RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by inqistor »

Since Allies sends mostly unescorted LCxs, using only DDs should be anough (actually even MGBs should be enough), so I do not see, why you need Cruisers for your hunting groups. Also submarines with lots of gun ammo can be useful. I do not see any serious escorts for those ships.
I have counted in both large stacks equivalent of 13 Divisions. You are both pretty close on-land. The main difference is that Allies have to send short-legged airgroups around the globe, and you can transfer them by internal lines. Break their airgroups morale, and you will win.
This is really last chance to defeat Allies on land. Another possibility will be on Java, or Philippines, but then I doubt you will be able to land any larger reinforcements.

Morning Air attack on 9th Indian Division, at 58,45 , near Mandalay
Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 5 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 1 minutes

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 13 damaged

Allied ground losses:
81 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Your bombers seems to reach almost 1 squad hit per bomber used. Maybe your chances in clear terrain are slim, but theirs are no better. Allies have more AA power, and their bombers carry more bombs, but your supply lines are shorter, and you have bases nearby, so can use local CAP. It seems that both sides are similarly scr****, but Japan can rebuild quicker. And later firepower ratio will be even worse.
Sweep, and LRCAP those units, and then send 100s bombers every day. In a week, they will have no supply, and no combat power. Their airgroups morale will be broken, then close to counterattack, and rout them.
- Annoying: why the heck attack with bombs when orders is torpedoes and there are 99 torps in base Air HQ???

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Ramree Island at 53,47

Yeah, just noticed that the Frances unit somehow had reverted to normal range settings which caused it to attack shipping at Ramree Island one hex into extended range, grrr! :p)

Allied destroyers of 44-45 are superior to Jap destroyers and they have vastly more of them. I've only been sending in "old expendables" and don't want to loose too many fleet destroyers.
To counter Allied CLs and CAs I had to send in a few heavy ships and also decided to send a few old light cruisers as destroyer leaders.

80% of the subs I've sent into the area have been sunk or heavily damaged, ac and smaller vessels carry enough ASW capabilities to decisively outweigh the advantages of sending more boats.
There are hundreds of Allied fighters at Akyab so tried to send in a bombardment force but a sub attacking an escort revealed the composition of the entire battle group today [:@]

No way to break Allied air power in the region and as you can see below Allied meds and heavies pound our LCUs in our fortified clear hex bases so badly that it's virtuall impossible to
defend the basin anymore. In order to retain our combat strength it will soon become necessary to abandon the basin. The Amb brigade at Ramree is being shattered and we're now air lifting
as many squads as possible out.

I have deleted many of our airstrikes that does no damage to enemy LCUs - so while I may break the smaller ones I'm far from sure we can seriously hurt a major stack.

Yes, the ability of big 4E strikes to raise the disruption of any japanese unit to 90+ in clear terrain is most annoying.

And I am afraid it is only going to get worse. Once the Superforts start flying ground attack missions even bad terrain won't save you. [:(]

I am most of the way through reading Antony Beevor's D-Day, which covers the entire Normandy campaign including the breakout and dash across France. Apparently the ability of massed 4EB strikes to do just that was quite real! [X(]

+1 here Rainer79. [:(]
& I just can't believe the 4Es were IRL used to carpet bombing the units that were clashed in close combat fighting with each other.
If I were again to negotiate the house rules of my PBEM I'd suggest "no use of strategic bombers on ground attack mission" at least if the enemy LCU is in the same hex as an Allied one... [8|]

My two cents here. Ark and I have a great close game going. However, as Ark's opponent I would respectfully never agree to this house rule. One reason is that a hex is 50 miles across and the Japanese player might have 100,000 or more troops in that hex. As with any force, the majority of these troops are not eyeball to eyeball with the enemy and if in open terrain such as in Burma or especially OZ would be very vulnerable to this type of bombing. Second reason is the constant short supply of Allied medium bombers combined with the almost worthlessness of Allied fighters in this role. (a very important role for them) would in effect place a severe handicap on the Allied player. Ark has seen my pools and can tell you that even in Jan of 44, I have virtually no types of medium bombers. (I am willing to bet in our game through 24 months of combat that the ratio of Japanese medium bomber sorties to Allied is running at about a 10-1 rate) and his medium bombers pools seem to be very healthy. (scen #2)

