Game question.

Fans of the old Panzer General series rejoice for the release of Panzer Corps. Following in the footsteps of the popular SSI masterpiece and sharing with the General series the same level of engagement and strategic depth, Panzer Corps will keep an unmistakable "PG feeling" whilst improving and refining the gameplay and balance. Panzer Corps will feature 26 scenarios on 21 unique maps, covering most major battles of the European Theatre of World War II and including a few hypothetical 'what if' scenarios based on your actions. Now expanded with a full-war mega-campaign and the Afrika Corps and Allied Corps releases!

Game question.

Post by stormbringer3 »

I read the Quarter to Three article by Tom Chick about Panzer Corps which was very interesting. The game discussion evolved into is it more of a puzzle game or not? A statement was made that in Panzer General, because of the scenario time limits, there was really only one or two appoachs to win that would be successful. Is that opinion about Panzer General accurate and if so, will Panzer Corps place the same style scenario time constraints which would then lead to an similar situation?
Thanks for any opinions.

I often hear such opinions, but frankly, I never understood them. To me "puzzle" means that there is only one approach/strategy/army composition in every given scen which can be used to win it. But it never was like that in PG. Most players prefer to use mixed cores as they play, but there were experiments by fans where they played campaign with almost 100% bomber force, or with no planes all, or only with infantry etc. Many many such experiments were made over the years. I seriously don't get it how a game can be a puzzle when it allows so different ways to victory.

That's also my understanding. What happens is that we personally usually end up favoring one approach from the other.
Now if you ask me if in a multiplayer game there will be more solutions (and also other problems), I will say, yes. Mainly because the players can play in a multitude of different ways that's not possible, yet, to code in a AI.

panzer general was great there were so many ways to play i ussualy had a strong panzer force with a few infantry, a few fighters and tac bombers, and a few artillery

the thing i didnt like about panzer general is if you focused on getting your units the maximum experience possible by about the 10th battle you could have tac bombers up to and over 5 stars of experience that would insta nuke any unit on the field even aa guns and they couldn't even fire back, and tanks with over 5 experience that would insta nuke any enemy in open terrain, the experience part of it seemed really really gimmicky and rewarded choosing the africa campaign for all the extra experience you would get and turn your armies into unstoppable rolling death force

i sure hope you toned down the effects of experience on the units

We did pay attention to this problem. Some steps we took are:
- Experience bonuses to unit ratings are more mild.
- Experience of the units grows more slowly
- Over-strength of elite units is possible but 2 times more expensive

I have no idea what you just said, but you're one blinking wacko. I mean that in the best possible sense of the word, "blinking."
