Horrible Download Rate

Post by Johnus »

I'm used to downloading Matrix purchases in a few minutes. Panzer Corp is downloading at about 25-30 KB per second. Estimated time about 4-5 hours. What is this?

Can I cancel and try to start over? Will that help? I don't have the patience for this. Cancelling and starting over doesn't help. This really sucks. After over a half hour, I am about 3% done.

Hi Johnnie,

It's not the store servers, which have plenty of extra bandwidth right now. It must be something between our store and your computer on the internet, or something to do with your ISP.

Rebooting your router and computer and trying again may get you a different route.

Regards,

Erik:

Thanks. Your suggestion worked like a charm. The download then took all of 5 minutes.

I am having the same problem, and rebooting made no difference.

Why am I downloading from some primus site instead of Matrix? Is this a third party provider that saves Matrix a pile of cash at the cost of terrible service?

My download rates elsewhere are their normal half meg or better.

Just tried a download test speed site, and got 18Mbps. Right now my download from "matrix" which isn't matrix at all is a whopping 30BK/s.

Oops, check that, now it is down to 18KB/s.

Sorry you are having problems. Matrix has never provided a download link - it has always come from a download service like Plimus. To be honest this is the way the vast majority of software is delivered - even people like Microsoft use a similar service. Slow downloads can occur if the link between you and the server is slow. Stopping and starting again usually fixes the issue as another route it taken. The servers have plenty of bandwidth so the issue is unfortunately somewhere in the chain of connections between you and the server.

Yes, I am aware this is the way software is typically downloaded. First time I have ever had anything like a problem like this. I suppose it could be my problem which is unique to my connection only to this Plimus place, and every other connection to everything else is working perfectly fine.

Just tried another download site in Seattle, WA (I am in NY) and got 9MB/sec.

Well, I've restarted the download about 8 times now, restarted my PC, rebooted my router.

Still shows about 12 hours to download a 428MB file.

Is this hosted anywhere other than Primus?

Woohoo! Sped way up! Now it should only be 3 more hours!

This is really pretty ridiculous. A 300MB file is too much for this service to handle effectively? Really?

Glad it is now working better, but it really isn't likely to be a server issue. As you say its not a big file and there are very powerful and distributed servers hosting the file. The problem is there are many connections between you and the target file. If the connection closest to you was having trouble it couldbe that when you restarted the new route still went through the same initial connection which was slow. Unfortunately its almost impossible to track down or solve as each connection is someone elses resonsibility and issues fluctuate with local demand.