Third it can be argued that with the level of training, doctrine, advanced ground control and radio communication that the Allied were far better suited to close ground support with "any" type of platform than the Japanese. Why not a HR limiting allowing no close air support from any Japanese plane except single engine? My troops have been eating Japanese bombs for a long time now.

Lets get real here. 4E or not, any Japanese unit moving in open terrain after mid 1943, anywhere where there is Allied air, should just get pounded to dust. I see absolutely nothing unreal or incorrect about this. I realize that this is a JFB nightmare but after all, you choose to play them.[:D]

RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by PzB74 »

Well, we don't have such a house rule - just an greement not to overdo things.
My main issue is that LCUs camped in a major bases with 5-6 forts should be more or less safe from air interdiction in a 50 mile hex...
They're not, neither is their supplies!

Jap ground support isn't worth much...as this turn shows.

As our bombardment TF was spotted yesterday I ordered the big ships to turn back.
I counted on that Andy would evacuate his ac from Akyab and send most of his destroyers there.
- That was correct, hardly any ac reported there today.

Instead I sent a strong destroyer force to Ramree Island and they sank 4 destroyer escorts and 4 PT boats.
The old Minekaze class Urukaze took a hit and sank.

Today's destroyer sweep was used to cover our large minesweeper and 125 mines were laid.

I think it is dependent on the amount of CAP over the target. One squadron will just turn transports back and kill one or two on occasion--and it looks to me as if some of the transports will complete the mission as well. They have worked it out fairly nice. However, he must have had a large CAP over that hex to shoot down all of those Emilys. That is the only time it has worked for me. Why don't you ask him if that was the case. I would be interested in knowing.

The old Minekaze class Urukaze took a hit and sank.
Since you are hunting mainly LCxs, and PTs, I was wondering about use of PGs. I do not see any use for them, especially those without ASW weapons. DDs are not armored, so they should have chance even with them, and you do not need any torpedoes, because most ships are too small, so guns should suffice.
PGs are slow, however if you put on them heavy LRCAP, you will at least slaughter enemy anti-ship planes, for small price of few PGs
100+ bombers and ca 50 Allied ground casualties from an armored brigade in an open hex...
Not great! 23 B-25s caused 173 Jap casualties in a single attack. Just can't compete.

Allied ground losses:
31 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Vehicles lost 22 (4 destroyed, 18 disabled)
I have no idea, how it is calculated, but 2 Support Squads have 2*15 men amongst them, so somehow rest of damage equals ONE man...
16 squads, and 22 vehicles is quite good result. I do not think there can be "somehow disabled", or "completely disabled" squad. Disabled is disabled, and without full supply they should not recover.

Now, if you look closer, your attacks at 9k have better results, that those at lower altitude, that is because you are coming too low, and fly exactly into those gazillion twin-Vickers. This could be good for larger supply usage, but not good for your planes. I have checked database, and those twin AAMGs have few upgrades, but all have ceiling at 2100. So your LOWEST attack altitude should be 3000.
Also, if you want to go higher, and there is enemy AA unit in hex, you should go at 10k, because 40mm Bofors have 9800 ceiling.
When I CAP Ramree Island with enemy transports flying in I get 7-8 messages about intercepts and maybe 1 kill.
When 18 Emily's flew in to pick up Ambh Bde troops today 11!!

Allied transports are very sturdy. MAVISes are not only slow, but I am not sure, that they are even armed. And Allied fighters are always heavily armed.
Try to LRCAP with NICKs.

