DP Guns and AAA weapons in the editor

Post by Shark7 »

Since I didn't really want to hijack the ASW thread by taking it off tangent with this, I thought it best to create it's own thread.

JWE and friends have done some changes to the ASW routine that have started me thinking. I have to wonder if the AAA type weapons work on the same premise as the ASW weapons.

In Stock, the ASW weapons were banked together meaning it was an 'all or nothing' approach to an ASW attack (as I understand it). In the end, this led to the late war 'Super E' due to all of the ordnance being used in attack or (one can assume) the exact opposite a chance of no attack at all.

The AAA type weapons are often found in large banks on the ships. IE you have 30 x 2 LS AAA and 30 x 2 RS AAA. Now not knowing how the inner workings work, I'm wondering if you also get this all or nothing approach to AAA firing and I also wonder if breaking it up into 'banks' would have any effect on results. IE instead of 30 x 2 LS we have 3 banks of 10 x 2 LS, etc.

Am I onto something, or just completely off base from not understanding how the AAA code works?

I don't know the answer (although a small amount of testing should give us the answer.)

But, if your theory is correct, you have found a great way to model excellent fire control and bad fire control. Link them together to represent good fire control. separate them to represent bad fire control. The only limit is that you can only have 20 weapon slots on ships. :(

The older I get, the better I was.

Great Idea ! Hope it works this way we could model Japanese and Allied FC especially the american FC/5-38.1 problem I forsee the data inputing would be a nightmare.

One of the AA issues that the game may not address is HA fire control. DDs typically had one position, cruisers, two, and battleships four. That meant long range fire could handle that number of targets.

Off base, Sharky. AAA is totally different from ASW. Can't take thoughts from one and make assumptions for the other. Sorry.

Precisely why I asked, I had no way to know if it would or not.

You also have arcs to deal with. Just because a mount is situated on the left side does not mean that it has an arc that will allow it to fire at a target approaching from port stern etc.

I was wondering the same thing.
AA Rockets are defined as ONE large integrated construction. Can it actually target several aircrafts, or whole 72 Rocket launch goes against ONE plane?
Considering technical scheme, it looks, that they should be actually divided on 5 per "turret".

That would work for ships, but I do not think ONE plane is dangerous enough to use all weapons against it. To simulate better AA control, it would be probably better to SPLIT AA guns, so they could target more planes.

Well, if whole "slot" can target only ONE plane, you can make maximum number of weapon slots, on one side of a ship, equal to maximum possible number of trackable targets.
