization is done to allow for best supply possible. The Lehr Mot regiment sent South and added to the 3rd Panzer corps.

Russian losses to date 6.6k planes, 6.5k tanks, 9.9k guns. Killed/captured 585k. 57 division destroyed or shattered. Several other regiment/Brigade sized units plus forts also destroyed. Oh yeah and Russian truck losses so far at 35k

Turn 3 will tell the tail for the AGN/AGC sections of the front.

Turn 3 start

AGN -> fuel levels are low but mp's are in the 30-40 range for most Pnz and Mot divs. The expectations are to make a good leap in this area.

AGC-> Fuel level and mps are mostly low. The supply range is killing me here. I just have to wait on the rail lines to catch up. I can only inch forward here a bit but the infantry will be catching up soon.

AGS-> All mobile units are in good shape with good fuel levels. The decision here will be how hard and far I will push. Do I spring ahead now to kill some factories or wait for infantry and supply lines. The choices for AGN and AGC are fairly simple but here is were I must ponder what is best.

turn 3 progress 7-3-41

It seems many Russian air bases are withing bumping range of my ground units and I will do so. I see no reason to pass up killing planes for free. Vitebsk and Smolensk are empty. I have no reason not to move into them. I consider cities with railyards to be important and both cities will need to be taken sooner or later anyway. I should add that Novgorod is empty of Russian units as well and can be taken. I can see no reason not to go ahead take it. Many more Russian will begin to show up during the Russian phase of turn 3. The first 3 turns for the Germans are the ones were they need to make the most of it. I see heavy concentrations of Russian around Leningrad in particular and on the east side of the Volkhov river. Isolating Leningrad is the first goal then I'll worry about the rest.

Turn 3 finish 7-3-41

AGN-> I bumped most of the Russian air bases in the area. I broke though in the Narva area. I ended up in a line from north of the Luga river to Novgorod. I'm a about 3 or 4 hexes from clipping the rail line into Leningrad.

AGC-> Mobile units are low on fuel and mps I can only do so much. The infantry is still on the way. I take Vitebsk and Smolensk for free. I displace air bases NE of Vitebsk and near Gomel. I formed a small pocket west of Mogilev.

AGS-> I took Kiev, Vinnitsa, Proskurov, Cherniovtsy, Nikolaev and Krovograd and cut off Odessa. I formed pockets around Ladyzhin, Zhitomir and Shepetovka.

Russian losses

7.7k planes, 14k guns, 8.6k tanks. 54k men kia, 810k capture, 224k disabled. 51k trucks

Axis 19k kia/captured 42k disabled and 6.3k trucks

So I finally got my act together and can provide some screen shots. I've added plenty of heavy artillery and engneers to AGN, 16th and 18th armies. The lines are cut and I think 8 armaments factories slipped out but the KV factory and the rest are still there [8D]

The southern portion of AGC. Bryansk is the main target for AGC atm. Supplies are low for the mobile units and the supplies lines are very long atm.

The southern part of AGS. D-town and Z-town are the current objectives atm. Only one Rumanian divisions remains with the 11th armie. Only the 17th armie is overloaded atm with an extra 2 divisions. No corps anywhere are overloaded. I image that I will need loads of AP's to get the Rumanian armies out of AGS.

Turn 4, very good. Practice moving up the shore of Lake Ladoga all the to the Finnish border. Only after you capture the ports will Leningrad be isolated and out of supply.

Update on the Leningrad area. I'm beginning to get a feel for support units. The fighting is very difficult. I need more support units for this area. HQ build up at this point would be useless as even if I had the mps I can't go far now. The 18th armie is in contact now at the front and the 16th armie is en route as well. The 14th motorized division sits on the rail line. Honestly I don't see how the Russians ever loose this city it looks like its going be very hard to get.

It gets easier with practice. The more you play, the more conceptual you get in your thinking and operationally you will get better. Once you get the Germans down pretty good, play some Soviet Union. It is so alien compared to Germany and really gives good insight on the capabilities and limitations of the Russian Juggernaut.

AGC area. The factories in the Byransk area was moved but not closer to the front [&:]
I'll have the 2nd armie move to link up with AGS as time goes on. Panzers low on gas. So chip chip chip away untilk supplies and infantry catch up. I want to keep the pressure on. I don't want them to dig in.

The southern section of AGS. Odessa falls. D town is ZOCed [:)] I imagine Z town is a loss but I had no way to get a unit adjacent. I would like to cut the rail line to the Crimea to trap the factories down there then drive for Kharkov, Stalino and Friends. I added the motorized division reinforcement to the 1st Panzer. I have all the mobile units and Cav units in the area.

Turn 6 start

The factories in Z-town and Poltava were move out. [:(]

So far to date

20 armaments and 20 Heavy industry destroyed.

Trapped 23 armaments and 13 Heavy industry. 20 BA-10 armored car, 4 Yak-6, 6 vehicle, 7 T-50 m1941 and the 32 KV-1 M1941.

So if I capture D-town and Leningrad then I have a total of 43 armaments and 33 Heavy industry total. Kharkov and Stalino are the next most important targets in the South. Tula and Moscow are the targets in the Center and Kaluga as well since its along the way.

worst case if I get nothing else how good is taking 43 armaments. I'm guesing I need more.