Also, where are your fighters? I do not see you intercept those Allied attacks. Every lost bomber will lower morale, when they reach point, when they begin retreating after just seeing your fighters, there will be time to counterattack.

SnagIt somehow didn't work this turn so no screens....

Our transport commander is rated as "rated careful" and the Mavis transport has no armor but a durability of 44.
This turn a crack George unit with 45 fighters was sent to sweep Ramree Island; it claimed 25 Warhawks. Probably the same that had
a feast with our transports yesterday! In total 45 to 8 ac were lost today in Jap favor.

At the most I've had 100+ fighters on CAP over Ramree Island, all types - results have always been minute versus transport ac.

For several reasons I'm now more careful with my fighters; this turn 400 Allied fighters swept the hex east of Ramree Island, no doubt
in preparation for a major Allied air bombardment - which didn't happen [:)] The ground assault thus failed miserably....and we can now
clearly see the Allied main effort on our flank.

Our fighters also need some R&R; numbers and morale must up and I don't want to disperse them too much as I need to defend the Rangoon area
against the Allied hordes of fighters and bombers. A huge convoy with 120k supplies is now unloading and it will take one of our depleted divisions
back to Bangkok. It's possible that this is the last major convoy to arrive at Rangoon - if the basin is lost air superiority over Rangoon will most likely
also be lost.

Well, small slow warships are almost useless against enemy PT boats and destroyers - you saw what happened to Allied DE's last turn; demolished.
Ground casualties from interdiction is an iffy issue, now idea why the numbers are so strange. I have varied bombing altitude as much as possible to get the bombers
to attack uncoordinated, this seem to yield best results.

True, but divide the damaged squads among the attacking units and it becomes much more tolerable for Allies!
Still a bit concerned about the huge variances in AV and modified AV - Allied AV adjusted from 4000+ to ~125?
- Shouldn't be possible and I expressed my general concern to Andy as I find it very hard to understand ground combat.

Action packed turn!

Our 6 destroyers went back to Magwe and chaos erupted.
Numerous enemy minesweepers (as predicted) were there but so were 8 Allied destroyers.
One Allied destroyer was crippled by a mine and another sunk by a torpedo. In return we lost 2 destroyers and all but 1 were
rather shot up, so not a great return.

Our air strikes all concentrated on the agile destroyers, failing to score.
Our escorts did not manage to protect all our bombers and in total 20 were lost; time to cull their range as they can't hit fast
warships anyway.

PS! Notice that the Nells dropped both bombs and torpedoes today, lots of ordnance at Port Blair; this is why I immediately assumed
the Frances bombers also used wrong ordnance earlier on. Don't quite understand this.

A sub was also hammered by enemy destroyers, so not a great day over Ramree Island.

In the air heavy enemy sweeps and bomber formations hit Toungoo and Magwe; I had moved 80 Tojo's to Tongoo to provide some forward cover
for our troops in the basin. The average Tojo units took a beating but managed to hurt some escorts and bombers. But again, forward fighter
cover only risk meeting massed Allied force and it's not worth it. We need to concentrate our force now and launch counterstrikes now and then.

Enemy air power hit our 5th Guards division at Magwe hard; I expected this to happen and this is why the division is alone - our rearguard as
we're now leaving the clear hexed basin altogether. So the Army Air Force was ordered to attack Allied ground units at Magwe in force, quite dangerous
because of the idiot rule that doesn't allow us to sweep our own base hexes. Still, our bombers got through and I think this was decisive.
- A strong enemy attack by 3 Allied divisions was checked.

Burma

Our army west of Ramree Island will move south tomorrow while our regiments in the north already
have pulled back into the Lashio line. Our Jungle line should be fully manned within a few days and
engineers are building fortifications.

I expect to be forced to fall back in the north if attacked by strong enemy forces, but this will take time and
resources and will enable us to concentrate our army further south were it doesn't risk being cut of.

If Allied units move into clear hexes in force we will be able to
sweep and bomb at will but when Allied air power is established in 2-3 size 9 bases it will be time to pull our
air forces into Indo Chinia. Bangkok will take over Rangoon's role and fortunately I've already constructed numerous
built up air bases in the region.

RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by PzB74 »

Going on the annual boys trip; to England / London this year!
Bovington tank museum (a revisit to see the new wing)
Royal Air Tattoo at Fairford
Mercedes Benz World to have driving experience in AMG CSL 63

Will be so kewl [8D]
Told Andy to join us at Fairford, perhaps he'll show up!
So this is last post for this week; tomorrow night will be little beetle evening as usual (interpret that as you wish!)

Very heavy fighting in Burma!
Both sides air forces concentrate on LCUs in Magwe; we are hit hardest but since the Allies are attacking they're also exposed.
We manage to stave of another attack, Imp 5th division has now moved 36 miles west.

At Mandalay our rear guard, a regiment, was heavily assaulted. It was moving SE into the jungle instead of following the road east.
This delayed it and the enemy's shock attack routed it.

East of Ramree Island we have withdrawn 1 hex south and in the north Bhamo has been evacuated.
In a few days the army in the basin will move into Toung Gyu and complete our withdrawal into the jungle
- It was simply not possible to continue defending it against combined heavy Allied land and air attacks (especially the latter).

Have a great time over here in Blighty . Bovington is great , but not been there for years myself, really must get off my arse and re-visit the place. If your coming to London go visit HMS Belfast on the Thames. she's the last surviving British Heavy Cruiser from WW2. Annoyingly we don't keep old ships for museum pieces , the US has it right on that score but then again scrapping the Enterprise was a huge mistake imo. she would have been a great memorial for WW2 sailors and aviators.

Well done on the withdrawal from Burma's open-terrain centre , I confess I was rather worried you'd get slaughtered in the open there. Grats !

sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

I was wondering about Submarines in shallow water. As I understand current engine, shallow water simply reduces maximum depth for submarine, but Japan have lots of submarine types, and some ROs have really small Durability (which suppose to be directly proportional to max possible depth). Not even mentioning SSXs which should have no advantage in deeper ocean.
So, anyone know what is maximum depth in shallow hex?
ORIGINAL: PzB
Very heavy fighting in Burma!
Both sides air forces concentrate on LCUs in Magwe; we are hit hardest but since the Allies are attacking they're also exposed.
We manage to stave of another attack, Imp 5th division has now moved 36 miles west.
I think you should pay a visit to those LCU in clear, north of Prome. Now is the chance to rout them, before position will be reinforced. You will get pounding, but two lager units of one nationality routed, and Allies must spend 6 months on rebuilding.
At Mandalay our rear guard, a regiment, was heavily assaulted. It was moving SE into the jungle instead of following the road east.
This delayed it and the enemy's shock attack routed it.
If airfields are still open, it would be useful to put some TONY units on railroad bases, near Mandalay. Last surprise, before you abandon whole position.

P-47 on escort, and you do not hunt them? Think of the disadvantages they have in such role!

Also, I have seen P-40E in earlier report. P-40E is the same fighter, USA begins game in Philippiness. Does that mean, that they are actually short on modern airframes?

I have also checked those 40mm guns, on Tojo IIb, and they are only ONE point better, than 20mm, so not especially good.

Back from our annual boys trip!

Bovington was great Rob, they've opened a new wing and there's lot of new stuff there since I visited last time ca 8 years ago.
Had for example a new King Tiger there [:)]

Oh yes, I've visited the Belfast already during one of the first NAAFI trips.
Great ship and the story involving the sinking of the Scharnhorst is an epic.

The airshow at Fairford was also good even though it almost became a washout; only a spell of nice weather in the afternoon saved it and we saw
a Lancaster, Spit, Mustang and a Vulcan take to the air togehter with the Red Arrows and other modern ac.

The battle in Burma continues at full pace; we disengaged from Magwe and within a few days the basin will be completely evacuated.
So yes, getting out of the basin more or less in an organized fashion has been part of the plan for a long time.

I can easuly count 180 enemy LCUs in Burma now and 375 figthers swept Magwe before the bombers went in this turn.
800 Jap fighters have been deployed around Rangoon to counter the menace.

No idea Inq, guess a shallow hex is 50~ meters or so?
I can't move Jap units into the clear, they will be squashed by enemy air...
I did place 80 fighters to do CAP central basin hexes....50 were lost. Enemy air sweeps and CAP makes it to expensive to mount forward ops now.
Most enemy sweep missions have been edited out of the report, so when you see an escorted raid there has most likely been lots of sweeps going in first.

With no air unit withdrawals I guess Allies got more squadrons than modern ac to man them with - much like us.
I got 1000 fighters sitting in the Home Islands undergoing advanced training in A6M2s and similar.

Ca 200 Tojos left in the pools, slowly converting them to Franks.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 27, 44

Surface Combat

Allied destroyers attacked Rangoon for the first time; 4 of them engaged 6 of ours.
Has been a severe drop in efficiency lately, again we could hardly hit the enemy ships while on of ours was set on fire and later sank.
Another old destroyer that was lost, but 4 were modern.

I have called upon 12 PT boats to protect Rangoon!

Air Combat

We had 8 fighter units on escort at various altitudes; a single unit escorted our bombers and most stayed
home. It's so hard to coordinate that the best defense is to send in low morale bombers that abort if heavy resistance is encountered.
Enemy ground attack ac are horribly effective, whe 4Es are thrown in as well units are chewed up in no time.

Burma

What do you think, how should we deploy our divisions in Burma now?
Have to bottle up the left flank with 4000 enemy AV - this is their main force.
It will be possible for 3000 enemy AV to move both east and south from basin, but this should be easier to contain.
So I think our reserves should be positioned at or near Toungoo.

-> I don't think Andy can attack south out of the basin as long as we have a strong presence on his right flank.
So by keeping a sizeable force here we should be able to cause some headaches.

Lots of surface combat this turn!
At Rangoon more enemy destroyers attack and in another intense surface action both sides loose one each.
Only a lucky long lance torpedo hit evened things out cause Allied gunnery is much superior now.

Our convoy evacuating a routed division was engaged by the remaining Allied destroyers as it headed out of Rangoon, annoying that our 12 PT
boats didn't intervene. So we lost a transport and a PB but the escorting destroyer mostly saved the day as the troop load was dispersed among 2 convoys and numerous transports.

As a little payback we raided Pago Pago and sank a merchant and 2 minesweepers.
Enemy air recon was non-existent!

"Relatively" quiet in Burma basin; our rearguard units are moving out of Meiktila, when this move is completed a new phase of the Battle for Burma will begin in February and last until
the monsoon sets in mid May. Wonder how Andy manage inside the basin bases now, supply shortages are much more severe there than in the jungle - go figure [8|]

Burma Front

Another annoyance; our cff division is at full strength but is now allowed to break out through an empty hex to the SE because Allies own hex side without having troops there.
This is uber silly.... [:o]

The red lines indicate our various frontline and fallback positions in Burma.
Ideally Andy would like to attack Prome, but to do so he has to defeat our strong force in the jungle hex to the west or move through the open hex and cross a river to get there - not very ideal.
Will be interesting to see which direction he selects.

Possible, many of our ships did not become involved in combat until well into the battles.
But our ships also got radar by now, in general it seems like Allied destroyers of 44 vintage have become 2 notches more deadly than their 43 cousins.

This turn I ordered 300 fighters to CAP Meiktila; of course not a single enemy bomber attack this turn...some bombers went to the neighbouring hex
and got shot up by the Tojo's I placed there.

Our own bombers went in against an armored bde in the open just north of Prome; of course escorts stayed home so the leaky CAP got some of them.
Enemy troops now enter Meiktila in force.
